INTRODUCTION: Research on psychosocial interventions for dementia demonstrates increased rigour and robustness. However, if we are to influence practice, beyond results from randomised controlled trials, a variety of types and sources of evidence is needed. The Medical Research Council (MRC) framework offers a valuable guide for developing, evaluating and implementing complex interventions, to facilitate integration of research into practice. There is limited knowledge of how researchers design, evaluate and implement psychosocial intervention studies in dementia, using the MRC framework. This

INTRODUCTION: While evidence consistently demonstrates elevated COVID-19 risks among people with intellectual and physical disabilities, less is known about how household living arrangements shape these inequalities. Residential setting and household size influence exposure, capacity to isolate and reliance on care yet have rarely been examined jointly with disability status at a population scale. This study aims to estimate disability-related inequalities in COVID-19 infection, hospitalisation and mortality in Scotland and to assess whether residential setting and household size modify these

INTRODUCTION: Obesity disproportionately impacts people with intellectual disabilities (PwID). Given the challenges that PwID face, such as cognitive deficits, differences in motivation and communication difficulties, the need for tailored interventions for weight management in PwID is recognised. Yet, this population is underserved, with limited weight management interventions for them compared with the general population. Existing reviews suggest that 'multi-component' interventions (including physical activity and dietary advice) are impactful at reducing weight in PwID; however, less is kn

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical services are often lacking or nonexistent in low- and middle-income countries. Although there are limited data available on the current state of neurosurgery in Afghanistan, the existing data paint a dismal picture of inadequate clinical and research infrastructure. There are an estimated 74 neurosurgeons in the country (0.2 neurosurgeons per 100,000 people) working in 16 hospitals concentrated in urban centers, despite the fact that about 70% of the population live in rural areas. Technology seems to be a promising tool with which to enhance neurosurgical health syst

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk and alterations in lipid metabolism. Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) and interleukin-6 inhibitors (IL-6i) have offered effective control of disease activity; however, their impact on lipid profiles and subsequent CV outcomes has yet to be fully elucidated. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of JAKi and IL-6i on lipid profiles, inflammatory biomarkers, and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with RA. Nineteen peer-reviewed studies published

This protocol outlines planned methodology for a systematic review and meta-analysis of dopaminergic neuroimaging findings in individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). Converging evidence across substance use disorders (SUDs) shows dopaminergic dysregulation, including low dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) availability and dopamine release, correlating to anhedonia, altered reward processing, impulsivity, and drug-seeking. Opioid use indirectly alters dopamine signaling, with preclinical work showing dopamine D2 receptor and transporter (DAT) changes. However, human Positron Emission Tomography (PE

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the sixth most common malignancy worldwide, with immune checkpoint inhibitors transforming treatment paradigms despite modest response rates of approximately 30%. Emotional distress, encompassing depression and anxiety symptoms, affects 30-50% of cancer patients and may influence immunotherapy efficacy through immune system modulation. Recent studies in lung cancer, gastric cancer and melanoma demonstrate associations between pretreatment emotional distress and worse immunotherapy outcomes. However, this relationship remains unexplored in patients with

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and related cardiometabolic comorbidities, including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, are increasingly prevalent among individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These conditions influence disease activity, therapeutic response, surgical outcomes and overall quality of life, yet evidence remains fragmented. The Modulate Obesity and relateD metabolic complIcations For Yielding improvements in IBD outcomes (MODIFY-IBD) initiative aims to synthesise evidence and

PURPOSE: Cyclodialysis cleft (CDC) is an uncommon but potentially vision-threatening condition characterized by separation of the ciliary body from the scleral spur, often causing hypotony and maculopathy. While small clefts may resolve with conservative or minor treatment, large traumatic CDCs in phakic eyes remain challenging due to limited evidence on optimal management. This systematic review aims to evaluate current surgical approaches for repairing large traumatic CDCs in phakic eyes, focusing on success rates, complication profiles, and the impact of treatment timing on outcomes.

RATIONALE: Shared decision-making (SDM) is advocated in psychiatric care to facilitate patients' engagement in treatment discussions about their own care. However, applying SDM in practice involves more than simply referring to an advocated method. It is therefore interesting to study healthcare professionals' perceptions and experiences of the conditions necessary for patients to truly participate in SDM.
AIM: To explore healthcare staff's experiences of patient involvement in psychiatric care, paying particular attention to perceived prerequisites, barriers and strategies relevant to shared

BACKGROUND: Family members' involvement in the care for their relative often continues after their relative has moved out of the family home. However, little is known about the needs of family members when collaborating specifically with support staff caring for their relative. This scoping review provides an overview of existing literature to inform future research.
METHOD: The review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA for Scoping Review statement. Seven databases were systematically searched in April 2022 (with a final update in May 2025). Studies that were published in English in

BACKGROUND: Body image distress (BID) is a significant psychological issue for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and arises from the visible disfigurements and functional impairments often associated with the disease and its treatment. Understanding the factors contributing to BID in this population is crucial for developing effective interventions and support mechanisms.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review outlines methods for identifying, evaluating, and synthesizing the available evidence on factors associated with BID among patients with HNC. This review intends to explore both clini

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive efforts in HIV prevention, significant barriers to accessing interventions such as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) persist in Canada. Although PrEP has demonstrated efficacy in preventing HIV transmission, various structural, social and systemic factors continue to impede its widespread adoption and use. These factors influence the uptake (acceptance and access) and use (adherence and retention) of PrEP. The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the existing body of evidence regarding the barriers and facilitators to uptake and use of PrEP in Canada.

BACKGROUND: With the explosion of techniques for recording electrical brain activity, our recognition of neurodiversity has expanded significantly. Yet, uncertainty exists regarding sex differences in electrical activity during sleep and whether these differences, if any, are associated with social parameters. We synthesised existing evidence applying the PROGRESS-Plus framework, which captures social parameters that may influence brain activity and function.
METHODS: We searched five databases from inception to December 2024, and included English language peer-reviewed research examining sex
