An ROI-Guided Imaging Informatics Framework for Image-Language Differentiation of Tuberculous and Pyogenic Spondylitis on MRI.

This study aims to develop and validate an MRI-based image-language collaborative framework for differentiating tuberculous spondylitis (TB) from pyogenic spondylitis (PS) at the patient level. This retrospective two-center study included 347 patients with microbiologically or histopathologically confirmed spinal infection (218 TB, 129 PS) who underwent sagittal T2 weighted MRI between June 2021 and June 2025. An enhanced YOLO model was used to localize infection-related regions of interest (ROIs), which were subsequently reviewed by radiologists and used as semi-automated standardized inputs.

Digital health and artificial intelligence in paediatric respiratory medicine: what clinicians need to know and what is coming next.

Digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly part of paediatric respiratory clinics, from home-based symptom monitoring and remote consultations to AI-supported test interpretation and large language model (LLM)-supported communication. These tools promise to capture real-world disease and treatment patterns, support self-management, and enhance clinical decisions. Yet for most of these tools, the paediatric evidence base remains limited and fragmented, and the clinical benefit observed in practice is often modest. What has emerged is that effectiveness depends less on the

A vignette-based evaluation of ChatGPT's ability to provide appropriate and equitable medical advice across care contexts.

ChatGPT is a large language model trained on text corpora and reinforced with human supervision. Because ChatGPT can provide human-like responses to complex questions, it could become an easily accessible source of medical advice for patients. However, its ability to answer medical questions appropriately and equitably remains unknown. We presented ChatGPT with 96 advice-seeking vignettes that varied across clinical contexts, medical histories, and social characteristics. We analyzed responses for clinical appropriateness by concordance with guidelines, recommendation type, and consideration o

C9orf72, age at onset, and ancestry help discriminate behavioral from language variants in FTLD cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize C9orf72 expansions in relation to genetic ancestry and age at onset (AAO) and to use these measures to discriminate the behavioral from the language variant syndrome in a large pan-European cohort of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) cases. METHODS: We evaluated expansions frequency in the entire cohort (n = 1,396; behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia [bvFTD] [n = 800], primary progressive aphasia [PPA] [n = 495], and FTLD-motor neuron disease [MND] [n = 101]). We then focused on the bvFTD and PPA cases and tested for association between expan

STDN-GEN: rapid synthesis of layered critical-material dependency networks for supply-chain sustainability analysis.

Assessing a critical-material supply chain first requires a map: which components make up a technology, which materials those components need, and which countries produce those materials. Building such maps is slow, manual work, which limits how many technologies an analyst can screen. We introduce STDN-GEN, a system in which several large-language-model agents draft these maps and reconcile their proposals against a curated vocabulary of component and material names. The output is an auditable four-level network from technology to component to material to producing country, built in minutes r

Squidly harnesses enzyme functional hierarchy and contrastive learning to efficiently predict catalytic residues from sequence.

Enzymes present a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical industries, drug synthesis, and bioremediation applications. Because catalytic residues are the key amino acids that drive enzyme function, their accurate prediction facilitates enzyme function prediction. Sequence similarity-based approaches such as BLAST are fast but require previously annotated homologues. Machine-learning (ML) approaches aim to overcome this limitation; however, current gold-standard ML-based methods require high-quality 3D structures limiting their application to large datasets. To address these challenges,

Uses of generative AI by non-clinician staff at an academic medical center.

Large language model (LLM) chat tools have the potential to transform healthcare workflows by improving efficiency and reducing administrative burdens. While prior research has predominantly focused on clinicians, non-clinician healthcare staff constitute the majority of the workforce, and their real-world chat tool use remains uncharacterized. This retrospective, cross-sectional study analyzed de-identified chat logs from a secure, HIPAA-compliant LLM chat tool deployed at an academic medical center over an 11-month period. Among 30,503 chat threads analyzed, 98% originated from non-clinician

Altered neural processing of evaluative feedback from presumed conscious AI.

