Field evaluation of the efficacy of proprietary repellent formulations with IR3535 and picaridin against Aedes aegypti.

Seven proprietary repellent formulations (3 hydro-alcoholic spray solutions and 4 skin lotions) with active ingredient IR3,535 (ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate, EBAAP) or Picaridin (hydroxyethyl isobutyl piperidine carboxylate, KBR 3,023, Bayrepel) were tested in a field study on 10 test persons over a period of 10 h for their efficacy at preventing bites. The tests were conducted in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on field populations of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. The concentration of the active substances ranged from 10% to 20%. All the tested samples provided lasting protection (time

Conditioned media from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells improves movento induced lung damage in male rats.

Insecticides are chemicals agents used to kill insects to increase crop growth. But they can be toxic to humans and wildlife. Movento is an insecticide which is highly toxic to humans and animals by oral, dermal, and inhalation routes. This research is to assess the pulmonary impacts of this insecticide, which have not been explored in previous research. Wistar rats were adopted to four groups. 1- Control (CTL), 2- Movento (M), 3- M in conjunction with Basal medium (BM), 4- M in conjunction with Conditioned medium (CM). For evaluation of the degree of injury and fibrosis, the Hematoxylin and E

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potential of scorpion venom in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Scorpion venom contains a variety of neurotoxins which interact with ion channels and affect their activities. The present study was designed to evaluate the potential of scorpion venom as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor by using Aedes aegypti as model organism. Venoms of two species, Hottentota tamulus (Fabricus, 1798) and Androctonus finitimus (Pocock, 1897) were selected for this study. Two peptides (36 kDa from H. tamulus and 54 kDa from A. finitimus) were separated from scorpion venom by using HPLC. Selected peptides caused significantly higher mortality in larvae and adults of Aede

Evaluation of Culex quinquefasciatus wings asymmetry after exposure of larvae to sublethal concentration of ivermectin.

The surviving insects submitted to chemical control have morphological alterations that impact on their mechanisms of resistance and their final development. Those changes are detected and measured using physical features related to symmetry, specifically named fluctuating asymmetry. This is detected when deviations from the perfect bilateral symmetry for specific morphological characteristic is influenced by genetics or environmental stress. Thus, in this paper we analyze the wing in adult of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera - Culicidae) after larvae exposure to ivermectin LC50. Three hundred

Biological control of Anopheles darlingi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae using shrimps.

Mosquitoes can act as vectors of important diseases such as malaria, dengue, Zika virus, yellow fever, Chikungunya and Mayaro fever, in addition to filariasis. The use of insecticides, larvicides, bed nets and repellents, besides the use of drugs as chemoprevention and the treatment of the sick are currently the pillars of the control of these vectors. We studied the biological control against of Anopheles darlingi, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae using shrimps of the species M. pantanalense, M. amazonicum, M. brasiliense and M. jelskii. Larvae of mosquitoes were collected from

Bugging forecast: unknown, disliked, occasionally intimate. Bed bugs in Germany meet unprepared people.

Bed bugs appear to be feared more than vector insects and other household pests. The reasons for this exaggerated fear are not fully understood. One hypothesis is that the folk knowledge on recognising and controlling bed bugs decreased as bed bugs became rarer in the 1960s and led to irrational perceptions. Here, we examine people's ability to recognise a bed bug and their response what to do in case of an infestation. We found that 13% of a sample of 391 people in four large German cities recognised a bed bug; 15% of all respondents would call a pest controller in case of bed bug infestation

Future challenges for parasitology: vector control and 'One health' in Europe: the veterinary medicinal view on CVBDs such as tick borreliosis, rickettsiosis and canine leishmaniosis.

The medical as well as the veterinary importance of parasitic arthropods or ectoparasites in general terms, is characterized by the primary or secondary impact on the health of humans and companion animals alike. The parasitic arthropods addressed here are those ectoparasites belong to the class of insects, such as fleas and sand flies, or the subclass of acarids, such as ticks. These parasitic arthropods interact intensively with their hosts by blood feeding. Fleas, sand flies and ticks hold the vector capacity to transmit pathogens such as virus, bacteria or protozoa to cats, dogs and humans

Discovery of A Safe and Effective Hemipteran Insecticide: α6 nAChR-Targeting Non-Mesoionic Scaffold.

Triflumezopyrim, a mesoionic insecticide targeting nAChRs, effectively controls resistant hemipteran pests like planthoppers but raises concerns over non-target toxicity, especially to honeybees. In this study, we identified compound Q1, a pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-2,4-dione derivative, which exhibits slightly superior insecticidal activity against hemipteran pests compared to triflumezopyrim, with an LC50 value of 2.83 mg/L against Acyrthosiphon pisum, whereas triflumezopyrim shows an LC50 of 2.92 mg/L. Multi-omics integrated analysis confirmed that α6 serves as a key regulatory hub for maintai

Stability and structure-preserving numerical analysis of a stochastic delayed pine wilt disease model.

