Resilience in the aftermath of trauma: Classes of adjustment in at-risk youth.

OBJECTIVE: Youth who have been exposed to potentially traumatic events are at risk of developing chronic and severe adjustment problems. However, some youth exposed to potentially traumatic events exhibit better-than-expected adaptation. Person-centered analyses, based on multiple criteria for adaptive behavior and adversity, are well-suited to empirically identifying different patterns of adaptation among high-risk youth. METHOD: Data from 381 youth from three at-risk subgroups in Portugal were collected using self-reported measures of trauma history, trauma-related symptomatology, coping sk

Perceived parental support in childhood and adolescence as a tool for mental health screening in students: A longitudinal study in the i-Share cohort.

BACKGROUND: Negative events in childhood are associated with increased risk of mental health problems, and evaluation could help identify students at high risk of mental health disorder. However, childhood adversity measures are difficult to implement in routine care. Perceived parental support in childhood and adolescence may be more easily assessed, as it is a rather neutral and non-intrusive question. METHODS: We retrieved students' health data collected from the French i-Share cohort, in a longitudinal population-based study including 4463 students of 18-24 years of age. Students in this

On being loyal to a casino: The interactive influence of tier status and disordered gambling symptomatology on attitudinal and behavioral loyalty.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Casino loyalty programs are marketing strategies designed to foster attitudinal (i.e., identification and satisfaction) and behavioral (i.e., spending) loyalty among gamblers by offering rewards to members. Casino loyalty programs use a tier-based structure to segment members who spend more money into higher tiers, where they receive better rewards (compared to lower tiered members). Tier-based structures may encourage increased expenditure among patrons, especially among players living with a gambling disorder. The current work aimed to examine whether tier status and dis

[Nursing Experience With Reconstructing Self-Control Using Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy on a Patient With Schizophrenia and Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms].

This case report describes a nursing experience caring for a patient with schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. This patient suffered from symptoms of being controlled, obsessive thoughts, and compulsive behaviors. In addition, the patient showed no interest in implementing strategies for dealing with anxiety, no motivation for changing this suffering, and an inability to receive a higher level of rehabilitative job training in daycare. These problems impeded this patient's reintegration into the community. Therefore, the authors employed a five-dimension assessment (physical, emoti

Eating disorders among female adolescents in Switzerland: prevalence and associations with mental and behavioral disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the prevalence of eating disorders in a national representative sample of adolescent girls and association of eating disorders with other behavioral/mental problems in Switzerland. METHODS: As part of a national health survey, a subsample of 1,084 15 to 20-year-old female students attending school aged filled in a self-administered anonymous questionnaire focusing on eating behavior and body image. Factor analysis made on these specific questions reveals two major dimensions: weight and image concern (WIC) and problematic eating conduct (PEC). The correlates of these tw

Behavioral diagnostics.

The contemporary behavior analyst, to operate ethically and effectively, must be aware of many more factors affecting behavior than simple consequences. Although the literature demonstrating the effectiveness of active behavior management is impressive, a compelling argument can be made that a great number of behavior problem seen in individuals with developmental disabilities may be attributable to factors other than consequences. Our experience has been more often than not that physiological, organic, medication, or situational variables are the actual culprits in maladaptive behavior. Indiv

[The characteristics and mechanism of onset of abnormal eating behavior due to stress or psychosomatic diseases].

Abnormal eating behavior is characterized by two major categories. One, stress-induced abnormal eating behavior, is characterized by abnormality of degree and frequency of diet, which stands for appetite loss or appetite gain. They are connected with psychosocial or somatic stress and show temporary disorder for almost all the people. The other, abnormal eating behavior accompanied with psychosomatic diseases, is characterized by chronically devastated cognition and behavior of diet, which represents Anorexia Nervosa(AN) or Bulimia Nervosa(BN). The characteristics and mechanism of onset of the

Prenatal bisphenol A exposure and maternally reported behavior in boys and girls.

Prenatal exposure to gonadal hormones plays a major role in the normal development of the male and female brain and sexually dimorphic behaviors. Hormone-dependent differences in brain structure and function suggest that exposure to exogenous endocrine disrupting chemicals may be associated with sex-specific alterations in behavior. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental chemical that has been shown to alter estrogen, androgen, and thyroid hormone signaling pathways. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest associations between prenatal exposure to BPA and child behavior, however data a

Attention Problems and Comorbid Symptoms following Child Sexual Abuse.

