Effect of recruitment maneuver strategy on early postoperative atelectasis among intermediate- to high-risk patients undergoing abdominal surgery: A multicenter, 2 × 2 factorial, randomized clinical trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Recruitment maneuver is pivotal for reducing the development of atelectasis but the optimal strategy is far from being established. This study hypothesized that the recruitment maneuver under ultrasound guidance compared with conventional technique, and that stepwise lung inflation compared with sustained inflation would reduce early postoperative atelectasis among intermediate- to high-risk patients undergoing abdominal surgery. DESIGN: A multicenter, 2 × 2 factorial, randomized clinical trial. SETTING: Six tertiary hospitals in China. PATIENTS: Adult patients who had an i

Effects of triticale silage substitution for corn silage on growth performance, serum biomarkers, rumen fermentation, and rumen bacterial community of Pingliang Red Cattle.

BACKGROUND: In the Loess Plateau region, corn silage production is constrained by water scarcity and rising costs. Triticale silage offers a promising alternative, yet its impact on the performance, metabolism, and rumen microbiota of Pingliang Red Cattle (PRC) remains poorly understood. This study therefore evaluated the effects of substituting corn silage with triticale silage on growth performance, pancreatic enzyme activity, serum biochemistry, rumen fermentation, and the rumen microbial community in PRC, and applied the TOPSIS method to determine the optimal substitution ratio. METHODS:

Trends and diagnostic challenges in pediatric schizophrenia spectrum disorders in Poland (2014-2019): A nationwide register-based study in an international context.

OBJECTIVES: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) in children and adolescents are rare but clinically severe conditions. In Poland, evidence regarding diagnostic practices and system-level determinants of pediatric SSD diagnoses remains limited. This study aimed to analyze nationwide trends in first-time inpatient diagnoses of SSDs in youth between 2014 and 2019, with a focus on age distribution, diagnostic coding patterns (F20, F21, F25), and selected indicators of service utilization and reimbursement. METHODS: A retrospective register-based analysis was conducted using national inpatient

Art-based beauty appreciation intervention in young adults: protocol for a two-arm active control mixed-method randomised controlled trial (ABBA-Vention).

BACKGROUND: Young adults are experiencing rising levels of mental health concerns and low well-being, which is exacerbated for around 20% of the population who are high in sensory processing sensitivity (SPS), a distinguishable, partly heritable trait associated with poorer mental health. However, despite this worrying increase in mental health issues among young adults, individuals who score highly on beauty appreciation tend to enjoy better well-being and improved mental and physical health. Several studies have shown that beauty appreciation can be taught and may serve as a cost-effective a

High-Accuracy Performance of a Simplified Binary Triage System in Military Trauma.

IMPORTANCE: Accurate prehospital triage is critical for prioritizing evacuation and allocating medical resources in combat settings characterized by diagnostic uncertainty and operational constraints. Simplified, judgment-based triage systems may improve feasibility and adherence but require validation under real-world conditions. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a simplified binary field triage system in identifying severely injured trauma casualties under real-world combat conditions. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted between October 27, 2023, and

Structural barriers drive the intention-action gap in hepatitis B prevention among migrants in Shandong Province, China: a triangulated study of serological, spatial, and behavioral data.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health challenge in China. Migrant workers constitute a highly vulnerable population due to high geographic mobility and occupational vulnerability. Despite public health education efforts, a notable intention-action gap disrupts the HBV care cascade. This study integrates serological, spatial, and behavioral data to investigate whether this gap is primarily driven by cognitive deficits or interrupted by underlying structural barriers. METHODS: A triangulated cross-sectional study was conducted in Yantai, China, involving st

Effects of a community-based structured group exercise program on cognitive and physical function among older adults with dementia: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a neurocognitive disorder that involves deterioration in cognitive and daily functioning, leading to loss of independence and reduced quality of life. While pharmacological treatments offer limited symptomatic relief, non-pharmacological approaches such as exercise have shown promise in improving cognitive and functional outcomes. However, evidence from community-based structured exercise interventions remains limited, particularly in low-resource settings. This trial aims to evaluate the effects of a community-based structured group exercise program on cognitive and ph

Anthelmintic resistance on meat goat properties in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, with a comparison of statistical methods.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection has serious deleterious effects on the health of goats, and costs Australian producers $2.5 million annually (Lane et al., 2015). Anthelmintic drugs are heavily relied upon for control of these parasites; however, anthelmintic resistance (AR) has become a major constraint for producers. This study assessed resistance to a range of registered and off-label anthelmintic treatments using faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) and compared four methods of FECRT analysis. Twelve meat goat properties in southern Queensland (n = 6) and New South Wales (n =

Comparison of Clinical Outcomes According to Preoperative Skin Preparation in Hip Arthroplasty for Hip Fracture: A 3-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hip fractures undergoing arthroplasty are typically old and frail, and superficial surgical site infections (SSIs) can delay mobilization and prolong hospitalization. Preoperative skin antisepsis is a low-cost, universally used intervention. However, clinical practice varies, and evidence from elective arthroplasty may not fully generalize to urgent hip fracture surgery. Sequential dual-antiseptic protocols combining povidone-iodine (PVI) and chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) are increasingly adopted; however, the optimal order for "scrub" versus "paint" remains unclear.

Identification of High-Risk Population for Mortality and Severe Clinical Outcomes Among Patients With Myasthenia Gravis: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare chronic neurological condition characterized by skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue. Some patients with MG have poorly controlled symptoms with conventional treatments. While new treatments could be considered in patients with poorly controlled MG, their costs are considerably higher and may impose a financial burden on patients and the national health insurance system. Therefore, we sought to identify high-risk populations for mortality and severe clinical outcomes among MG patients to effectively allocate health resources. METHODS: A population-

Perioperative Analgesic Effect of Serratus Anterior Plane Block for Breast Surgery: A Randomized Control Study at a Large Teaching Hospital in Ghana.

Background Pain after breast surgery has been described as moderate to severe in intensity and, if inadequately treated, increases postoperative morbidity, hospital cost, and the incidence of persistent postoperative pain. Serratus anterior plane (SAP) block is an interfascial injection technique for analgesia of the chest wall. There is a lack of data with regard to its analgesic and possible opioid-sparing effects in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to determine the perioperative analgesic effect of serratus anterior plane block administered for breast surgery. Methods This was a prospec

Utilizing shared frailty with the Cox proportional hazards regression: Post discharge survival analysis of CHF patients.

Understanding patients' survival probability as well as the factors affecting it constitute a significant concern for researchers and practitioners, in particular for patients with severe chronic illnesses such as congestive heart failure (CHF). CHF is a clinical syndrome characterized by comorbidities and adverse medical events. Risk stratification to identify patients most likely to die shortly after hospital discharge can improve the quality of care by better allocating organizational resources and personalized interventions. Probability assessment improves clinical decision-making, contrib
