Research on the neurocognitive characteristics of heroin addiction is sparse and studies that do exist include polydrug abusers; thus, they are unable to distinguish neurocognitive effects of heroin from those of other drugs. To identify neurocognitive correlates specific to heroin addiction, the present study was conducted in St. Petersburg, Russia where individuals typically abuse and/or become addicted to only one substance, generally alcohol or heroin. Heroin addicts were recruited from an inpatient treatment facility in St. Petersburg. Three comparison groups included alcoholics, addicts

Skin perceives touch by transmitting mechanical stimuli through a hierarchically organized, gradient-modulus architecture that concentrates stress and localizes deformation to activate mechanoreceptors. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of skin, modulus engineering has been introduced into artificial tactile systems. However, how stress transmission governs internal electric-field distributions-and how the coupling can be exploited for intelligent tactile perception-remain largely unexplored. Here we report a skin-inspired, gradient-modulus electroluminescent pressure display that dire

In this paper a new segmentation method for automatic differentiation of normal and pathological brain tissues, based on multidimensional relaxation parameter histograms, is introduced. The developed histogram pyramid algorithm, which is an extension of histogram-based cluster analysis methods, is used for automatic analysis of multiparametric image data from several body slices simultaneously. The achieved segmentation results are improved by a following merging algorithm, which merges split tissue parts. Furthermore, tissue specific relaxation parameter values are computed within each 3D tis

PURPOSE: Pretreatment estimation of pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy may support risk stratification and future response-adapted clinical studies in breast cancer. However, existing deep learning approaches often rely on "black-box" visual pattern recognition, suffering from poor interpretability, high data dependency, and limited generalizability across heterogeneous cohorts. Here, we present CLASP (Clinical Language-Aligned Slide Pathology), a knowledge-driven, multimodal framework that synergizes pathological expert knowledge with vision-language foundation m

Predator detection is a fundamental survival mechanism that has shaped the evolution of diverse antipredator strategies across animal taxa. The capacity to detect predators depends on the sensory modalities animals rely upon, and the integration of multiple sensory channels-multimodal perception-may enhance detection efficiency and improve survival. However, the functional significance and relative importance of multimodal perception in reptiles remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we experimentally disentangled the effects of individual sensory modalities-chemical, visual, and mec

Auscultation of heart sounds is an important veterinary skill requiring an understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pattern recognition. This cross-sectional study was developed to evaluate a targeted, audio-visual training resource for veterinary students to improve their understanding and auscultation of common heart conditions in horses. Fourth- and fifth-year 2021 and 2022 Bachelor of Veterinary Science students at the University of Queensland (UQ) were provided the learning resource and surveyed via online pre- and post-intervention surveys. Results were quantitatively an

Neurons use cell-adhesion molecules (CAMs) to interact with other neurons and the extracellular environment: the combination of CAMs specifies migration patterns, neuronal morphologies, and synaptic connections across diverse neuron types. Yet little is known regarding the intracellular signaling cascade mediating the CAM recognitions at the cell surface across different neuron types. In this study, we investigated the neural developmental role of Afadin1-4, a cytosolic adapter protein that connects multiple CAM families to intracellular F-actin. We introduced the conditional Afadin mutant5 to

BACKGROUND: Intrastromal misplacement of a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery is exceedingly rare. Immediate identification of the separation plane is critical to prevent additional corneal injury.
CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old woman with bilateral glaucoma underwent routine phacoemulsification. During insertion of a one-piece acrylic IOL, the lens was inadvertently delivered into the corneal stroma. The IOL remained partially unfolded within a stromal pocket. Intraoperative anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT; RESCAN 700) clearly demonstrated deep stromal

