The impact of psychopathology on academic performance in school-age children and adolescents.

Psychiatric symptoms have consistently been associated with negative educational outcomes. However, possible confounding variables, such as comorbid mental and environmental conditions, have not been well addressed. This study examined whether mental health problems were significantly linked to academic performance in a Spanish school-based sample, after adjustment for co-occurring psychiatric symptoms and multiple contextual factors. Parents completed a questionnaire regarding child's sociodemographic characteristics (i.e., gender, age, type of school, socioeconomic status, ethnicity), stress

Differences in associations between problematic video-gaming, video-gaming duration, and weapon-related and physically violent behaviors in adolescents.

Seemingly mixed findings have been reported on possible relationships between video-gaming and violent or aggressive behaviors. Given the prevalence of gaming in adolescents and potential harms associated with violent behaviors, relationships between problematic gaming, gaming engagement, and risk behaviors involving weapons and physical violence require further research. This study examined in a large sample of high-school students the relationships between problem-gaming severity, gaming duration, and violence-related measures including weapon-carrying, having been threatened by someone with

Violence - suicide and suicidal ideation as sequelae of trauma in substance use disorder inpatients.

Experience with psychological trauma is overrepresented among substance use disorder (SUD) patients. SUDs may also be a risk factor for violent behaviors, suicidal ideation and suicide. This study proposes a link between these phenomena. Based on data from the EuropASI clinical interview of 137 SUD inpatients we computed a composite variable of trauma experience from being abused. We report descriptive data and cross tabulated problems controlling violent behavior, suicidal ideation or suicide attempts variables with trauma experience. Hypothesizing an association between experienced trauma an

The relationship between sex-related alcohol expectancies and hazardous drinking among persons with HIV disease.

Hazardous drinking is a clinically significant problem among persons with HIV (PWH) disease, and is associated with a number of poor outcomes. Hazardous drinking among PWH is associated with risky substance use and sexual behavior, but little work has examined factors that may be associated with greater hazardous drinking and subsequent risky sexual behaviors among PWH. Research among the general population suggests that sex-related alcohol expectancies, defined as drinking to enhance sexual experience, increase sexual risk-taking, and disinhibition of sexual behavior, are associated with grea

Inhibition of diet-restriction-induced behavioral deficits by tryptophan administration in rats.

Diet has a great impact on brain health and function. It plays an important role to improve and control a number of psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, hyperactivity and behavioral impulsivity. Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is one of the psychiatric disorder which is associated with diet. In AN, patients show extreme dieting, weight loss, hyperactivity, depression/anxiety, self-control and behavioral impulsivity. Previous studies showed that during diet restriction, tryptophan decreases serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) metabolism in the brain due to its less availability and contri

Similar hyporesponsiveness of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex in problem gamblers and heavy smokers during an inhibitory control task.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral addictions like pathological gambling share many clinical characteristics with substance dependence. In addition, both types of disorders are associated with impairments in inhibitory control. Studies in patients with substance use disorders point to hyporesponsiveness of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex. However, no such data exist on behavioral addictions. METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neural circuitry associated with impaired response inhibition in a group of male problem gamblers (n=17) using a stop signal task. We includ

Nonverbal learning disability, school behavior, and dyslexia.

The aims of the study were to investigate whether children showing a low nonverbal/high verbal (LNV) WISC-R profile are more likely to exhibit behaviors conducive to school failure than children with a low verbal/high nonverbal (LV) profile, and to examine the relationships among these behaviors, the LNV/LV profiles, and reading ability. The 65 subjects included 27 LNV and 38 LV children, aged 5 to 11 years. Results confirmed earlier findings (Badian 1986) that LNV children are perceived by their teachers as significantly poorer than LV children in many behaviors associated with school success

[Caregiver Stress in Foster and Adoptive Parents of Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders].

Caregiver Stress in Foster and Adoptive Parents of Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Foster and adoptive parents of 71 children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) report on developmental and behavioral characteristics, family stress, coping resources and their satisfaction with support. The data reveal an elevated rate of social and emotional problems in the children. In spite positive individual and social resources, the foster and adoptive parents feel a high level of caregiver stress. 30 % of them rate the support they receive from pediatric, therapeutic or educational services

How Caregivers Make Meaning of Child Mental Health Problems: Toward Understanding Caregiver Strain and Help Seeking.

Family caregivers' conceptualizations of their child's emotional and behavioral problems (EBP) influence help-seeking for the child and caregiver strain. We analyzed 21 interviews with caregivers to explore their conceptualizations about the cause of their child's EBP, their experiences of strain, and their reported help-seeking behaviors. Caregivers had divergent conceptualizations of their child's EBP: 12 caregivers viewed the EBP as caused by a disorder and described the onset of symptoms as the central stressful event, whereas 9 caregivers described their child's problems as a response to

Delinquency and family problems in incarcerated adolescents with and without a history of inhalant use.

In this retrospective study of incarcerated adolescents, inhalants were used by significantly more nonminority than minority youth. Among both minority and nonminority groups, family problems and delinquent behaviors were higher among those youth with a history of inhalant use than those who reported no use. Family problems included history of running away from home, breaking rules, fighting with parents, and having relatives who had attempted suicide. Delinquent behavior included earlier personal use of drugs, selling illegal drugs, buying drugs from dealers, committing crimes while under the

Semi-automatic sigmoid colon segmentation in CT for radiation therapy treatment planning via an iterative 2.5-D deep learning approach.

