Home Visits by Mother-Child Nurses to Concerned Mothers and Infants in Japan: Characteristics of Mothers and Infants Who Receive Continued Support.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, postnatal care is delivered through follow-up home visits conducted by mother-child nurses in the community employed by local governments. During these visits, the nurses are responsible for promptly assessing the family's circumstances and mother's mental health and determining appropriate directions for ongoing support. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of mothers and children assessed by mother-child nurses in the community as needing ongoing support. METHODS: In this qualitative study, participants were enrolled through convenience sampling. In total,

Obstetric, perineal, and psychosocial outcomes after successful vaginismus treatment: a retrospective cohort study stratified by Lamont grade.

BACKGROUND: Whether obstetric, perineal, and psychosocial differences persist after successful vaginismus treatment, particularly by pre-treatment severity, remains unclear. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, primigravid women who conceived spontaneously after successful vaginismus treatment and delivered between December 2023 and December 2025 (n = 117) were compared with controls selected at a 1:3 ratio for similar maternal age, body mass index, and gestational age at delivery (n = 351). Pre-treatment severity was graded by Lamont (1–4). Outcomes included cesarean del

The Breastfeeding Experiences of Mother-Infant Dyads and the Effects of an FMR1 Mutation.

This study examined the early breastfeeding experiences of mothers with an FMR1 premutation (FXPM) and their infants with and without fragile X syndrome (FXS) to identify early feeding needs and potential opportunities for intervention. Data collection occurred through a retrospective national survey that captured data on breastfeeding experiences and co-occurring conditions of mother and child. Participants were 246 mothers with an FXPM. Of their 384 infants, 287 had FXS and 97 were unaffected (i.e., they did not have FXS or an FXPM). Unaffected infants had a longer breastfeeding duration rel

High rates of maternal depression amongst Syrian refugees in Lebanon - a pilot study.

This pilot study compares symptoms of depression and risk factors amongst Syrian refugees and low-income Lebanese mothers accessing a primary care centre in Beirut between January and June 2018. Women who gave birth in the previous two years or who were currently pregnant were included in the study. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Arabic Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Correlations between EPDS score and sociodemographic and mental health variables were analysed using Pearson's coefficient and ANOVA. 35 Syrian and 25 Lebanese women were recruited, 15 of whom were pregn

Maternal depression and child development: Evidence from São Paulo's Western Region Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION:: While a growing body of evidence has investigated the relationship between maternal mental health and child development, evidence on children's early life outcomes remains mixed. We analyze the empirical relationship between maternal depression and children's development at age one using data from the São Paulo Western Region Cohort project. METHOD:: Seven hundred and ninety-eight (798) mother-child dyads living in the Butantã-Jaguaré' region of São Paulo were assessed through a home visit between January and March 2015. Maternal mental health was assessed using the Edinburgh P

[Can men be included in the population subjected to puerperal psychosis? A case report].

INTRODUCTION: Puerperal psychosis (PP) is a psychiatric disorder that occurs in 1 out of 1000 pregnancies. Well known since antiquity, its symptoms have often been described in mothers, but few studies have successfully investigated a related disorder in fathers. The characteristic of this pathology is more related to its appearance than to its semiological description which is why its nosographic place is always discussed. The objective here is to focus on the definition of PP and to suggest an entity for both genders. CASE REPORT: Our case report focused on the clinical description of an ei

Effect of a food supplementation and psychosocial stimulation trial for severely malnourished children on the level of maternal depressive symptoms in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is associated with poor child development and growth in low-income countries. This paper evaluates the effect of a community-based trial providing psychosocial stimulation and food supplements to severely malnourished children on maternal depressive symptoms in Bangladesh. METHODS: Severely underweight (weight-for-age Z-score < -3) hospitalized children aged 6-24 months (n = 507), were randomly assigned to: psychosocial stimulation (PS), food supplementation (FS), PS+FS, clinic control (CC) and hospital control (CH) at discharge. PS included play sessions with

Using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale with learning disabled mothers.

Accurate identification of postnatal depression in mothers with a learning disability is essential if they are to be offered appropriate treatment and support. However, health visitors have raised concerns about the usefulness of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) with this group of women. In this small-scale study, mothers with a learning disability were asked to complete an EPDS and take part in a structured interview, which was designed to be more appropriate to their level of intellectual ability. The number of symptoms they described was compared with those observed by a sign

"Mad for Fitness": an exercise group to combat a high incidence of postnatal depression.

Health visitors working in a socially and economically deprived area of the Wirral, Merseyside wanted to find innovative ways to address the high incidence of postnatal depression in their caseloads. Believing that exercise may have a beneficial effect on depression, they set up a project to make fitness activities more affordable and available to their client base. After an initial survey of local mothers had indicated support, a pilot "swim, gym and crèche" scheme was set up in a Leisure Centre in partnership with other agencies. The response from the pilot group was positive and suggested t

Benefits and risks to mother and infant of drug treatment for postnatal depression.

