Intraoperative monitoring of myocardial oxygenation during open-heart surgery: feasibility and initial performance.

Myocardial protection during cardiopulmonary bypass relies on intermittent administrations of cardioplegia without continuous, tissue‑level feedback on myocardial oxygen supply and mitochondrial metabolic status. Extended near‑infrared spectroscopy (eNIRS) can enable real-time intramyocardial monitoring of hemoglobin/myoglobin oxygen saturation (SHb/Mb) and cytochrome c oxidase oxidation (OCcO) for assessment of cardiac oxygen availability and utilization during surgery. In this prospective, single-center feasibility study, myocardial eNIRS monitoring was carried out in 15 adults undergoing ao

Higher in-hospital proportion of breast milk intake improves brain functional connectivity and neurological assessment in preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm infants may face neurodevelopmental challenges linked to altered brain maturation processes. This study aimed to investigate the impact of in-hospital breast milk intake on brain resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) and neurological assessment at discharge in preterm infants. METHODS: We collected data on breast milk intake from 97 preterm infants, evaluated neurological outcomes using the Amiel-Tison Neurological Assessment (ATNAT), and assessed rs-FC via functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Groups were stratified by breast milk intake proportion (cutoff

Attentional responses to the color exposure sequence of landscape paintings: evidence from fNIRS and eye-tracking.

INTRODUCTION: Color is a critical determinant of esthetic experience, shaping both immersion and cognitive responses. However, the extent to which the sequence of color exposure modulates the interplay between neural activation and ocular behavior remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: Ten chromatic landscape paintings were collected and converted into achromatic versions, yielding a total of 20 visual stimuli. Participants were assigned to two conditions: Condition A (achromatic to chromatic) and Condition B (chromatic to achromatic). Visual attention and prefrontal activation were asse

Ventilator-induced brain injury: another iatrogenic complication of mechanical ventilation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mechanical ventilation is life-saving, but is increasingly recognized to be involved in adverse neurological outcomes. Ventilator-associated brain injury (VABI) refers to primary brain dysfunction directly attributable to mechanical ventilation, independent of sedation, hypoxemia, or sepsis. This review summarizes current evidence on the pathophysiology, clinical impact, monitoring strategies, and potential therapeutic interventions for VABI. RECENT FINDINGS: A growing number of preclinical and clinical studies suggest that mechanical ventilation contributes to hippocampal

Ultrasensitive NIR-II Surface-Enhanced Resonance Raman Scattering Nanoprobes with Nonlinear Photothermal Effect for Optimized Phototheranostics.

Surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window has great potential for improved phototheranostics, but lacks nonfluorescent, resonant and high-affinity Raman dyes. Herein, it is designed and synthesize a multi-sulfur Raman reporter, NF1064, whose maximum absorption of 1064 nm rigidly resonates with NIR-II excitation laser while possessing absolutely nonfluorescent backgrounds. Ultrafast spectroscopy suggests that the fluorescence quenching mechanism of NF1064 originates from twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) in the excited state. Gol

Body Size, Cerebral Blood Flow, Ambient Temperature, and Relative Brain Temperatures in Newborn Infants under Incubator Care.

Subtle changes in body temperature affect the outcomes of ill newborns. However, the temperature profile of neonatal brains remains largely unknown. In open-cot care, increased cerebral perfusion is correlated with higher superficial brain temperatures. This study investigated the dependence of brain temperature (relative to rectal temperature) on ambient temperature, body size, cerebral perfusion, and metabolism in infants receiving incubator care. Rectal, scalp, and brain temperatures, superior vena cava flow, and brain oxygenation were assessed using echocardiography, thermo-compensatory te

One single-person bicycling enhances interpersonal cooperation via increasing interpersonal neural synchronization in left frontal cortex.

Previous findings have shown a strong relationship between sports and interpersonal cooperative behavior. Physical activity is the basic form of sport. In this study, we investigated the effect of physical activity on interpersonal cooperative behavior and its inter-brain correlates. Eighty college students were recruited and randomly divided into the experimental or control group (20 dyads per each). The experimental group performed a 30-min of moderate intensity single-person cycling exercise, while the control group performed a 30-min single-person sitting. Interpersonal cooperative behavio

Exploring the neural basis and modulating factors of implicit altercentric spatial perspective-taking with fNIRS.

Humans spontaneously take the perspective of others when encoding spatial information in a scene, especially with agentive action cues present. This functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study explored how action observation influences implicit spatial perspective-taking (SPT) by adapting a left-right spatial judgment task to investigate whether transformation strategies underlying altercentric SPT can be predicted on the basis of cortical activation. Strategies associated with two opposing neurocognitive accounts (embodied versus disembodied) and their proposed neural correlates (huma

Impact of hydrogen gas inhalation during therapeutic hypothermia on cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation in the asphyxiated piglet.

We previously reported the neuroprotective potential of combined hydrogen (H2) gas ventilation therapy and therapeutic hypothermia (TH) by assessing the short-term neurological outcomes and histological findings of 5-day neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) encephalopathy piglets. However, the effects of H2 gas on cerebral circulation and oxygen metabolism and on prognosis were unknown. Here, we used near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy to compare combined H2 gas ventilation and TH with TH alone. Piglets were divided into three groups: HI insult with normothermia (NT, n = 10), HI insult with hyp

Parallel triplet formation pathways in a singlet fission material.

Harvesting long-lived free triplets in high yields by utilizing organic singlet fission materials can be the cornerstone for increasing photovoltaic efficiencies potentially. However, except for polyacenes, which are the most studied systems in the singlet fission field, spin-entangled correlated triplet pairs and free triplets born through singlet fission are relatively poorly characterized. By utilizing transient absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy in supramolecular aggregate thin films consisting of Hamilton-receptor-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives, we show that photo

Functional connectivity across dorsal and ventral attention networks in response to task difficulty and experimental pain.

The dorsal and ventral attention networks (DAN & VAN) provide a framework for studying attentional modulation of pain. It has been argued that cognitive demand distracts attention from painful stimuli via top-down reinforcement of task goals (DAN), whereas pain exerts an interruptive effect on cognitive performance via bottom-up pathways (VAN). The current study explores this explanatory framework by manipulating pain and task demand in combination with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and Granger Causal Connectivity Analyses (GCCA). Twenty-one participants played a racing game at

Treadmill training in Parkinson's disease is underpinned by the interregional connectivity in cortical-subcortical network.

Treadmill training (TT) has been extensively used as an intervention to improve gait and mobility in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Regional and global effects on brain activity could be induced through TT. Training effects can lead to a beneficial shift of interregional connectivity towards a physiological range. The current work investigates the effects of TT on brain activity and connectivity during walking and at rest by using both functional near-infrared spectroscopy and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Nineteen PD patients (74.0 ± 6.59 years, 13 males, disease duration 10
