Infant emotional withdrawal: a precursor of affective and cognitive disturbance in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to test the hypothesis that emotional withdrawal is an early indicator of affective disorder in infants heavily exposed prenatally to alcohol, which is independent of alcohol-related effects on mother-infant interaction and temperament and discriminated between children later diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and partial FAS (PFAS) and predicted cognitive and affective outcomes at 5 and 9 years. METHODS: The sample consisted of Cape Coloured (mixed ancestry) infants, whose mothers were interviewed during pregnancy regarding their alcohol consumption using a t

Exploring the Cervical Cancer Screening Experiences of Black Lesbian, Bisexual, and Queer Women: The Role of Patient-Provider Communication.

Few studies have focused on the health and health care of U.S. black lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women. To understand the facilitators of and barriers to cervical cancer screening in this population, focus group discussions were conducted in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts between November and December 2012. Using purposive sampling methods, the authors enrolled 18 black LBQ women who participated in one of four focus groups. Using thematic analysis, patient-provider communication was identified, which consisted of four sub-themes--health care provider communication style and demean

Palliative care needs of adults severely affected by sickle cell disease: A mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is one of the most common inherited monogenetic blood disorders. People living with sickle cell disease experience both acute pain and long-lasting complications, leading to co-morbidities which impact their quality of life. Palliative care is both under-reported and under-utilised for people living with sickle cell disease despite the profound impacts of this illness across their lives. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise published primary evidence on the palliative care needs and experiences of adults severely affected by sickle cell disease. DESIGN: Mixed method syste

Predicting personalized cumulative live birth rate after a complete in vitro fertilization cycle: an analysis of 32,306 treatment cycles in China.

BACKGROUND: The cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) has been regarded as a key measure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) success after a complete treatment cycle. Women undergoing IVF face great psychological pressure and financial burden. A predictive model to estimate CLBR is needed in clinical practice for patient counselling and shaping expectations. METHODS: This retrospective study included 32,306 complete cycles derived from 29,023 couples undergoing IVF treatment from 2014 to 2020 at a university-affiliated fertility center in China. Three predictive models of CLBR were developed based on

Addressing mental health challenges in clinical practice: a qualitative study to investigate perspectives of international mental health experts.

INTRODUCTION: Mental illnesses are not only associated with the highest level of subjective suffering compared to other chronic diseases but at the same time with a significantly increased morbidity. Especially in industrialized countries, a dramatically increasing proportion of sick leave and early retirement due to mental illness diagnoses is observed, pointing to increased social stress factors and a close association with societal changes and emphasizing challenges to the health care system. The following qualitative study was conducted as part of the establishment of the German Center for

Analysis of Psychiatric Symptoms and Suicide Risk Among Younger Adults in China by Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation.

IMPORTANCE: Younger adults in China who are transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) and lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) experience high levels of minority stress (eg, stigma and bullying) and adverse mental health symptoms. However, there is a lack of research documenting mental health disparities compared with their cisgender and heterosexual peers. Studies that disaggregate TGNC and LGB individuals and are conducted in nonmetropolitan regions are also needed. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether younger adult students' psychiatric symptoms and suicide risk vary by sexual orientation and gend

'I should not feed such a weak woman'. Intimate partner violence among women living with podoconiosis: A qualitative study in northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a serious, preventable public health problem that affects millions of people worldwide. Research indicates that adults suffering from long term, disabling conditions are more likely to be victims of IPV due to the intersection of disease-associated stigma and discrimination. IPV in turn is known to worsen the overall health and wellbeing of those affected by it. Little research however explores the relationship between neglected tropical diseases such as podoconiosis and IPV. This study explores the relationship between IPV and podoconiosis in nor

An EEG-based fatigue detection framework integrating interpretable feature selection and efficient temporal modeling.

INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is a critical factor contributing to operational errors, traffic accidents, and psychological disorders. A major challenge in current fatigue detection lies in the difficulty of clearly identifying fatigue-related neural channels in the brain, which hinders the accurate extraction of effective features from high-dimensional electroencephalography (EEG) signals. METHODS: This study proposes the AXELLSTM fatigue detection framework, an EEG-based cross-subject fatigue detection framework that integrates interpretable feature selection with efficient temporal modeling. Risk-Stratified Predictive Analysis of Docking Site Outcomes in Lower Extremity Bone Transport: Identifying High-Risk and Low-Risk Zones for Large Segmental Defect Management.

Background: Reconstruction of limbs with extensive bone loss often requires complex surgical procedures, which can be technically demanding, time-consuming, and physically and psychologically burdensome for patients. Historically, the lack of alternatives for large bone defects often led to primary amputation. Modern musculoskeletal practice allows for reconstruction using autologous or allogeneic bone grafts, or through more complex procedures such as the Masquelet technique or distraction osteogenesis. However, these methods share a common challenge: the need for a docking site procedure in

Prediction model for intrapartum labor analgesia efficacy based on preoperative multidimensional indicators.

BACKGROUND: Effective labor analgesia is paramount for maternal well-being and positive birth experiences. However, the efficacy of intrapartum labor analgesia exhibits considerable inter-individual variability. Identifying reliable preoperative predictors for labor analgesia efficacy is crucial for optimizing pain management strategies and enhancing patient outcomes. This study aimed to develop and validate a prediction model for intrapartum labor analgesia efficacy utilizing preoperative multidimensional indicators. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled 137 parturients who received lab

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the school refusal assessment scale-revised in a clinical sample of adolescents and their caregivers with depressive disorders.

School refusal behavior (SRB) is a prevalent and functionally heterogeneous problem among children and adolescents that can lead to serious academic, social, and psychological consequences. The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) is the most widely used instrument for identifying the functional motivations underlying school refusal, yet its psychometric properties have not been examined in Chinese clinical populations. The present study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the SRAS-R into Chinese and to evaluate its psychometric properties in a clinical sample of adolescents wi

Validation of the Rage Attack Questionnaire-Revised (RAQ-R) in a Mixed Psychiatric Population.

Rage Attacks (RA) represent a clinically relevant symptom in patients with different psychiatric disorders. However, only recently the Rage Attack Questionnaire Revised (RAQ-R, 22 items, range, 0-66) has been developed as a new instrument for the assessment of RA. This study aimed to validate the RAQ-R in a large mixed psychiatric and psychosomatic sample. We tested internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity as well as factor structure. In order to further explore the relationship of RA to other psychiatric symptoms, we calculated Pearson correlations between the RAQ-R and seve

Prediction of atopic dermatitis in 2-yr-old children by cord blood IgE, genetic polymorphisms in cytokine genes, and maternal mentality during pregnancy.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common skin disease in childhood and the first step of atopic march. This study aimed to investigate whether AD in children could be better predicted by biologic markers (cord blood IgE [cbIgE], LT-αNcoI alleles, and FcεRI-β E237G genotypes) and maternal mentality during pregnancy, taking into account gender, socio-demographic factors, and parental atopy. From 2001 to 2005, 1264 mother-infant pairs were recruited to participate in a birth cohort study. Prenatal questionnaire was used to collect family history, maternal gestational conditions and mentality, an