BACKGROUND: Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a non-invasive form of sinus inflammation characterized by immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated eosinophilic-rich type 1 hypersensitivity reaction. Although it is uncommon, many ophthalmic manifestations such as ophthalmoplegia, proptosis, double vision, and even visual loss can be seen in patients with AFRS due to direct optic nerve compression, immunological reaction to fungi, or other mechanisms.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this case series, we reviewed four different cases of AFRS patients with orbital complications, reviewing their clinical and ra

INTRODUCTION: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) (Berger's disease) is a primary glomerulonephritis characterized by mesangial deposition of IgA immune complexes. While it commonly presents with microscopic or gross hematuria, ocular findings as the initial manifestation are rare. Malignant hypertension, a severe complication of renal parenchymal disease, can lead to vision-threatening ocular changes such as optic disc edema, macular edema, and hypertensive choroidopathy. Early ophthalmic recognition can therefore play a pivotal role in uncovering the underlying systemic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patching the fellow eye in infancy is a well recognised therapy to encourage visual development in the lensectomised eye in cases of unilateral congenital cataract. The possibility of iatrogenic deficits of the fellow eye was investigated by comparing the vision of these patients with untreated unilateral patients and binocularly normal controls.
METHODS: Sweep visual evoked potentials (VEPs) offer a rapid and objective method for estimating grating acuity. Sweep VEPs were used to estimate acuity in 12 children aged between 4 and 16 years who had had a congenital cataract removed

Previous studies showed that neurons in the monkey premotor cortex became active when performing a particular action and also when observing the same action performed by others. These findings suggest a mirror system for action observation. Recently, bimodal neurons, sensitive both to visual and tactile stimulation, were reported in the parietal cortex, suggesting a potential mirror neuron system for observing and experiencing tactile stimulation. Subsequently, a mirror neuron system for observed touch has been suggested. The current study was designed to determine whether the activation of a

Objectives: Ductus venosus (DV) Doppler examinations in pregnancy have a widespread use for several important indications and play a crucial role in order to determine the fetal well-being. DV is usually visualized by the color Doppler mapping. We observed the instantaneous spectral flow type changes in pulsed Doppler examinations in spite of performing with the correct technique published by several authors. The variability of the pattern makes the sonographer/physician to be unsure for the correct placements of the sample gate despite fulfilling the all the criteria required for the vessel s

The evolution of visual traits in closely related species living in sympatry is highly influenced by their ecological interactions: while sexual selection tends to promote the divergence of visual cues involved in mate choice, natural selection via predation may promote the convergence of dissuasive signals between prey species, especially in unpalatable or evasive prey. Here, we investigate the impact of sympatry on the evolution of the blue structural coloration in the wings of two closely related Morpho butterfly species across several localities throughout Central and South America. In humans, invalid visual targets that mismatch spatial expectations induced by attentional cues are considered to selectively engage a right hemispheric "reorienting" network that includes the temporal parietal junction (TPJ), the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), and the medial frontal gyrus (MFG). However, recent findings suggest that this hemispheric dominance is not absolute and that it is rather observed because the TPJ and IFG areas in the left hemisphere are engaged both by invalid and valid cued targets. Because of this, the BOLD response of the left hemisphere to invalid targets is usual

Learning about temporal structure is adaptive because it enables the generation of expectations. We examined how the brain uses experience in structured environments to anticipate upcoming events. During fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging), individuals watched a 90 s movie clip six times. Using a hidden Markov model applied to searchlights across the whole brain, we identified temporal shifts between activity patterns evoked by the first vs. repeated viewings of the movie clip. In many regions throughout the cortex, neural activity patterns for repeated viewings shifted to precede tho

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is commonly diagnosed in childhood and adolescence, and the developing brain has to cope with its deleterious effects. Although brain adaptation to the disease may not result in evident cognitive dysfunction, the effects of T1D on neurodevelopment could alter the pattern of BOLD fMRI activation. The aim of this study was to explore the neural BOLD activation pattern in patients with T1D versus that of healthy matched controls while performing two visuospatial working memory tasks, which included a pair of assignments administered through a block design. In the first task