Pine wilt disease is a destructive forest disease involving pine trees, pinewood nematodes, and insect vectors. This study develops deterministic and stochastic delayed host-vector models to examine waiting periods and variability in transmission. For the deterministic system, positivity, boundedness, equilibria, and the basic reproduction number R0 are established. The disease-free equilibrium is locally and globally asymptotically stable when R0<1, while the endemic equilibrium is assessed through delay-dependent local stability. The stochastic model includes multiplicative environmental noi

Identification and functional analysis of the Y-chromosome spermless in male reproduction of Bactrocera dorsalis.

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) represents a highly promising strategy for controlling medical and agricultural pests, and its success largely hinges on selecting an appropriate target gene. The Y chromosome, which contains crucial regulatory elements governing male sex determination and development, presents a potential source of such targets. However, its repetitive structures complicate the identification of Y-chromosome genes. The chromosome quotient (CQ)-based method has proven effective for identifying Y-chromosome genes, including those with a high degree of repetition.

[Application of eco - immunology in parasitology and parasitic diseases research: a review].

As an emerging interdisciplinary field bridging ecology and immunology, eco-immunology focuses on the co-evolutionary dynamics between hosts and parasites within natural environments, and aims to unravel the ecological mechanisms underlying the formation of host immune strategies, so as to provide new insights into parasitology and parasitic diseases research. Based on case studies of diverse host-parasite systems, including insects-protozoans, fish-cestodes, amphibians-nematodes, reptiles-arthropods, birds-ectoparasites, and mammals-helminths, this review summarizes critical eco-immunological

History and future perspectives of male aesthetic genital surgery.

Since ancient times, men have tried to change the size and shape of their genitals. Bites from insects or poisonous snakes and weights were among the first methods used for this purpose. In the first half of the 1900s, the scientific push regarding male genital aesthetic surgery began. Scrotoplasty, penile suspensory ligament release, injection of hyaluronic acid as filler, use of several types of grafts, lipofilling, and liposuction are techniques currently used. The Penuma® implant has recently been described with promising results. We are living in the era of tailored surgery and regenerati

Gut Dysbiosis Has the Potential to Reduce the Sexual Attractiveness of Mouse Female.

Increasing evidence has shown that the gut microbiome has significant effects on mate preferences of insects; however, whether gut microbiota composition affects sexual attractiveness and mate preference in mammals remains largely unknown. Here, we showed that antibiotic treatment significantly restructured the gut microbiota composition of both mouse males and females. Males, regardless of antibiotic treatment, exhibited a higher propensity to interact with the control females than the antibiotic-treated females. The data clearly showed that gut microbiota dysbiosis reduced the sexual attract

Chemical Ecology and Olfaction in Short-Horned Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Chemoreception plays a crucial role in the reproduction and survival of insects, which often rely on their sense of smell and taste to find partners, suitable habitats, and food sources, and to avoid predators and noxious substances. There is a substantial body of work investigating the chemoreception and chemical ecology of Diptera (flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies); but less is known about the Orthoptera (grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, and wēta). Within the Orthoptera, the family Acrididae contains about 6700 species of short-horned grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are fascinating o

Detection of Mayaro virus in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes circulating in Goiânia-Goiás-Brazil.

The Arboviral diseases are caused by arthropod-borne viruses, such as Mayaro virus (MAYV), the etiological agent of Mayaro fever. This disease has been drawing the attention of the public health authorities for the increased number of cases likely due to virus adaptation for survival to urban areas as well as infection and multiplication in other vectors insects. Therefore, this work aimed to identify the MAYV infecting Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Goiânia, the capital of state of Goiás, Brazil. For the development of study, the larvae of A. aegypti were collected in Basic Health Units from dif

Synthesis and characterization of barbarin, a possible source of unexplained aminorex identifications in forensic science.

Aminorex is a US DEA Schedule 1 controlled substance occasionally detected in racing horses. A number of aminorex identifications in sport horses were thought to have been caused by exposure to plant sources of aminorex. Glucobarbarin, found in plants of the Brassicaceae family, has been suggested as a potential proximate chemical source by being metabolized in the plant or the horse to aminorex. In Brassicaceae, glucobarbarin is hydrolyzed by myrosinase to yield barbarin, which serves as an insect repellant and/or attractant and is structurally related to aminorex. The synthesis, purification

The Effect of West Nile Virus Infection on the Midgut Gene Expression of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae).

The interaction of the mosquito and the invading virus is complex and can result in physiological and gene expression alterations in the insect. The association of West Nile virus (WNV) and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus mosquitoes results in measurable changes in gene expression; 22 gene products were shown previously to have altered expression. Sequence analysis of one product, CQ G1A1, revealed 100% amino acid identity to gram negative bacteria binding proteins (CPQGBP) in Cx. p. quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti (70%) and Anopheles gambiae (63%) that function in pathogen recognition. CQ G1A1

Hedgehog signaling regulates imaginal cell differentiation in a basally branching holometabolous insect.

The evolution of imaginal cells, or stem cell-like cells, contributed to the spectacular diversification of holometabolous insects, which undergo complete metamorphosis. The proliferation and differentiation of these imaginal cells is under the control of juvenile hormone (JH), but which patterning genes respond to JH is currently unknown. Here, the role of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling in the development of imaginal cells was investigated. RNA interference-mediated knockdown of the components of the Hh signaling pathway showed that Hh is required for the proliferation of polymorphic and imaginal ce
