A study was made of the efficacy of various antityphoid immunizing agents in immunizing chimpanzees against typhoid fever produced by feeding viable S. typhosa. It was found that both acetone-killed and heat-killed, phenol-preserved typhoid vaccines were effective in protecting against infection induced with either homologous or heterologous strains of typhoid bacilli. Purified O antigen induced no discernible protection, but some immunity was afforded by the administration of purified Vi antigen.

It is the tip of the iceberg, and the balance has tilted toward difficult-to-treat typhoid and paratyphoid fevers all across the country owing to significant resistance to the commonly used antityphoid antibiotics (cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones). BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal illnesses (GI) continue to pose a substantial burden in terms of morbidity and economic impact in Canada. We describe the epidemiology of reportable GI in Ontario by characterizing the incidence of each reportable GI, as well as associated demographics, clinical outcomes, seasonality, risk settings, and likely sources of infection.
METHODS: Reports on laboratory confirmed cases of amebiasis, botulism, campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, cyclosporiasis, giardiasis, hepatitis A, listeriosis, paratyphoid fever, salmonellosis, shigellosis, typhoid fever, illness du…

Enteric fever is a multisystem febrile illness caused by Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhi, Paratyphi A, B and C. It is usually transmitted through contaminated food and water. The disease usually manifests as a febrile illness with bacteraemia after the initial entry through the gastrointestinal tract. However, extraintestinal seeding of this pathogen can occur in rare instances. Here, we report a case of chocolate cysts of the ovaries which was infected with Salmonella Paratyphi A in a sexually active woman with a previous history of enteric fever that was neglected. We r

Typhoid fever remains an important public health problem in low- and middle-income countries, with large outbreaks reported from Africa and Asia. Although the WHO recommends typhoid vaccination for control of confirmed outbreaks, there are limited data on the epidemiologic characteristics of outbreaks to inform vaccine use in outbreak settings. We conducted a literature review for typhoid outbreaks published since 1990. We found 47 publications describing 45,215 cases in outbreaks occurring in 25 countries from 1989 through 2018. Outbreak characteristics varied considerably by WHO region, with

Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhi (Salmonella Typhi) is the cause of typhoid fever and a human host-restricted organism. Our understanding of the global burden of typhoid fever has improved in recent decades, with both an increase in the number and geographic representation of high-quality typhoid fever incidence studies, and greater sophistication of modeling approaches. The 2017 World Health Organization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization recommendation for the introduction of typhoid conjugate vaccines for infants and children aged >6 months in typhoid-e

Increasing international travel to areas endemic for typhoid fever correlates with increased risk for travellers to contract the disease. At home, the acutely ill/convalescent patients may pose some risk to their close contacts. In Finland an unofficial guideline suggests vaccination for close contacts of patients with acute typhoid fever; in other developed countries, routine typhoid vaccinations are only recommended to contacts of chronic carriers. This paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of prophylactic/post-exposure typhoid vaccination for contacts of patients with acute dise

Growing evidences suggest that Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) is efficacious against bacterial infections and inflammatory bowel diseases. This study investigated the effects of treatment with SB provided in a murine model of typhoid fever. Mice were divided into two groups: (1) control animals challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium (ST), and (2) animals receiving SB, and then challenged with ST. At days 0, 1, 5, 10 and 15 post-challenge, animals were euthanized and tissues collected to analyze bacterial translocation, cytokines, signaling pathways and histological analysis. Survival rate and an

A patient of Pakistani-origin was admitted to Bradford Royal Infirmary, UK, following a 3-week history of cough, headache and general malaise. He had recently spent 10 weeks in Pakistan and on return had been diagnosed in the community with Swine flu. He developed abdominal pain and diarrhoea in the week prior to admission, and presented to hospital with fever, tachycardia and raised inflammatory markers. He deteriorated rapidly, developing signs of peritonism and Salmonella paratyphi A was grown from blood cultures. CT demonstrated a small volume of free fluid within the abdomen and the patie

Intracranial infections, especially subdural empyema, due to salmonella are rare. Subdural empyema caused by Salmonella paratyphi A has been documented only once earlier in the literature. Hence, we report a case of subdural empyema and osteomyelitis of cranial vault due to S. paratyphi A. A 42- year-old male presented with headache and purulent discharge from right parietal burr hole wound site. Patient gave a history of head injury two years ago. He underwent burr hole evacuation of chronic subdural haematoma, excision of outer membrane and right parietal craniectomy. The cultures grew S. pa