Interacting with artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly prominent in everyday life. Modern AI can produce intelligent, witty, and even sarcastic responses, leading people to assume AI is conscious. This raises the question whether AI is perceived as conscious, and how people respond to such machines behaviorally and neurally. This preregistered electroencephalogram (EEG) study investigated the processing of social evaluative feedback from a human and two putative AI algorithms differing in attributed consciousness. Participants (N = 40) received feedback, supposedly sent by either anothe

Evaluating the capability of ChatGPT in predicting drug-drug interactions: Real-world evidence using hospitalized patient data.

Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) present a significant health burden, compounded by clinician time constraints and poor patient health literacy. We assessed the ability of ChatGPT (generative artificial intelligence-based large language model) to predict DDIs in a real-world setting. Demographics, diagnoses and prescribed medicines for 120 hospitalized patients were input through three standardized prompts to ChatGPT version 3.5 and compared against pharmacist DDI evaluation to estimate diagnostic accuracy. Area under receiver operating characteristic and inter-rater reliability (Cohen's and Flei

Salivary Gland Ultrasounds Can be Read by General Radiologists: A Review of 4 Years of Reports From an Urban Academic Radiology Department.

OBJECTIVES: Salivary gland ultrasound (SGUS) plays a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring glandular disease activity, including the risk of lymphomagenesis in Sjogren's disease (SjD). Despite the importance of SGUS, access is often limited as rheumatologists do not always have the resources to perform these exams. Radiology, which specializes in image acquisition and interpretation at volume, has the potential to improve access to SGUS for patients undergoing SjD workup. The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of radiology to perform and report SGUS exams. METHODS: A retrosp

Robust classification from noisy labels: Integrating additional knowledge for chest radiography abnormality assessment.

Chest radiography is the most common radiographic examination performed in daily clinical practice for the detection of various heart and lung abnormalities. The large amount of data to be read and reported, with more than 100 studies per day for a single radiologist, poses a challenge in consistently maintaining high interpretation accuracy. The introduction of large-scale public datasets has led to a series of novel systems for automated abnormality classification. However, the labels of these datasets were obtained using natural language processed medical reports, yielding a large degree of

An LLM-supported just-in-time adaptive intervention delivered by a socially assistive robot for cognitive training in mild cognitive impairment: study protocol for an assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a clinically important stage at which non-pharmacological interventions may help preserve cognitive function and daily functioning. Existing digital cognitive training programs are often limited by static task progression, declining engagement, and insufficient responsiveness to moment-to-moment cognitive and emotional states. OBJECTIVE: This study protocol describes a single-center, parallel-group, assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial evaluating an adaptive cognitive training intervention delivered by a socially assistive robot and suppo

Dysfunctional large-scale networks linking PTSD and cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased risk of cognitive impairment (CI), but how large-scale network disruption relates to this vulnerability remains unclear. We examined whether PTSD and cognitive status interact to shape brain network organization. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI from 178 age-matched male participants (ADNI-DOD and ADNI cohorts) was analyzed within a 2 × 2 factorial design defined by PTSD status and cognitive status. Cognitive status was classified using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), with CI defined by a MoCA scor

Assessing artificial intelligence-generated patient discharge information for the emergency department: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Effective patient discharge information (PDI) in emergency departments (EDs) is vital and often more crucial than the diagnosis itself. Patients who are well informed at discharge tend to be more satisfied and experience better health outcomes. The combination of written and verbal instructions tends to improve patient recall. However, creating written discharge materials is both time-consuming and costly. With the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LMMs), there is potential for the efficient production of patient discharge documents. Th…

Intersection of Big Five Personality Traits and Substance Use on Social Media Discourse: AI-Powered Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits are known predictors of substance use (SU), but their expression and association with SU in digital discourse remain largely unexamined. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the online social engagement heightened and led to an amplification in SU rates, thereby creating a unique natural opportunity to investigate these dynamics through large-scale digital discourse data. In our study, we offer insights beyond traditional self-report methods, which are crucial for developing timely and targeted public health interventions. OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate whether the asso
