Construction and validation of a nomogram prediction model for the catheter-related thrombosis risk of central venous access devices in patients with cancer: a prospective machine learning study.

Central venous access devices (CVADs) are integral to cancer treatment. However, catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) poses a considerable risk to patient safety. It interrupts treatment; delays therapy; prolongs hospitalisation; and increases the physical, psychological and financial burden of patients. Our study aims to construct and validate a predictive model for CRT risk in patients with cancer. It offers the possibility to identify independent risk factors for CRT and prevent CRT in patients with cancer. We prospectively followed patients with cancer and CVAD at Xiangya Hospital of Central

Critical Fluctuations as an Early Warning Signal of Sports Injuries? A Proof of Concept Using Football Monitoring Data.

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing interest in the development and prevention of sports injuries from a complex dynamic systems perspective. From this perspective, injuries may occur following critical fluctuations in the psychophysiological state of an athlete. Our objective was to quantify these so-called Early Warning Signals (EWS) as a proof of concept to determine their explanatory performance for injuries. The sample consisted of 23 professional youth football (soccer) players. Self-reports of psychological and physiological factors as well as data from heart rate and GPS sensors w

Developmental Coordination Disorder, An Umbrella Term for Motor Impairments in Children: Nature and Co-Morbid Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) defines a heterogeneous class of children exhibiting marked impairment in motor coordination as a general group of deficits in fine and gross motricity (subtype mixed group) common to all research studies, and with a variety of other motor disorders that have been little investigated. No consensus about symptoms and etiology has been established. METHODS: Data from 58 children aged 6 to 13 years with DCD were collected on DSM-IV criteria, similar to DSM-5 criteria. They had no other medical condition and inclusion criteria were strict (bor

Development of Danish version of child oral-health-related quality of life questionnaires (CPQ8-10 and CPQ11-14).

BACKGROUND: The Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) is a self-reported questionnaire developed to measure oral health-related quality of life in children. The CPQ aims to improve the description of children's oral health, while taking into consideration the importance of psychological aspects in the concept of health. The CPQ exists in two versions: the CPQ8-10 for children aged 8-10 years and the CPQ11-14 for those aged 11-14 years. The aim of this study was to develop a Danish version of the CPQ8-10 and the CPQ11-14 and to evaluate its validity for use among Danish-speaking children. METH

Noise, noise sensitivity and psychiatric disorder: epidemiological and psychophysiological studies.

Noise, a prototypical environmental stressor, has clear health effects in causing hearing loss but other health effects are less evident. Noise exposure may lead to minor emotional symptoms but the evidence of elevated levels of aircraft noise leading to psychiatric hospital admissions and psychiatric disorder in the community is contradictory. Despite this there are well documented associations between noise exposure and changes in performance, sleep disturbance and emotional reactions such as annoyance. Moreover, annoyance is associated with both environmental noise level and psychological a

A critical review of EMG-controlled electrical stimulation in paraplegics.

This review presents a description and provides a comparative performance evaluation of EMG control vs. other approaches to controlling functional electrical stimulation (FES) in upper-motor-neuron paraplegics to provide them with a certain degree of walking ability with walker support. EMG control is considered in terms of a combination of above-lesion EMG control and below-lesion response-EMG control. The above-lesion EMG is to control the activation of different limb functions involved in standing up and walking via FES. This control is accomplished by analyzing raw surface EMG time-series

Preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is associated with amputation level progression in patients with diabetic foot.

BACKGROUND: Amputation-level progression after below-knee amputation (BKA) is associated with functional and psychological burden in diabetic foot disease. We evaluated the association between preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and short-term progression from BKA to above-knee amputation (AKA). METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort included 105 consecutive adults undergoing primary transtibial BKA for diabetic foot complications. The primary outcome was conversion from the index BKA to AKA within 3 months. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, disease severity, perioper

Reducing mental health stigmatisation among healthcare workers and students using a virtual reality protocol: the VIRTUS protocol, a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder, frequently associated with stigma, including within healthcare settings that significantly impairs quality of life and may exacerbate symptoms. Virtual reality (VR), as an immersive tool, may allow healthy individuals to experience the first-person perspective of a patient experiencing psychotic symptoms. VR exposure may facilitate perspective-taking, foster empathy and help reduce stigma. However, the findings remain incomplete, with considerable variation between protocols and no data on implicit stigma. Here, we present a study

