This review summarizes adverse reactions probably or possibly attributable to oral ciprofloxacin therapy in worldwide clinical experience involving over 6500 patients. In Europe and Japan the overall incidence of adverse reactions amongst patients receiving ciprofloxacin is reported to be 3.0% and 6.5%, respectively. An increased incidence (13.4%) has been reported from the U.S.A., possibly relating to the use of higher dosages. Very few reactions have necessitated withdrawal of treatment. The most common adverse effects involve the gastro-intestinal system (2-8% of patients treated) and usual

Between 1973 and 1981, 223 patients were seen at hôpital Sainte-Justine in Montreal for enteroviral infection of the nervous system. In 161 the cause was documented by isolation of an enterovirus from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The viruses most frequently isolated were echovirus 11 (36 isolates), echovirus 30 (24), coxsackievirus B2 (23), coxsackievirus B3 (19), echovirus 6 (18), coxsackievirus B5 (16), coxsackievirus A9 (15), echovirus 9 (13), echovirus 7 (12) and coxsackievirus B1 (11). Aseptic meningitis was diagnosed in 200 cases and encephalitis in 12. The remaining 11 patients presen

BACKGROUND: Patients with convulsive seizures constitute a significant group in acute neurology. No common European clinical practice guidelines on prehospital seizure management exist, and today most patients are brought to hospital for seizure treatment, with great variation in which prehospital treatment is provided. Only 33 % of status epilepticus patients receive a benzodiazepine as first anti-seizure medication (ASM). The aim of this study is to assess the prehospital seizure control protocols in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Norway, and compare these with current evidence for

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is underused, logistically challenging for those who are justice-involved, and laced with ethical problems for those on death row. Herein we describe a case of a man without history of long-standing psychiatric illness who, after more than 15 years on death row, was hospitalized for altered mental status. After medical stabilization, the altered mental status persisted. On exam, he displayed signs of catatonic stupor with repetitive non-goal-directed motor activity, repetition of words, rigidity, and negativism, among others. The Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Sc…

BACKGROUND: The aim was to explore the treatment of a case of congenital thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura induced by pregnancy complicated with cerebral vasospasm.
METHODS: We present a case study of congenital TTP where disease onset occurred during two separate pregnancies. Interestingly, the disease course exhibited distinct differences on each occasion. Additionally, following plasma transfusion therapy, there was a transient occurrence of cerebral vasospasm.
RESULTS: In this case, ADAMTS13 levels reached their lowest point three days after delivery during the first pregnancy, trigger

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a neurotoxic state which is characterized by seizures, headache, visual disturbances, paresis, and altered mental status. Golimumab is anti-tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor (anti-TNF-α) that can be used in the treatment of rheumatologic diseases. Here, we present a patient who had developed PRES after golimumab treatment for ankylosing spondylitis (AS). A 45-year-old female patient was admitted to the emergency service with a newly onset severe headache, loss of vision in both eyes, and two generalized tonic-clonic seizures that lasted fo

Nerve agent poisoning is still a threat to civilization. Nerve agents function by binding with the enzyme acetylcholinesterase irreversibly. Accumulation of acetylcholine in the synapse causes over-stimulation of muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptors. Thus miosis, glandular hyper secretion, bronchoconstriction, vomiting, diarrhea and bradycardia occurs (by M1-M5 receptors stimulation); whereas convulsion and seizures occur due to the nicotinic receptors. Atropine is a non-selective muscarinic antagonists but no nicotinic antagonists are known. Seizures are controlled by diazepam

The frequency of bacterial factors causing central nervous system infections has decreased as a result of the development of our national immunization program. In this study, it is aimed to obtain the data of our local surveillance by defining the viral etiology in cases diagnosed with meningoencephalitis for 1 year. Previously healhty 186 children, who applied with findings suggesting viral meningoencephalitis to 8 different tertiary health centers between August 2018 and August 2019, in Istanbul, were included. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction.

