[Is enterolithiasis a disease occurring more frequently in desert climate? Apropos of 8 cases].

This work is a report about 8 cases of enterolithiasis treated in our University Hospital between 1980 and 1990. We emphasize the rarity of this condition. We also note its relative frequency (5 of 8 cases) in the Bedouin population of our mostly desertic area, and question the possible impact of a diet rich in goat's milk and/or of tuberculosis, which is still endemic in some tribes. We then discuss the difficulties of diagnosis and the essential contribution of small bowel radiographs. The etiologies of enterolithiasis are reviewed, as well as the various modalities of treatment.

Laparoscopic-assisted resection of long-segment small bowel duplication: a rare case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Small bowel duplication is a rare congenital gastrointestinal malformation in children that can present in various ways and often lead to misdiagnosis. Laparoscopic surgery has gradually become the preferred treatment method because of its minimal invasive advantages. In this case, we report a child with small bowel duplication who underwent resection of the duplicated bowel segment with laparoscopic assistance. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old male patient was admitted with "abdominal pain for 20 days." After admission, abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scans sugg

Mesocolic hernia, a case series.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Paraduodenal hernias are difficult to diagnose due to their unusual presentation. Herein, five new cases are added to the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Four male and one female child complained of paraduodenal hernias, two on the right side and three on the left side. The intestinal part that herniated inside the hernia sac was also malrotated in four patients. One patient had Meckel's diverticulum with a herniated intestine. One infant had extrahepatic biliary disease, a single atrium, polysplenia, intestinal malrotation, and a left paraduodenal hernia. Explorat

[Surgical management of duodenal atresia due to annular pancreas and intestinal atresia IIIb].

BACKGROUND: The presence of duodenal atresia related to type IIIb intestinal atresia is a rare association, with few cases reported in the literature, representing a surgical challenge considering that even isolated cases of type IIIb intestinal atresia are a challenge. The objective was to report the successful surgical management of a case of a complex intestinal malformation, characterized by duodenal occlusion secondary to annular pancreas and type IIIb intestinal atresia, with intestinal malrotation by definition and the presence of Meckel's diverticulum. CLINICAL CASE: We present the ca

MR Enterography in paediatric patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of Magnetic Resonance enterography (MRE) in the diagnostic work-up of children presenting with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2014 to January 2016, a single-centre prospective study was performed on all children between 0 and 16 years of age referred to the radiology department for OGIB. Each child underwent MRE examination after negative oesophagogastroduodenoscopy and ileocolonoscopy. MRE results were recorded. All patients proceeded to the related gold standard for diagnostic confirmation. RESULTS: 25 p

Intussusception caused by heterotopic gastric mucosa in small intestine: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal intussusception is the most frequent cause of small bowel obstruction in children between the ages of 2 months and 5 years and often remains idiopathic in etiology, even after surgery. On microscopic examination, in intussusception normal mucosa is noted but in a few cases heterotopic tissue can be seen. Heterotopic gastric mucosa in the small intestine is extremely rare except for its occurrence in remnants of Meckel's diverticulum. In view of the rarity of this condition, we report a case of ectopic gastric mucosa in the small intestine that was not associated with rem

Tales from previous times: important eponyms in pediatric surgery.

The use of eponyms in medicine has a long and captivating tradition, which applies to pediatric surgery as well. Unfortunately, even though these eponyms are widely used, oftentimes the fascinating personalities and lives behind these names remain unrecognized or underappreciated, especially among residents, fellows and younger-generation pediatric surgeons. Therefore, in this article, we review 15 names that are frequently used as eponyms in modern pediatric surgery and hereby enlighten the personalities behind them. Given their particular frequency, we choose the following eponyms: Ramstedt

Nonrotation of intestine: a case report.

Nonrotation of intestine is a congenital abnormality of the midgut which is due to error in the process of rotation. Errors in the 2nd and 3rd stage of rotation can lead to series of abnormalities in the form of malrotation and reversed rotation. As a consequence, the relative position of other organs likes caecum, intestine, meckel's diverticulum changes. This can lead to missing diagnosis of common clinical conditions such as appendicitis. The incidence of nonrotation is 1:500. The congenital abnormality appears to be rare as this could be an incidental abnormality. The symptoms of nonrotati

Diagnosis of obscure gastrointestinal hemorrhage with capsule endoscopy in combination with multiple-detector computed tomography.

AIM: To demonstrate the clinical efficacy of combination capsule endoscopy (CE) and multiple-detector computed tomography (MDCT) diagnostic imaging in the identification of gastrointestinal hemorrhages. METHODS: In the present study, 123 patients with gastrointestinal hemorrhages of obscure origin (GHOO) were examined with CE in combination with MDCT. The results were compared with findings of surgical pathology. RESULTS: Of the 123 patients, 57.72% (71/123) of the patients exhibited positive CE findings compared with 30.08% (37/123) on MDCT alone (P < 0.01). When used in combination, 65.85%

An easy and certain method to prevent dislodging of laparoscopic ports.

The dislodgement of a laparoscopic port during surgery is a common problem in patients with thin abdominal walls, especially children. In this paper, we report a new technique and a simple device to fix a laparoscopic port. The device consists of an O-ring and connecting threads that are tied to the ring at two points. The connecting thread is passed though the port's cannula, and a trocar is set in the cannula beforehand. The port with the inner trocar is placed into the abdominal cavity, and the trocar is removed. The ring is brought into the abdominal cavity with a laparoscopic forceps thro

Enterohepatic Helicobacter other than Helicobacter pylori.

The Helicobacter genus includes Gram negative bacteria which were originally considered to belong to the Campylobacter genus. They have been classified in a separate genus since 1989 because they have different biochemical characteristics, with more than 24 species having been identified and more still being studied.H. pylori is the best known. It has an important etiopathogenic role in peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Enterohepatic Helicobacters (EHH) other than H. pylori colonize the bowel, biliary tree and liver of animals and human beings with pathogenic potential. The difficulties

Minimally conjoined omphalopagi: a consistent spectrum of anomalies.

Omphalapagus twins constitute less than one third of all siamese twins. Most omphalopagi are attached by a skin bridge that often contains h … lies, and urachal anomalies. Intestinal connection was consistently at a point corresponding to the Meckel diverticulum site of twin B, with blood supply to the small bowel of twin A, probably via the vitelline artery. The consistent spectrum of anomalies encountered with minimally conjoined omphalopagi allows planning of separation. Caution is required to avoid over …

Menstruation Confounding the Correct Interpretation of 99m Tc-RBC Bleeding Scan.

99m Tc-RBC bleeding scan in a 17-year-old adolescent girl showed an increased focal activity in the pelvis. However, SPECT/CT showed that this activity was located in the uterus, which was considered a normal variant considering that the patient was in her fourth day of the menstrual period. Subsequent 99m TcO 4- Meckel scan showed the typical characteristic of ectopic gastric mucosa in the small bowel. Postsurgical pathology confirmed the diagnosis of ectopic gastric mucosa. This case suggested the menstrual period uterus should be included as differential diagnosis of 99m Tc-RBC scan.
