BACKGROUND: Elbow arthroplasty (EA) is an established technique for the treatment of select distal humeral fractures, yet little data exists regarding the safety and outcome of EA in the presence of an open distal humeral fracture where the risk of periprosthetic infection is an even greater concern. We hypothesized that EA does not carry an increased risk of infection or other postoperative complications when performed for simple open distal humeral fractures.
METHODS: Seventeen patients underwent total EA (n = 9) or hemiarthroplasty (n = 8) for an open distal humeral fracture. The open frac

BACKGROUND: Total elbow arthroplasty is a treatment for unreconstructable distal humerus fractures; implant longevity remains a concern, especially in younger patients. However, distal humeral hemiarthroplasty (DHH) offers an alternative with potential long-term advantages.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 10 patients who underwent DHH for distal humerus fractures over a 4-year period (2008-2012) by a single surgeon. Patients underwent testing of range of motion, Mayo Elbow Performance Scores (MEPS), Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH), visual analog scal

BACKGROUND: Recent innovative techniques have led to renewed interest in ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) repair. Although early outcome data regarding the clinical outcome of overhead athletes undergoing UCL repair with augmentation have been encouraging, long-term data are still needed to evaluate both the appropriate indications and success rate for this procedure.
PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate the acute complications seen in a large cohort of patients who underwent UCL repair with internal brace augmentation at a single institution.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.

BACKGROUND: Post-trauma elbow stiffness (PTES) is a common complication after elbow trauma that causes severe upper limb disability. Open elbow arthrolysis (OEA) with radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is an effective method to treat PTES with rotation limitation, or persistent pain/instability after radial head resection. However, no long-term results have been reported for this technique. This study aimed to show the clinical and radiographic outcomes of OEA with RHA over 8 years and compare its efficacy at 3 years (short-term).
METHODS: Patients with PTES treated by OEA with RHA between Septem

BACKGROUND: Femoral head fractures (FHF) are uncommon and generally caused by high-energy injuries. Surgical reduction with stable fixation of large fragments is believed to have the best outcomes. This retrospective study intended to report outcomes with surgical treatment at our institution and tried to establish treatment algorithm.
METHODS: Through the 6-year period (2003-2008), 35 FHF in 35 consecutive patients (average, 30 years) were surgically treated. All FHF were caused by high-energy trauma. Patients' general condition was stabilized first and hip dislocation was manually reduced i

OBJECTIVE: Conventional surgical treatment of multilevel cervical disc disease is based on anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). However, fusion alters the biomechanics of the spine, potentially resulting in accelerated adjacent segment degeneration. To improve clinical outcomes, hybrid surgery, combining cervical disc arthroplasty with fusion, has been developed. Cervical total disc replacement (TDR) has been shown to keep the motion of adjacent segment, and a dynamic cervical implant (DCI) was shown to provide cervical dynamic stability under nonfusion. However, curative and unwant

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification (HO) in muscles, ligaments and tendons. Flare-ups often precede the formation of HO, resulting in immobilization of joints. Due to progression of the disease without signs of a flare-up, co-existence of a chronic progression of HO has been postulated, but conclusive evidence is lacking. Recently, it has been shown that [18F]NaF PET/CT is able to identify early ossifying disease activity during flare-ups. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to assess whether [

BACKGROUND: Although simple posterolateral or posterior elbow dislocations are relatively common and usually stable after closed reduction, simple posteromedial dislocations are extremely rare and poorly characterized. We investigated the clinical characteristics, soft-tissue injury patterns, treatments, and outcomes of a series of posteromedial elbow dislocations without relevant osseous lesions.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 20 cases of simple posteromedial elbow dislocations without relevant osseous lesions that were treated at 7 fellowship training hospitals during a 10-year period

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a genetic disease characterized by heterotopic ossification (HO). The disease is caused by a mutation in the activin receptor type 1 (ACVR1) gene that enhances this receptor's responsiveness to Activin-A. Binding of Activin-A to the mutated ACVR1 receptor induces osteogenic differentiation. Whether Activin-A also affects osteoclast formation in FOP is not known. Therefore we investigated its effect on the osteoclastogenesis-inducing potential of periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PLF) from teeth of healthy controls and patients with FOP. We used we

BACKGROUND: Acetabular fractures are quite challenging injuries for the orthopedic surgeon because of their low incidence and their deep and complex anatomy. The objective of this study was to evaluate surgeon-independent parameters that might influence radiographic outcome and early complication rates of high-energy acetabular fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation via the Kocher-Langenbeck approach, the golden standard for posterior access.
METHODS: One hundred sixty-seven consecutive patients (111 males and 56 females) with a mean age of 41.8 years and a mean follow-up p

BACKGROUND: There is no universally accepted approach to the elbow for the fixation of coronoid process fractures. This study aims to introduce a novel anterior surgical approach for the fixation of the ulnar coronoid fracture, with minimal surgical dissection damage and excellent visualization for reduction and internal fixation.
HYPOTHESIS: The anterior approach can facilitate satisfactory outcomes for coronoid process fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From February 2010 to July 2014, 12 patients (8 males and 4 females; range 14-62years; mean age 31years) with a closed fracture of the coron