We present a rare case of subdural empyema with cerebral arteritis and brain ischemia in the middle cerebral artery distribution secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. A 32-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of high fever and generalized convulsions. Computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed subdural empyema at the left convexity, with a small amount of air. An interruption of the right maxillary sinus floor corresponding to the alveolar process was evident on coronal CT. He was diagnosed as having subdural empyema caused by odontogenic maxillary si

Structured online surveys were used to explore the experiences of the parents of children with refractory epilepsy using medicinal cannabis in Mexico during September 2016. The surveys, which were completed in full, were reviewed, and 53 cases of children aged between 9 months and 18 years were identified. Of these, 43 cases (82%) were from Mexico and 10 (18%) were from Latin American countries. Of the 43 Mexican cases, the diagnoses were as follows: 20 cases (47%) had Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS); 13 cases (30%) had unspecified refractory epilepsy (URE); 8 cases (19%) had West syndrome (WS);

Beta-propeller protein-associated neurodegeneration (BPAN) is one of the neurodegenerative disorders characterized by iron deposition in the brain and is the only known disease in humans to be caused by an aberration in autophagocytosis. Here, we present the case of a 42-year-old woman with BPAN identified by the WDR45 mutation. From early childhood, she was recognized as having global developmental delay, and she frequently sucked her hand, which was considered to be a stereotypical movement. She had a febrile convulsion at 6 months of age but there was no history of epilepsy. The delay in la

BACKGROUND: Antiarrhythmic and antiepileptic drugs share some mechanisms of actions. Therefore, possibility of interactions between these in epileptic patients with cardiac arrhythmias is quite considerable. Herein, we attempted to assess interactions between propafenone and four conventional antiepileptic drugs: carbamazepine, valproate, phenytoin and phenobarbital.
METHODS: Effects of propafenone on seizures were determined in the electroconvulsive threshold test in mice. Interactions between propafenone and antiepileptic drugs were estimated in the model of maximal electroshock. Motor coor

INTRODUCTION: Paroxismal events can resemble epileptic seizures, however, some epileptic seizures, especially benign occipital childhood epilepsies can imitate migraine, cycling vomiting or encephalitis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was evaluation of clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) features and outcome in children with benign occipital childhood epilepsies.
METHODS: Investigation included 18 patients with benign occipital childhood epilepsies hospitalized in the period from 2007 to 2010. The diagnosis was based on clinical and EEG characteristics of seizures, while treatment i

PURPOSE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in patients. Prior to treatment, patients are usually given short-acting anaesthetics and muscle relaxants to avoid harm, e.g. musculoskeletal injury, during the convulsions. However, most molecular studies investigating the mechanism of action of ECT have not explored the potential effects of the pre-treatment with anaesthetic and/ or muscle relaxant.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We have carried out a targeted proteome analysis using multiplex immunoassay platform of serum samples before an…

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most common cause of acquired disability and death in children. Retrospective analysis showed 350 children, 128 (36.6%) girls and 222 (63.4%) boys who were hospitalized for injury of neurocranium in a 5 year-period in Dr. Josip Bencević General Hospital in Slavonski Brod. Most of them had both contusion and commotion (46.8%), followed by just contusion of the head (12.5%) and fractures of the skull (10.5%). The haemorrhages and hemathomas were less common (epidural, subdural, SAH) (3.2%). The procedures performed showed that in almost all children X-rays had

Non-herpetic acute limbic encephalitis (NHALE) is a cause-unknown, inflammatory disease entity that affects the limbic system restrictedly. Neuropathological changes of NHALE have been described in only one report. A 53-year-old Japanese woman developed high fever, disturbance of consciousness and intractable generalized convulsions. Her symptoms were resistant to aggressive therapy including corticosteroid, acyclovir, gamma-globulin and anticonvulsants, and progressed acutely, leading to status epilepticus at 6 days after the onset. Brain MRI revealed inflammatory changes restricted to the li

Here, we report the case of a 23-year-old man with type 1 renal tubular acidosis (RTA) associated with osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) who developed pontine hemorrhage. Acute progressive tetraparesis had developed during the clinical course of the RTA. Neurological examination revealed bilateral weakness in all 4 limbs associated with severe hypokalemia (K 1.4 mEq/L). He experienced a sudden onset of general convulsions and mutism during the treatment for metabolic acidosis and hypokalemia. The T2-weighted MR image of the brain revealed multiple hyperintense signal lesions in the central

INTRODUCTION: Posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy syndrome (PRLS) is characterised by the sudden and usually transient onset of headaches, visual disorders, decreased awareness and convulsions associated with cerebral oedema in the posterior areas of the brain. Different reports have associated it with numerous processes and possibly with haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). We describe a new case of PRLS within the context of HUS.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 4-year-old child with HUS who developed arterial hypertension that did not respond well to treatment and kidney failure th
