A psychobiological perspective on working memory performance at 8 months of age.

Fifty 8-month-old infants participated in a study of the interrelations among cognition, temperament, and electrophysiology. Better performance on a working memory task (assessed using a looking version of the A-not-B task) was associated with increases in frontal-parietal EEG coherence from baseline to task, as well as elevated levels of frontal-occipital coherence during both baseline and task. Enhanced performance was also associated with decreased heart period (increased heart rate) from baseline to task. Infants with better working memory performance had parents who rated them high on act

Emotional responses associated with self-face processing in individuals with autism spectrum disorders: an fMRI study.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show impaired emotional responses to self-face processing, but the underlying neural bases are unclear. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated brain activity when 15 individuals with high-functioning ASD and 15 controls rated the photogenicity of self-face images and photographs of others' faces. Controls showed a strong correlation between photogenicity ratings and extent of embarrassment evoked by self-face images; this correlation was weaker among ASD individuals, indicating a decoupling between the cognitive evaluation

The neural correlates of performance in adolescents at risk for schizophrenia: inefficiently increased cortico-striatal responses measured with fMRI.

BACKGROUND: fMRI studies indicate that schizophrenia patients and their adult relatives require greater prefrontal activation to maintain performance at levels equal to controls, but studies have not established if this pattern of inefficiency is observed in child and adolescent offspring of schizophrenia patients (SCZ-Off). METHODS: Using a task with visual working memory demands, we investigated activation in cortico-striatal networks and dorsal prefrontal modulation of regions underlying visual working memory in a group of SCZ-Off (n = 19) and controls with no family history of psychosis (

A network approach to assessing cognition in disorders of consciousness.

OBJECTIVE: Conventional assessments of consciousness rely on motor responses to indicate awareness. However, overt behaviors may be absent or ambiguous in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) resulting in underrating capacity for cognition. fMRI during a silent picture-naming task was evaluated as an indicator of command following when conventional methods are not sufficient. METHODS: A total of 10 patients with and without conventional evidence of awareness, who met diagnostic criteria for the minimally conscious state (MCS) (n = 5), vegetative state (VS) (n = 3), emerged from MCS

Hippocampal function in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus plays a central role in memory formation. There is considerable evidence of abnormalities in hippocampal structure and function in schizophrenia, which may differentiate it from bipolar disorder. However, no previous studies have compared hippocampal activation in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder directly. METHOD: Fifteen patients with schizophrenia, 14 patients with bipolar disorder and 14 healthy comparison subjects took part in the study. Subjects performed a face-name pair memory task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Differences in blood o

Neuroimaging differences in spatial cognition between men and male-to-female transsexuals before and during hormone therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychological abnormalities in transsexual patients have been reported in comparison with subjects without gender identity disorder (GID), suggesting differences in underlying neurobiological processes. However, these results have not consistently been confirmed. Furthermore, studies on cognitive effects of cross-sex hormone therapy also yield heterogeneous results. AIM: We hypothesized that untreated transsexual patients differ from men without GID in activation pattern associated with a mental rotation task and that these differences may further increase after commencing

P3 components of the event-related potential and marijuana dependence in Southwest California Indians.

Native Americans have some of the highest rates of marijuana use and abuse, yet neurobiological measures associated with addiction to marijuana in this population remain unknown. The present investigation evaluated associations between the P350 and P450 components of the event-related potential (ERP) elicited by affective stimuli, and marijuana dependence in a population of Southwest California (SWC) Indian adults. Three hundred and seventeen participants with a mean age of 30 years who were free of major Axis I and psychiatric diagnoses and antisocial personality disorder were categorized as:

Residual cognitive impairments in remitted depressed patients.

Depressive disorders are associated with various cognitive impairments. Studies on whether or not these impairments persist into the euthymic phase have shown conflicting results, due to differences in test versions and in study samples. In this paper, we aimed to compare the cognitive performance of remitted depressed patients with that of age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers across a wide range of cognitive domains. In two studies, we found few differences on neutral as well as emotional information processing tests. The findings indicate that remitted depressed patients who use antide

Is a lack of disgust something to fear? A functional magnetic resonance imaging facial emotion recognition study in euthymic bipolar disorder patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the neural responses invoked in the recognition of facial fear and disgust in euthymic bipolar patients as compared with healthy subjects. METHODS: This study examined 10 female euthymic bipolar patients, and 10 suitably matched healthy subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects were engaged in an explicit facial emotion recognition task involving fear, disgust and neutral expressions. The activation paradigm involved nominating the facial expression using specified response keys. Behavioural data were collected and analysed and both wi

Hemispheric asymmetries in the perceptual representations of words.