Supporting adjective learning by children with Developmental Language Disorder: Enhancing metalinguistic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Adjectives are essential for communication, conceptual development and academic success. However, they are semantically and syntactically complex and can be particularly challenging for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Surprisingly, language interventions have not typically focused on this important word class. AIMS: (1) To provide a supportive and accessible primer on adjectives for practitioners; (2) to explore how the SHAPE CODINGTM system can be adapted to support adjective learning in DLD; and (3) to provide practical recommendations on how to support adje

Fear of Reinjury Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Is Manifested in Muscle Activation Patterns of Single-Leg Side-Hop Landings.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether fear of re-injury is manifested in joint kinematics and muscle activation patterns during landings of a standardized rebound side-hop (SRSH), or in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), among individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: In this cross-sectional observational study, 38 individuals within 2 years post-ACLR were grouped into HIGH-FEAR (n = 21, median 11.2 months post-surgery) or LOW-FEAR (n = 17, median 10.1 months post-surgery) based on a discriminating question (Q9; Tampa Scale of

Indefinite detention or supervision for public protection when a life sentence is not available: Pathway outcomes among prisoners in one region.

BACKGROUND: Indeterminate sentences for Public Protection (IPPs) were introduced in England and Wales under the Criminal Justice Act 2003 for offenders not eligible for a life sentence but considered to pose a serious risk to the public. In 2012, new IPPs became illegal, in part after the European Court of Human Rights ruled in three cases that failure to make appropriate provision for rehabilitation services while the men were in prison breached their rights under Article 5 of the Convention and thus from arbitrary detention. People already sentenced under this provision, however, remained in

The curability of breast cancer and the treatment of advanced disease.

Breast cancer represents a major health problem, with more than 1,000,000 new cases and 370,000 deaths yearly worldwide. In the last decade, in spite of an increasing incidence, breast cancer mortality has been declining in the majority of developed countries. This is the combined result of better education, widespread screening programmes and more efficacious adjuvant treatments. Better knowledge of breast cancer biology now allows the cosmetic, physical and psychological consequences of radical mastectomy to be spared in the majority of breast cancer patients. Use of the sentinel node techni

How Gender-Sensitive Disaster Management is Addressed in the Turkish Parliament: A Qualitative Study from Feminist Bioethics Perspective.

BACKGROUND: The devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria on February 6, 2023, caused significant destruction and loss of life, to the extent that they have been termed the "Disaster of the Century." Although women are disproportionately affected by disasters, they have historically been overlooked in disaster management. However, with the increased awareness brought about by the feminist movement regarding secondary inequalities arising from structural disparities such as gender roles and economic dependency, the concept of "gender-sensitive disaster management" has gained promine

Development of a Web-Based Experiential Learning Intervention for the Public to Reduce Cancer Stigma: Tutorial on the Application of Intervention Mapping.

BACKGROUND: Stigma may negatively impact individuals throughout the continuum of cancer care and survivorship. Multitheory and multilevel intervention programs are necessary to reduce stigma but remain globally limited. OBJECTIVE: This tutorial aims to illustrate the development of a web-based experiential learning intervention, "Friend Supporter," designed for the public, which simulates scenarios to foster empathy and helping intentions. We applied the intervention mapping (IM) approach, which is rooted in the socioecological model, using the first four steps. METHODS: In step 1, key issue

Do Women and Minority Orthopaedic Residents Report Experiencing Worse Well-being and More Mistreatment Than Their Peers?

BACKGROUND: Despite the increased risk of attrition for women and minority residents during orthopaedic residency, there is currently a paucity of research examining the training environment of these residents. To address this, we examined how well-being constructs may differ for women or minority residents compared with their peers, and whether these residents report experiencing more mistreatment during residency. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) How does the psychologic wellbeing of women and minority residents compare with that of their peers regarding the constructs of burnout, lifestyle satisfac