The postnatal period presents a special problem to healthcare providers treating psychiatric disorders in women. Many new mothers who need antidepressant treatment may wish to breastfeed their infants, but are hesitant to do so for fear of passing on possible harmful effects of the medication through their milk. The focus of this article will be on highlighting and interpreting the existing literature on the benefits and risks to mother and infant of drug treatment for postnatal depression, as well as outlining treatment guidelines for the use of antidepressants in breastfeeding mothers. The a

Transdermal oestrogen for treatment of severe postnatal depression.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression can have long-term adverse consequences for the mother, for the marital relationship, and for the infant's psychological development. Such depressions can be severe and resistant to both support and counselling and to therapy with antidepressant drugs. We investigated the antidepressant efficacy of oestrogen given transdermally. METHODS: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 61 women with major depression, which began within 3 months of childbirth and persisted for up to 18 months postnatally, were allocated randomly active treatment (n=34; 3 months of

Impact of Intraoperative Infusion and Postoperative PCIA of Dexmedetomidine on Early Breastfeeding After Elective Cesarean Section: A Randomized Double-Blind Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated the effects of dexmedetomidine (DEX) on breastfeeding after cesarean delivery. A randomized double-blind controlled trial was conducted to investigate whether the administration of DEX, immediately after delivery and for patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA), can be beneficial for breastfeeding. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred sixty parturients scheduled for elective cesarean section under spinal anesthesia were randomly allocated to the DEX group (a loading dose of DEX was pumped at 0.5 μg/kg within 10 min, followed by a further infusion o

Mental health consequences of violence against women and girls.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent studies on mental health consequences of violence against women and girls were reviewed in a range of situations. RECENT FINDINGS: Although several studies continued to show cross-sectional associations between child sexual abuse (CSA) and mental health outcomes, a few prospective studies showed a robust association between CSA and depression. Studies on the impact of dating violence are still at a nascent stage and focus on antecedents of violence rather than its consequences. Women at higher risk, such as adolescents, migrants, the homeless, and women in the perina

Maternal neonaticide following traumatic childbirth: a case study.

Recent work has documented the relatively high incidence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms in women during the birth delivery process and afterwards, even in uncomplicated births. This phenomenon, however, has yet to be linked with cases of neonaticide (child homicide in the first 24 hr of life) or infanticide (child homicide within the 1st year of life). Women are more likely to experience mental disorder after childbirth than at any other time in their lives, and the intentional killing of an offspring by a mentally ill mother is likely underreported. The immediate postpartum

Manifest psychosis in neurosyphilis.

INTRODUCTION: Recent surveys have assessed a remarkable increase in the prevalence of infectious syphilis. If left untreated, 30% of patients may develop tertiary syphilis, which can manifest as neurosyphilis. CASE REPORT: The authors present a case of an acute psychosis during and after pregnancy in a 37-year-old woman, which was identified as a manifestation of neurosyphilis after admission to a psychiatric ward. The positive screening test for syphilis provided the first hint of syphilis and gave direction for further diagnosis and specific treatment. Subsequently, the patient was treated

Proposed Solutions for Improving Maternal Health Care in Rural America.

Increasing hospital and labor & delivery (L&D) closures have led to declining access to hospital obstetric care in rural areas across the country. These closures increase the burden on women and families living in rural communities, who often must drive long distances for prenatal visits and delivery. The lack of maternal health care in rural America can also result in several adverse maternal and infant outcomes including premature birth, low birth weight, out of hospital births, maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, and increased risk of postpartum depression. The reasons for these cl

Reproduction and offspring status 18 years after teenage-onset anorexia nervosa--a controlled community-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To study reproduction in a representative group of anorexia nervosa (AN) cases. METHOD: Fifty-one adolescent-onset AN cases (48 women; three men), originally recruited after community screening, and 51 matched comparison cases (COMP) were interviewed 18 years after AN onset at a mean age of 32 years, regarding pregnancies and early development of the children. RESULTS: The results of the 48 AN and 48 COMP group women are reported in the present study. Six women still had an eating disorder (ED), none of whom had become a mother. Twenty-seven women in the AN group and 31 women in t

Cesarean Delivery: From Surgical Procedure to System of Care.

Cesarean delivery has evolved from an operation of last resort to the most frequently performed major surgical procedure worldwide, with nearly 29 million births each year. Advances in anesthesia, surgical technique, and perioperative care have greatly improved safety, yet the expansion of cesarean delivery raises complex clinical, psychological, and societal questions. This article introduces the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) supplement "Cesarean Delivery", which assembles expert reviews, clinical opinions, original research, clinical trials, and perspectives addressing

A Compassion-Focused Approach to Support Parents After Preterm Birth.

Preterm birth remains a global health challenge with significant implications for neonatal outcomes and parental mental health. This paper explores the complex psychological experiences and intrapersonal processes of parents after preterm birth, highlighting their heightened risk for mental health difficulties such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Existing mental health interventions are medicalised, primarily focusing on infant care. As a result, there is currently a lack of emotionally-focused interventions aimed at supporting parents after preter
