We report six cases of protein S deficiency secondary to varicella. Five cases were complicated by thrombotic and vascular events, namely purpura fulminans and necrotic vasculitis, deep vein thrombosis and stroke. Two cases were associated with protein C deficiency and one case revealed a heterozygous factor XII deficiency. The underlying mechanism of this acquired protein S deficiency is unclear but could be related to a direct effect of zoster virus.

Single fibre electromyography (SFEMG) was studied in 40 patients with the post-viral fatigue syndrome. These patients were also assessed clinically, serologically, virologically and immunologically. About 75% of the patients had definitely abnormal SFEMG results. This was regarded as evidence of abnormality in the peripheral part of the motor unit. The muscle fibre was the likely site of involvement.

For prevention of nosocomial infection, 25 infants including high risk patients received an emergency injection of live varicella vaccine. Three patients developed a rash within 5 days after vaccination, but their symptoms were mild. The other 22 showed no clinical symptoms and gave an immune response. Twenty-two patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy were vaccinated and 20 of them showed a positive response in the varicella skin test. Some major epidemiologic features of Reye syndrome have been elucidated since the first description of this clinical entity.