The representation of words in sentences can involve the activation and integration of perceptual information. For example, readers who are asked to view pictures of objects relating to a word in a sentence are influenced by perceptual information in the sentence context-readers are faster to respond to a picture of a whole apple after reading, "There is an apple in the bag," than after reading, "There is an apple in the salad." The purpose of this study was to examine how the two cerebral hemispheres use perceptual information about words as a function of sentence context. Patients who had da

Consolidation of object-discrimination memory is independent of the hippocampus in rats.

We examined whether retrograde amnesia would be more likely for object discriminations learned an hour before hippocampal damage than object discriminations learned days before. Specifically, rats were trained on two object-discrimination problems 72 h before surgery and another discrimination problem and the reversal of one of the previously learned problems 1 h before surgery. Importantly, novel procedures that minimized overtraining on the object discriminations were used to increase the possibility of the lesions causing amnesia. After either receiving sham or neurotoxic-induced hippocampa

Determining significant connectivity by 4D spatiotemporal wavelet packet resampling of functional neuroimaging data.

An active area of neuroimaging research involves examining functional relationships between spatially remote brain regions. When determining whether two brain regions exhibit significant correlation due to true functional connectivity, one must account for the background spatial correlation inherent in neuroimaging data. We define background correlation as spatiotemporal correlation in the data caused by factors other than neurophysiologically based functional associations such as scanner induced correlations and image preprocessing. We develop a 4D spatiotemporal wavelet packet resampling met

A variant C178T in the regulatory region of the serotonin receptor gene HTR3A modulates neural activation in the human amygdala.

Converging evidence in neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies has suggested that the limbic and prefrontal systems play important roles in emotion and cognition. These structures are activated when we see a human face, assuming that we automatically evaluate the biological significance of the stimuli. The serotonin (5-HT) system within the brain has been tied to various behaviors such as mood and anxiety and to the biology of neuropsychiatric disorders. To investigate the link between the 5-HT system and limbic/prefrontal activity, normal subjects (n = 26) who underwent functional magneti

Transient memory impairment after acute dose of 75mg 3.4-Methylene-dioxymethamphetamine.

A range of studies has indicated that users of 3.4-Methylene-dioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'Ecstasy') display cognitive deficits, particularly memory impairment, as compared to non-drug using controls. Yet it is difficult to determine whether these deficits are caused by MDMA or some other confounding factor, such as polydrug use. The present study was designed to establish the direct relation between MDMA and memory impairment under placebo-controlled conditions. Eighteen recreational MDMA users participated in a double blind, placebo controlled, 3-way crossover design. They were treated with p

[Functional neuroanatomy of emotions].

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, functional neuroanatomy of the frontal lobe and limbic system could be uncovered as emotion processing neural substrates. fMRI was used to test the influence of induced emotions on a non-affective, attention-demanding, cognitive task. METHOD: 6 Psychopaths versus 7 controls were analyzed by fMRI with a simon-paradigm after emotion induction. RESULTS: Emotion induction differentially influenced cortical activation patterns in emotion related brain areas like the amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex. CONCLUSION: Structural-morphological neural areas of em

An experiment of nature: brain anatomy parallels cognition and behavior in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurogenetic-neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a highly variable and enigmatic profile of cognitive and behavioral features. Relative to overall intellect, affected individuals demonstrate disproportionately severe visual-spatial deficits and enhanced emotionality and face processing. In this study, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 43 individuals with WS and 40 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Given the distinct cognitive-behavioral dissociations associated with this disorder, we hypothesized that neuroanatomica

Recall of overlearned speech in noise: Developmental ERP findings and an episodic buffer frame for culturally situated brain activity.

How does extensively practiced speech memory remain dependent on momentary sensory input, and how does this interaction shape brain activity during development? This perspective integrates exploratory behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) findings from a culturally situated spoken-sequence recognition paradigm with a working memory episodic-buffer account. We reanalyzed data from children and young adults who had memorized Quranic passages despite limited Arabic comprehension. Participants heard incomplete passages with or without static noise and selected the missing final word from ph

Altered beta-band functional connectivity may be related to 'performance slowing' in good outcome aneurysmal subarachnoid patients.

Recent evidence suggests that good neurological outcome in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) does not equate to good neuropsychological and cognitive outcome. These individuals continue to face cognitive difficulties in tasks involving mental flexibility, short-term memory and attention, resulting in decreased independence in daily living and reduced ability to return to work. In the current study, we examined the functional connectivity profiles using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in SAH patients, versus controls, during a visual short-term memory, 1-back, task. Our results found that a global mea
