Anguillulosis: circumstances of infestation and evolution towards the malignant form.

INTRODUCTION: Anguillulosis is a ubiquitous digestive parasitosis. Rare in Tunisia, it is due to a round worm, strongyloid stercoralis, whose natural lodging is the duodeno-jejunal mucosa. Its malignant form is rare but it represents a potentially life-threatening disease. AIM: We report a case of malignant anguillulosis occurring in a context of immunosuppression. OBSERVATION: The case we report is about a 46-year-old man treated by a long-term corticosteroid therapy for Takayasu disease. He was hospitalized for an acute digestive syndrome. Biopsies were performed but the evolution was rapi

Differences in the Importance of Mast Cells, Basophils, IgE, and IgG versus That of CD4+ T Cells and ILC2 Cells in Primary and Secondary Immunity to Strongyloides venezuelensis.

There is evidence that mast cells, basophils, and IgE can contribute to immune responses to parasites; however, the relative levels of importance of these effector elements in parasite immunity are not fully understood. Previous work in Il3-deficient and c-kit mutant KitW/W-v mice indicated that interleukin-3 and c-Kit contribute to expulsion of the intestinal nematode Strongyloides venezuelensis during primary infection. Our findings in mast cell-deficient KitW-sh/W-sh mice and two types of mast cell-deficient mice that have normal c-kit ("Hello Kitty" and MasTRECK mice) confirmed prior work

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis antibodies among a rural Appalachian population--Kentucky, 2013.

We investigated whether Strongyloides infection remains endemic in rural Kentucky's Appalachian regions; 7 of 378 (1.9%) participants tested positive for Strongyloides antibodies. We identified no statistically significant association between a positive test and travel to a known endemic country (P = 0.58), indicating that transmission in rural Kentucky might be ongoing.

The effect of infection history on the fitness of the gastrointestinal nematode Strongyloides ratti.

Hosts in nature will often acquire infections by different helminth species over their lifetime. This presents the potential for new infections to be affected (particularly via the host immune response) by a host's history of previous con- or hetero-specific infection. Here we have used an experimental rat model to investigate the consequences of a history of primary infection with either Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Strongyloides venezuelensis or S. ratti on the fitness of, and immunological response to, secondary infections of S. ratti. We found that a history of con-specific, but not heter

Detection and treatment of Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome following lung transplantation.

Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome has not been reported in lung transplant recipients. We describe the case of a 61-year-old Peruvian man, who received bilateral lung transplants for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and subsequently developed persistent fever with pulmonary infiltrates, ventilator dependence, and pneumothoraces. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cultures for bacteria, viruses, and fungi were negative, but testing for ova and parasites from BAL fluid revealed Strongyloides stercoralis larvae on day 16 post transplant. He was successfully treated with albendazole and ivermectin, an

Parastrongyloides trichosuri, a nematode parasite of mammals that is uniquely suited to genetic analysis.

Commonly studied nematode parasites have not proven amenable to simple genetic analyses and this has significantly reduced the available research options. We introduce here a nematode parasite of mammals, Parastrongyloides trichosuri, which has features uniquely suited for genetic analysis. This parasite has the capacity to undergo multiple reproductive cycles as a free-living worm and thereby amplify the numbers of its infective L3s in faeces. Culture conditions are presented that permit facile laboratory maintenance of this worm for >90 free-living life cycles (to date) without the need for

Effect of chronic ethanol consumption on protective T-helper 1 and T-helper 2 immune responses against the parasites Leishmania major and Strongyloides stercoralis in mice.

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption has been associated with significant increases in the prevalence of infectious diseases, and it has been suggested that these increases are caused by a direct effect of ethanol on the immune response. The objective of this study was to determine whether chronic ethanol consumption would affect the development of protective immunity to Leishmania major, which is controlled by the T-helper 1 (Th1) subset of CD4 cells, and Strongyloides stercoralis, which is controlled by the Th2 subset. METHODS: Mice were fed ethanol-containing liquid diet (25% ethanol-de

Efficacy of an in-feed formulation of ivermectin against somatic larvae of Strongyloides ransomi in pregnant swine.

