BACKGROUND: Chromomycosis is a rare mycotic infection encountered in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease presents as a slowly-evolving nodule that can become infected with bacteria. Here, we describe a unique association of abscesses caused by a chromomycosis and Listeria monocytogenes in a kidney transplant recipient, and didactically expose how the appropriate diagnosis was reached.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year old male originating from the Caribbean presented a scalp lesion which was surgically removed in his hometown where it was misdiagnosed as a sporotrichosis on histology, 3

A novel fungal species is described originating from the left occipital lobe of the cerebrum of an 18-month-old spayed female cat in Australia. Neurological disorder of the animal became apparent by circling movements and uncoordinated behaviour. Sequencing of the SSU rRNA gene reveals this strain as belonging to the genus Fonsecaea in Chaetothyriales. This order includes many black yeasts and relatives known as etiologic agents of disease in humans and animals, including several neurotropic species. Novelty of the species was corroborated by morphology and by multilocus sequencing of the ribo

Conidiobolus coronatus is recognized as a human pathogen causing subcutaneous fungal infection of the face in immunocompetent patients. The disease process is usually benign. We report, what we believe to be the first case of intracranial extension of C. coronatus producing rhino-orbitocerebral syndrome, and subsequent dissemination of C. coronatus in an immunocompetent patient.

Pulmonary amoebiasis without liver involvement occurs sporadically as a result of haematogenous spread from a primary site, the colon. The case history is presented of a patient who developed superior vena cava syndrome due to a pulmonary amoebic abscess without liver involvement. He was initially suspected of having a neoplasm but a combination of tests including histological examination of the H&E stained excised tissue, immunofluorescence using anti-Entamoeba histolytica antibodies, and serology confirmed the diagnosis of amoebiasis. To our knowledge this is the first description of pulmona

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: There are increasing reports of nasal sinus mucopyoceles eroding the base of the cranium and causing the rapid onset of neurological complications. Uncommon presentations can mimic tumors, but the infectious nature mandates an urgent surgical decompression. It is important to document these uncommon presentations. CLINICIAL PRESENTATION: A mucopyocele of the clivus is reported in a patient with a frequent history of sinusitis. Diplopia caused by an acute sixth nerve palsy prompted the radiological diagnosis with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Scedosporium apiospermum, an anamorph of Pseudallescheria boydii, is a hyalohyphomycete which can be mistaken, histologically, for Aspergillus. S. apiospermum is clinically distinguished by resistance to most antifungals and its ability to cause invasive mycoses in immunocompetent patients. Here we present a typical case of lethal cerebral Pseudallescheria mycosis in a child after near-drowning.

The authors report on 13 cerebral abscesses developed in children with cyanogenic heart disease. The abscesses have been treated by one or several punctures and by a general antibiotherapy adjusted to the germ when it was isolated. C.T. Scan and epidural Intra-cranial pressure monitoring have defined the Therapeutic tactics. The mortality rate is 7.7%. 60% of the survivors lead a normal life; 40% are mentally retarded; however this mental retardation is not directly related to the abscess; it appears to be a consequence of the cyanogenic cardiopathy. The neurological sequelae are one epilepsy

A case is presented with chronic suppurative otitis media and subsequent tympanogenic labyrinthitis, extradural abscess, and otogenic meningitis. The clinical course is described and pathologic findings demonstrated using serial temporal bone sections. The difficulties of diagnosing and treating this clinical condition are illustrated.

RATIONALE: Streptococcus anginosus mostly colonizes the digestive and genitourinary system, including the oropharyngeal region. It commonly causes invasive pyogenic infection, but less likely causes infective endocarditis (IE).
PATIENT CONCERNS: An 18-year-old woman who had an underlying mitral valve prolapse without mitral regurgitation presented to our hospital with low-grade fever, left leg weakness, and left abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with brain infarction and microabscess as well as IE. The patient totally recovered after the 6-week course of intravenous antibiotics.
DIAGNOSIS: B

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to review the pathogenesis and the result of management of the intracranial complications of chronic middle ear suppuration.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of charts of 32 cases with intracranial complications due to chronic middle ear infection managed between 1993 and 2007. The symptoms, clinical findings, and medical and surgical management were reviewed and analyzed.
RESULTS: There were 10 (31.2%) patients in the age group of 0 to 10 years, 9 (28.1%) patients in the age group of 11 to 18 years, and 13 (40.6%) patients older than 18 years. Mal

A 50-year-old man presented with progressive visual loss, headache, and two days of confusion. A computed tomography of his head suggested subarachnoid hemorrhage with accompanying right parietal ischemic infarction. The magnetic resonance image was consistent with right parietal perisulcal pial and superficial cortical inflammation; a subjacent vasogenic edema with a 1 cm diameter abscess was also present. Funduscopy revealed bilateral multifocal choroidal lesions and retinal perivascular sheathing. He was diagnosed with pseudosubarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to cryptococcal meningitis and c
