[Immediate implantation following tooth extraction in fresh maxillary molar socket with poor bone quality].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of immediate implantation after tooth extraction in the maxillary molar socket with poor bone quality beneath the sinus. METHODS: We collected the data from the patients undergoing extraction of maxillary molars with poor bone quality between the sockets and sinuses. Sinus lifting and immediate implant following the extraction were performed simultaneously in these cases, and the primary stability of the implants, wound healing, and changes of the sinus were observed. At 6 months after the operations, the crowns were installed on the implants. The mastica

Mast Cell Deficiency Limits the Development of Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common chronic diseases in adults in both developing and developed countries. The etiology and pathogenesis of CRS remain poorly understood, and the disease is refractory to therapy in many patients. Mast cell activation has been demonstrated in the sinonasal mucosa of patients with CRS; however, the specific contribution of mast cells to the development and pathogenesis of this disease has not been established. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the role of mast cells in the development of CRS. METHODS: C57BL

Clinical Outcome of One-Step Implant Therapy in the Severely Atrophic Posterior Maxilla: A 4- to 16-Year Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of one-step lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) in patients with severely atrophic posterior maxillae and to identify the accompanying risk factors for peri-implantitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this long-term retrospective case series study, clinical data were obtained from the Periodontic Department at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital. The one-step, nonsubmerged LSFE procedure enabled simultaneous implant placement in sites with a residual bone height (RBH) < 5 mm. In total, 54 patients and 65 sinuses received 107 implants to support fixed reconstructions over a p

An adolescent girl with syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion preceding the diagnosis of olfactory neuroblastoma - a case report.

OBJECTIVES: We present an adolescent in whom olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) was detected on follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 2.5 years after SIADH diagnosis. Our case contrasts prior pediatric reports in which ONB and SIADH were diagnosed concurrently. CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 13-year-old girl was found to have SIADH during evaluation for restrictive eating. Work-up ruled out adrenal, thyroid and paraneoplastic causes, diuretic use, and vasopressin receptor and aquaporin channel mutations. Brain MRI was normal except for paranasal sinus (PNS) inflammatory changes to th

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of the distribution of spray and irrigation devices within the sinonasal cavities.

BACKGROUND: Optimizing intranasal distribution and retention of nasal sprays is essential in the management of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), including those that have had functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Despite multiple existing distribution studies, there remains a need for a technique that allows regionalization of particle deposition within a patient's unique 3-dimensional (3D) geometry without exposing the patient to radiation. METHODS: Seven participants delivered normal saline containing a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) by either saline irrigation or na

Sinonasal Ewing Sarcoma: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the sinonasal tract and associated primitive neuroectodermal tumors are rare. To our knowledge, only 10 case reports of sinonasal ES of the nose or paranasal sinuses have been reported. Furthermore, there has been only 1 case of sinonasal ES arising from the middle turbinate. Recommended management of sinonasal ES stems from the management of its osseous counterpart, ES, but treatment with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy is varied. Five-year survival rates vary from 21% to 70%, with the lower rates representing patients presenting with metastatic dis

Current Concepts in Adult Acute Rhinosinusitis.

Acute rhinosinusitis is one of the most common conditions that physicians treat in ambulatory care. Most cases of acute rhinosinusitis are caused by viral upper respiratory infections. A meta-analysis based on individual patient data found that common clinical signs and symptoms were not effective for identifying patients with rhinosinusitis who would benefit from antibiotics. C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate are somewhat useful tests for confirming acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis. Four signs and symptoms that significantly increase the likelihood of a bacterial cause …

Minimal invasive treatment of liver and kidney metastasis in mucosal melanoma of the right inferior turbinate.

This case report describes an 80-year-old female patient who initially presented with nasal epistaxis. The patient had a history of atrial fibrillation and arterial hypertension. Computed tomography of the facial sinuses revealed a large mass in the inferior right turbinate with slight expansion into the maxillary sinus. Endoscopic excision of the right nasal cavity was performed, and the histologic workup revealed mucosal melanoma of the nasal cavity (cT3, cN0, cM0). A medial maxillectomy of the right side, including 2 biopsies within 1 month, showed no signs of recurrence. After 1 year, the
