Nasal congestion and nasal obstruction: An unusual presentation of renal cell carcinoma.

Renal cell cancer (RCC) is among the 10 most common cancers affecting both genders in the United States. Advanced RCC often remains clinically silent for much of its natural history. This can make the diagnosis challenging, especially when presenting symptoms arise from a metastasis. Sinonasal malignancies are rare, accounting for <1% of all malignant tumors and 3% of malignant tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract. RCC is the most common infraclavicular malignant primary tumor that metastasizes to the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, followed by breast and lung. We describe a case of a 59

Alternative Method for Full Oral Rehabilitation in Patients with Pycnodysostosis Syndrome: A Case Report.

Pycnodysostosis (PYCD) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia arising from a change in the production of the cathepsin K enzyme and it is also known as Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome. The main changes in the buccal and maxillofacial region are modifications of the facial bones (leading to the loss of the mandibular angle due to micrognathia), deep palate, premature and/or delayed tooth eruption, hypopneumatization of the maxillary sinuses, chin hypoplasia, hypercementosis, enamel hypoplasia, hyperdontia, incomplete dentin calcification, root hypoplasia, pulp chamber obliteration, and increa

An absence of cilia outer microtubules, an etiology not previously recognized in bilateral mucocele.

Most paranasal sinus mucoceles are unilateral and affect one or at most two contiguous sinuses. We describe the case of a 44-year-old woman with bilateral maxillary sinus mucoceles who presented clinically with left malar pain, right-sided swelling, and proptosis of the right eye. The diagnostic workup included computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, because of the atypical bilateral presentation, we analyzed mucosal sinonasal tissue samples by electron microscopy. Microscopic analysis revealed an absence of one of the microtubule doublets in three of the outer doublet

Ochroconis humicola coexisting with esthesioneuroblastoma: an incidental coloniser or allergen?

Ochroconis humicola, a fish pathogen, is rarely reported to cause disease in human. We report its first isolation from nasal tissue of a human immunodeficiency virus-positive young female patient. Histopathologically, the nasal mass was diagnosed as esthesioneuroblastoma. She presented with right-sided nasal obstruction and bleeding for two and half months. Computed tomography scan showed the nasal mass filling the whole right nasal cavity, maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. The direct microscopy of the nasal tissue and mucin demonstrated the presence of septate hyphae. On culture, O. hu

Sentinel lymph node - work hypothesis in sinonasal carcinoma treatment.

Although rare, sinonasal malignancies (SNM) can be lesions of immense importance. Approximately 60-70% of sinonasal malignancies (SNM) occur in the maxillary sinus and 20-30% occurs in the nasal cavity itself. The lymphatic drainage of the sinuses and nasal cavity include levels I-III as well as the parapharyngian nodes. Elective regional lymph node dissections became controversial because of overtreatment of the many patients without lymph node metastases. Lymphatic metastasis is the most important mechanism of spread in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma considering the vast network of vessel

Exophthalmus secondary to a sinonasal cyst in a horse.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old female Miniature Horse was evaluated for progressive unilateral exophthalmia of the left globe of 3 weeks' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Results of a physical examination were unremarkable. Ophthalmic examination identified exophthalmus of the left globe with complete resistance to retropulsion and mild blepharoconjunctivitis. Computed tomography revealed a large, space-occupying mass within the left caudal maxillary and left conchofrontal sinuses. The mass extended into the left retrobulbar space and contacted the cribriform plate. Trephination yielded copious

A case of intranasal schwannoma with bilateral nasal polyposis.

Schwannoma is a benign neoplasm originating from schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath, and its occurrence in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is rare. We present a case of nasal schwannoma originating from the left nasal cavity, accompanied by bilateral nasal polyposis. A 66-year-old man presented with complaints of progressive left nasal obstruction, hyposmia, and headache. Anterior rhinoscopic and endoscopic examinations revealed a mass that almost completely filled the left nasal cavity. A polypoid mass was present in the right nasal cavity, as well. On computed tomography, th

[Unusual metastasis of hypernephroma in the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: Metastases of infraclavicular malignancies to the nose and paranasal sinuses are characterized by their untypical symptoms and late clinical manifestation. Metastases of renal carcinoma on paranasal cavities may be highly vasculared and can cause profuse bleeding. PATIENT: We report a rare case of a 60-year-old man who suffered from a large metastatic hypernephroma to the right maxillary sinus. Intermittent epistaxis and pain were the first symptoms. The patient had undergone a tumor nephrectomy six months previously. The endonasal biopsy of the vascular tumor caused abundant blee

Respiratory scleroma: a clinicopathologic and ultrastructural study.

Respiratory scleroma (rhinoscleroma) is a chronic granulomatous infection produced by Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis, a gram-negative aerobic coccobacillus. This disease is endemic to Africa, Central and South America, South Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and China. Sporadic cases have been reported in the United States, especially in persons who migrated from the aforementioned areas. The majority of cases affect the nose, but extension to the soft and hard palate, upper lip, and maxillary sinuses also is frequent. This study comprises 11 patients (6 females and 5 males) with respi

[Decrease in general health status, febrile state and sinusitis in renal insufficiency].

UNLABELLED: A 59-year old man, dialysed for 9 years because of chronic renal failure of unknown etiology, was also suffering from a hypertensive cardiopathy and anemia. He has received more than 70 units of blood over the past few years. An elevated blood aluminium level prompted treatment with desferrioxamine for 3 years. Following episodes of melena, an intestinal-wall lesion, located 8 cm above the ileo-caecal valve was discovered. Blood serotonin levels were elevated; biopsy of the liver revealed tumor cells with round-shaped nuclei which stained positive for synaptophysin, findings compat

Chronic Sinonasal Mucocele Manifesting as a Distinctive Collapsed Fibrous Hyalinized Cyst Wall.

Chronic sinonasal mucoceles are benign expansile lesions caused by obstruction of sinus drainage, resulting in mucus accumulation and potential complications including nasal obstruction, facial pain, and visual disturbances. While their clinical aspects are well-characterized, detailed histopathologic descriptions remain limited. We conducted a retrospective clinicopathologic analysis of six patients treated for chronic sinonasal mucoceles between 2014 and 2024. Clinical data, imaging studies (computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)), endoscopic findings, and histopatholo

Office surgery for paranasal sinus recirculation.

BACKGROUND: Circular flow of mucus between adjacent openings of a single paranasal sinus is known as recirculation, and can cause persistent sinonasal symptoms. Removing the bridging tissues allows the surgical ostium to connect to the natural ostium. This procedure prevents the circular flow between the 2 ostia, and allows the mucociliary system to provide for physiologic drainage of the sinuses. Traditionally this has taken place in the operating room; however, performing this procedure in the office is possible, even when there is significant intervening bone. Here we report a series patien

The manifestation of cocaine-induced midline destructive lesion in bone tissue and its identification in human skeletal remains.

Cocaine-induced midline destructive lesion (CIMDL) is a condition that may arise in response to chronic insufflation ("snorting") of cocaine. It is clinically diagnosed when the nasal septum, lateral nasal walls, and/or hard palate show signs of destruction in association with cocaine use. Although its true incidence is unknown, CIMDL is not an uncommon clinical finding amongst intranasal cocaine abusers and is likely to be encountered by forensic anthropologists and medical examiners working worldwide. Given the preponderance of drug abusers amongst the subjects of forensic casework, the abil