OBJECTIVE: To confirm that ivermectin fed for 7 days to pregnant sows controls transmission of Strongyloides ransomi larvae to pigs via the colostrum or milk. ANIMALS: 24 mixed-breed sows. PROCEDURE: The sows were infected with 250,000 S ransomi larvae on 3 occasions (days 63, 64, or 65, days 71 or 73, and days 78, 79, or 80 of gestation). Eight sows received ivermectin at a dosage of 100 micrograms of ivermectin/kg of body weight/d from days 92 to 99 of gestation, and 8 sows were treated from days 103 to 110 of gestation; 8 remaining sows received unmedicated vehicle. Numbers of S ransomi l

Effect of Strongyloides stercoralis infection and eosinophilia on age at onset and prognosis of adult T-cell leukemia.

Onset of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) usually follows a long period of viral latency. Strongyloides stercoralis infection has been considered a cofactor of leukemogenesis. Hypereosinophilia (HE) is also observed and could be associated with either the presence of parasites or the leukemic process. In non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, eosinophilia may or may not affect prognosis. To determine whether infection with S stercoralis and therefore eosinophilia has a significant effect on the development of ATL, we studied two variables in 38 patients: age at onset and median survival rate. Infected (Ss+) patie

Bayesian estimation of disease prevalence and the parameters of diagnostic tests in the absence of a gold standard.

It is common in population screening surveys or in the investigation of new diagnostic tests to have results from one or more tests investigating the same condition or disease, none of which can be considered a gold standard. For example, two methods often used in population-based surveys for estimating the prevalence of a parasitic or other infection are stool examinations and serologic testing. However, it is known that results from stool examinations generally underestimate the prevalence, while serology generally results in overestimation. Using a Bayesian approach, simultaneous inferences

Strongyloides cf fuelleborni in Papua New Guinea: epidemiology in an isolated community, and results of an intervention study.

Strongyloides cf fuelleborni was found to be distributed homogeneously with respect to space and time in a semi-nomadic community in Papua New Guinean rainforest. The parasite predominantly infects children, reaching 60% prevalence in the first year of life and peaking around 80% at five years of age. Egg loads follow a similar pattern but peak earlier (at 20 months) and fall off more sharply. The few infected adults have very light infections as measured by egg count. In the first few months of life, incidence was estimated as 50% per month. Following treatment, incidence in older children wa

Central nervous system infection in the compromised host.

The possible causes of central nervous system infection in the compromised host are many. Careful consideration of the underlying defects in host defenses, the epidemiology of infection, and the clinical findings, however, can narrow these possibilities and focus diagnostic testing. Aggressive attempts at early diagnosis and therapy offer the potential for meaningful survival.

Larva currens and systemic disease.

Of 26 patients infested with Strongyloides stercoralis 10 (38.5%) were asymptomatic without systemic or cutaneous signs. Nine patients (34.6%) presented with systemic complaints only and seven patients (26.9%) had systemic and cutaneous manifestations. Further observations of the skin lesions on four of those with systemic and cutaneous manifestations revealed linear urticarial bands, extending to several centimeters within 1 hour and persisting up to many days, waiting and waning. Blood examination showed eosinophilia in all patients. These findings confirm the concept that larva currens even

The treatment and control of parasitic diseases.

In many parts of world, transmission of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum can no longer be controlled by insecticides. Furthermore, this species has developed an amazing capacity for resistance to polyvalent drugs. The advent of new drugs and the possibility of developing a vaccine offer some hope for control of falciparum malaria. The fact that the spread of many parasitic diseases is promoted by contaminated water supplies resulting from inadequate waste disposal raises important questions about the relevance of current research. The control of some endemic infections, like Chagas' diseas

Albendazole: a new broad spectrum anthelmintic. Double-blind multicenter clinical trial.

A new anthelmintic drug, albendazole, has been tested in a multicenter double-blind placebo controlled study in 392 patients from France and West Africa in children and adults with single or mixed infections caused by roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, threadworms and tapeworms. All patients were closely observed before and after treatment for clinical side effects, hematological or clinical blood chemical changes. Fecal samples obtained before, and 7 days and 21 days after treatment were examined using a concentration technic (Ritchie), a coproculture (Harada-Mori) and an egg count (Kato). Fol
