Benchmarking CuₙO (n = 1, 2) complexes via ab initio methods: structural, electronic, and thermodynamic insights with biochemical relevance.

CONTEXT: Copper is an essential trace element that plays a central role in redox chemistry and electron transfer processes in biological systems. To gain a deeper understanding of the electronic behavior of copper species, we carried out a comparative evaluation of the Cu2 and CuO molecules, focusing on key properties such as ionization energy, electron affinity, vibrational frequencies, bond lengths, and dissociation energies. Cu2 serves as a model for dinuclear copper sites present in metalloproteins like tyrosinase and hemocyanin, while CuO captures the essential features of copper-oxygen b

Dementia Risk and Machine Learning-Derived Brain Age Index from Sleep Electroencephalography: A Pooled Cohort Analysis of Over 7,000 Individuals Across Five Community Cohorts.

IMPORTANCE: Sleep electroencephalographic (EEG) microstructures are closely related to cognition and undergo age-dependent changes. However, their multidimensional nature makes them challenging to interpret using conventional approaches. Machine learning-computed EEG brain age index (BAI) represents the difference between the sleep EEG-based brain age and chronological age, quantifying deviations in sleep EEG microstructures from normative patterns. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between sleep BAI and incident dementia in community-dwelling populations. DESIGN: Five individual cohor

Accuracy of Orthodontic Anchor Screw Placement Using a 3D-Printed Surgical Guide.

Background Although radiographs and computed tomography (CT) images are reviewed before temporary anchorage device (TAD) implantation, implantation of TADs exactly as planned is difficult. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of TAD implantation using an original surgical guide fabricated using cone-beam CT data and computer-aided design software. Methodology The study participants included six experienced orthodontists who had implanted ≥20 TADs, and six inexperienced orthodontists who had never implanted a TAD. Maxillary dental typodont models with radiopaque tooth crowns and roots were

A high-accuracy and high-efficiency digital volume correlation method to characterize in-vivo optic nerve head biomechanics from optical coherence tomography.

In-vivo optic nerve head (ONH) biomechanics characterization is emerging as a promising way to study eye physiology and pathology. We propose a high-accuracy and high-efficiency digital volume correlation (DVC) method to characterize the in-vivo ONH deformation from optical coherence tomography (OCT) volumes. Using a combination of synthetic tests and analysis of OCTs from monkey ONHs subjected to acutely elevated intraocular pressure, we demonstrate that our proposed methodology overcame several challenges for conventional DVC methods: First, a pre-registration technique was used to remove la

Volumetric quantification of choroid and Haller's sublayer using OCT scans: An accurate and unified approach based on stratified smoothing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The choroid, a dense vascular structure in the posterior segment of the eye, maintains the health of the retina by supplying oxygen and nutrients, and assumes clinical significance in screening ocular diseases including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). As a technological assist, algorithmic estimation of choroidal biomarkers has been suggested based on sectional (B-scan) optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. However, most such 2D estimation techniques are compute-intensive, yet enjoy limited accuracy and have onl

Intestinal toxicity of deoxynivalenol is limited by supplementation with Lactobacillus plantarum JM113 and consequentially altered gut microbiota in broiler chickens.

Marchiafava Bignami disease (MBD) is a neurological disorder characterized by myelin degeneration and tissue necrosis within the central nervous system. This condition predominantly afflicts individuals with chronic alcohol abuse and malnutrition. The most distinctive pathological feature of MBD is the necrotic degeneration specifically observed in the corpus callosum; however, emerging evidence also indicates the potential involvement of other brain regions. The main pathophysiological mechanisms involve alcohol consumption, which leads to thiamine depletion and disrupts various metabolic pat

A human ventricular cell model for investigation of cardiac arrhythmias under hyperkalaemic conditions.

In this study, several modifications were introduced to a recently proposed human ventricular action potential (AP) model so as to render it suitable for the study of ventricular arrhythmias. These modifications were driven by new sets of experimental data available from the literature and the analysis of several well-established cellular arrhythmic risk biomarkers, namely AP duration at 90 per cent repolarization (APD(90)), AP triangulation, calcium dynamics, restitution properties, APD(90) adaptation to abrupt heart rate changes, and rate dependence of intracellular sodium and calcium concen

Profile-QSAR: a novel meta-QSAR method that combines activities across the kinase family to accurately predict affinity, selectivity, and cellular activity.

Profile-QSAR is a novel 2D predictive model building method for kinases. This "meta-QSAR" method models the activity of each compound against a new kinase target as a linear combination of its predicted activities against a large panel of 92 previously studied kinases comprised from 115 assays. Profile-QSAR starts with a sparse incomplete kinase by compound (KxC) activity matrix, used to generate Bayesian QSAR models for the 92 "basis-set" kinases. These Bayesian QSARs generate a complete "synthetic" KxC activity matrix of predictions. These synthetic activities are used as "chemical descripto

Systematic Bias in Comparative Evaluations of Machine Learning Versus Logistic Regression for Clinical Prediction Models: A Meta-Research Analysis Using Trauma Mortality as an Empirical Case.

OBJECTIVE: Comparative evaluations of machine learning (ML) and logistic regression (LR) for clinical prediction frequently report ML as superior, but the methodological framework producing those comparisons has received limited scrutiny. We aimed to quantify the apparent discrimination advantage of ML over LR using trauma mortality prediction as an empirical case, and to characterise the evaluation practices that shape it. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis combined with a meta-research appraisal of evaluation practices, using trauma mortality predic