Automatic sigmoid colon segmentation in CT for radiotherapy treatment planning is challenging due to complex organ shape, close distances to other organs, and large variations in size, shape, and filling status. The patient bowel is often not evacuated, and CT contrast enhancement is not used, which further increase problem difficulty. Deep learning (DL) has demonstrated its power in many segmentation problems. However, standard 2-D approaches cannot handle the sigmoid segmentation problem due to incomplete geometry information and 3-D approaches often encounters the challenge of a limited tra

Problem gambling, coping motivations, and positive expectancies: A longitudinal survey study.

Previous research suggests that gambling motives are important considerations in understanding the etiology and maintenance of gambling-related problems. The present work sought to examine whether beliefs about gambling, such as positive expectations for gambling, may be related to coping motivations for gambling over time and how both might be related to problem gambling behavior. Additionally, the present study sought to establish these relationships above and beyond trait neuroticism. To accomplish these goals, a 6-month longitudinal survey study of Internet using adults was conducted using

An empirical typology of lifetime and current gambling behaviors: association with health status of older adults.

PURPOSE: Despite the low prevalence of gambling problems, older adults experience poorer health status given certain vulnerabilities associated with aging. Thus, we aimed to classify lifetime (LPG) and current (CPG) problem gambling patterns, identify determinants of gambling patterns, and examine their association with current health status. METHODS: Using older adult gamblers (n = 489) in the Gambling Impact and Behavior Study, Latent Class Analysis classified LPG and CPG subgroups based on 10 DSM-IV criteria: preoccupation, tolerance, withdrawal, loss of control, escape, chasing losses, ly

A cognitive neuroscience approach to studying the role of overconfidence in problem gambling.

Research on the neural correlates of decision making in gambling tasks may be informative for understanding problem gambling. The present study explored confidence and overconfidence using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to measure brain activity during a judgment task. Nineteen undergraduates who self-identified as frequent gamblers (average age 19.7 years; 5 females, 14 males) participated in this study. Participants first completed the DIGS (Winters, Specker & Stinchfield, 2002), a measure of gambling pathology. They then engaged in a behavioral task of confidence assessment, wherein they answ

[Adoption and its psychiatric aspects].

Adoption has changed in history, in different cultures, in law, in its goals, its functions, its modalities. The study of the adoptive condition is worthwhile for theoretical research (psychopathology, genetics, etc.) and for clinical practice (prevention, selection and motivation analysis of adopting parents). It is dangerous and too simple to explain pathology by adoption. However, there is a specific psychopathology of adoptees : 1. by maternal deprivation and abandonnement pathology (more frequent and more important), 2. by the adoptive situation condition itself. We review some hypotheses

Adverse Childhood Experiences: Mental Health Consequences and Risk Behaviors in Women and Men in Chile.

UNLABELLED: Studies conducted worldwide indicate that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are among the most intense and frequent sources of stress, considerably influencing mental and physical health while also resulting in risk behaviors in adulthood. METHODOLOGY: We used data from the Pilot National Survey of Adversity and Sexual Abuse in Childhood (2020), conducted by CUIDA UC, which comprises the Adverse Childhood Experiences International Questionnaire [ACE-IQ] (Adapted). The cross-sectional methodology used made it possible to directly calculate the prevalence of adverse childhood exp

Relationship Between Leaving Children at Home Alone and Their Mental Health: Results From the A-CHILD Study in Japan.

Leaving children at home alone is considered a form of "neglect" in most developed countries. In Japan, this practice is not prohibited, probably because this country is considered to have relatively safe communities for children. The impact of leaving children at home alone on their mental health is a controversial issue, and few studies have examined it to date. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of leaving children aged 6 or 7 years at home alone on their mental health, focusing on both the positive and negative aspects; that is, resilience, difficult behavior, and prosocial be

Neurobehavioral comorbidities of pediatric epilepsies are linked to thalamic structural abnormalities.

PURPOSE: Neurobehavioral comorbidities are common in pediatric epilepsy with enduring adverse effects on functioning, but their neuroanatomic underpinning is unclear. Striatal and thalamic abnormalities have been associated with childhood-onset epilepsies, suggesting that epilepsy-related changes in the subcortical circuit might be associated with the comorbidities of children with epilepsy. We aimed to compare subcortical volumes and their relationship with age in children with complex partial seizures (CPS), childhood absence epilepsy (CAE), and healthy controls (HC). We examined the shared

A comparison of the behavioral and emotional disorders of primary school-going orphans and non-orphans in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the emotional and behavioral problems of orphans in Rakai District, Uganda, and to suggest interventions. Studies, elsewhere, have shown orphans to have high levels of psychological problems. However, in Uganda such studies are limited and no specific interventions have been suggested. METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional unmatched case control design to compare emotional and behavioral problems of 210 randomly selected primary school-going orphans and 210 non-orphans using quantitative and qualitative methods employing standardized questionnaires,
