Comparison of ethambutol versus streptomycin during the intensive phase in treatment of tuberculous meningitis: an open-label randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The choice of the fourth drug in anti-tubercular therapy for adults with tuberculous meningitis (TBM) remains uncertain. This trial compared the effectiveness and safety of ethambutol (ETM) versus streptomycin (STM) during the intensive phase. METHODS: This is an investigator-initiated, single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial conducted during October 2020-June 2025. The study was stopped early because of slow recruitment. Patients were randomized to receive either STM (15 mg/kg intramuscular daily; ~90 injections) with isoniazid (H) 5 mg/kg (~300 mg/d), rifampicin (

Capsanthin from Capsicum annum fruits exerts anti-glaucoma, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activity, and corneal pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression in a benzalkonium chloride-induced rat dry eye model.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a complex ocular surface inflammatory disease. Its occurrence varies widely over the world, ranging from 5% to 34%. The use of preservatives, specifically benzalkonium chloride, in the ocular drops worsens the DED conditions. Furthermore, the Covid-19 pandemic increased screen time and the use of face masks and shields. As a result, the number of people suffering from dry eye disease (DED) has increased significantly in recent years. The main objective of our study is to find a solution to manage the dry eye disease (DED) preferably from natural source without any adve

The integration of frailty into clinical practice: preliminary results from the Gérontopôle.

BACKGROUND: Disability is commonly considered as an irreversible condition of advanced age. Therefore, preventive actions need to be taken before the disabling cascade is fully established, that is in the pre-disability phase defined "frailty syndrome". The complexity and heterogeneity of frailty requires a clinical approach based on multidimensionality and multidisciplinary. In this paper, we present the main characteristics of the newborn Platform for Evaluation of Frailty and Prevention of Disability (Toulouse, France). INTERVENTION: Persons aged 65 years and older screened for frailty by

Temporal Changes in Fixational Eye Movements After Concussion in Adolescents and Adults: Preliminary Findings.

Concussions often involve ocular impairment and symptoms such as convergence insufficiency, accommodative insufficiency, blurred vision, diplopia, eye strain, and pain. Current clinical assessments of ocular function and symptoms rely on subjective symptom reporting and/or involve lengthy administration time. More objective, brief assessments of ocular function following concussion are warranted. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in fixational eye movements (FEMs) and their association with clinical outcomes including recovery time, symptoms, cognitive and vestibular/ocular mot

High-dose biologics and bioconjugates delivery: Integrating molecular optimization with device design and routes of administration.

In recent years, biologics-based modalities have increased significantly across various therapeutic areas. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and emerging bioconjugates such as antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and antibody-oligonucleotide conjugate (AOCs) now span oncology and immunology areas. This growth has made delivery method and route of administration central to the drug product design. From a patient perspective there is a need for improved treatment accessibility and convenience. This need has driven a transition from intravenous (IV) infusion to subcutaneous (SC) delivery. The shift has acc

Using Text Messaging Surveys in General Practice Research to Engage With People From Low-Income Groups: Multi-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: SMS text messages through mobile phones are a common means of interpersonal communication. SMS text message surveys are gaining traction in health care and research due to their feasibility and patient acceptability. However, challenges arise in implementing SMS text message surveys, especially when targeting marginalized populations, because of barriers to accessing phones and data as well as communication difficulties. In primary care, traditional surveys (paper-based and online) often face low response rates that are particularly pronounced among disadvantaged groups due to fina

Estimation of Vitamin D Levels in Patients With Retinal Vein Occlusions and a Comparison With Age-Matched Control Groups.

Background In the older population, retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a major contributor to vision loss and blindness. RVO is the second most common form of retinal vascular disease, following diabetic retinopathy. On the other hand, there is a paucity of studies on vitamin D insufficiency and its influence on the causation of RVOs. The goal of this study is to demonstrate a link between vitamin D levels of individuals in rural India who have RVOs. Methods This study is a hospital-based prospective case-control study. All patients aged 18 years and above with RVO visiting the ophthalmology outp