Treatment utilization following child sexual abuse (CSA) is essential in combatting the various negative consequences of CSA. Youth may present to treatment for CSA with symptoms that cut across multiple diagnostic presentations that impact their ability to successfully engage in treatment. In particular, children who have difficulties with attention may have unique treatment needs following CSA. The purpose of this study was to examine how attention problems interplay with comorbid symptoms and how these clinical presentations impact treatment outcomes for youth who have been sexually abused.

In utero exposure to endogenous maternal polyclonal anti-Caspr2 antibody leads to behavioral abnormalities resembling autism spectrum disorder in male mice.

The concept that exposure in utero to maternal anti-brain antibodies contributes to the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been entertained for over a decade. We determined that antibodies targeting Caspr2 are present at high frequency in mothers with brain-reactive serology and a child with ASD, and further demonstrated that exposure in utero to a monoclonal anti-Caspr2 antibody, derived from a mother of an ASD child, led to an-ASD like phenotype in male offspring. Now we propose a new model to study the effects of in utero exposure to anti-Caspr2 antibody. Dams immunized with

Is risperidone effective in reducing challenging behaviours in individuals with intellectual disabilities after 1 year or longer use? A placebo-controlled, randomised, double-blind discontinuation study.

BACKGROUND: Many people with intellectual disabilities use risperidone long term for the management of challenging behaviours, despite its limited proof of effectiveness and its clear association with adverse events. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ongoing treatment with risperidone in reducing challenging behaviours versus controlled discontinuation on behaviour and health parameters. METHOD: This was a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomised discontinuation trial of risperidone. In the discontinuation group, risperidone was gradually replaced by a placeb

Predicting Depression and Anxiety from Oppositional Defiant Disorder Symptoms in Elementary School-Age Girls and Boys with Conduct Problems.

This study investigated the relationship between the three DSM-5 categories of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms (irritable mood, defiant behavior, vindictive behavior) and anxiety/depression in girls and boys with conduct problems (CP) while controlling for comorbid child psychopathology at baseline. Data were drawn from an ongoing longitudinal study of 6- to 9-year-old French-Canadian children (N = 276; 40.8 % girls) receiving special educational services for CP at school and followed for 2 years. Using linear regression analysis, the results showed that irritable mood symptoms pr

Factors related to unwanted pregnancies and abortion in the northern district of the city of Tehran, Iran.

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels and determinants of unwanted pregnancies and therapeutic and elective induced abortions in an Iranian sample of women. This study was conducted from the beginning of 2013 to the end of July 2013, using data from 950 women aged 15-45 years. To evaluate the relationship of independent variables to the number of unwanted pregnancies, a negative binomial regression model was used. A multinomial logistic model was used to investigate the relationship of the history of at least one unwanted pregnancy to therapeutic and elective induced abortion. Th

More learned irrelevance than perseveration errors in rule shifting in healthy subjects.

The present experiments examined the extent to which two possible sources of error affect healthy subjects' performance in a rule-shift task. All 115 participants first received a discrimination learning task, in which a pair of different visual stimuli was presented on each trial, one of which had to be identified as 'correct.' Each stimulus varied in two dimensions: a task-relevant and a task-irrelevant dimension. Feedback on correctness was given after each choice. After eight successive correct choices, the nature of the task-relevant dimension changed: the post-shift learning phase. Two t

Gambling Motives and Offshore Gambling: A Finnish Population Study.

The rise of online gambling has drawn attention towards offshore gambling. Currently there is lack of evidence on reasons and motivations to gamble on offshore gambling sites. This study investigated the general gambling motives of onshore and offshore gamblers, and the reasons to gamble on offshore gambling sites. The study used binary logistic regression model to analyze the data from Finnish Gambling 2019 population survey including adult past-year online gamblers (n = 1,422). The validated measure for problem gambling severity (PGSI, Problem Gambling Severity Index) was used. Furthermore,

Solving the Inverse Problem of Electrocardiography on the Endocardium Using a Single Layer Source.

The inverse problem of electrocardiography consists in reconstructing cardiac electrical activity from given body surface electrocardiographic measurements. Despite tremendous progress in the field over the last decades, the solution of this problem in terms of electrical potentials on both epi- and the endocardial heart surfaces with acceptable accuracy remains challenging. This paper presents a novel numerical approach aimed at improving the solution quality on the endocardium. Our method exploits the solution representation in the form of electrical single layer densities on the myocardial
