A 51-year-old-woman presented with chronic eosinophilia, a diffuse interstitial lung pattern on CT and splenomegaly with hypodense lesions. A diagnosis of sarcoidosis was determined from a lung biopsy. Hyperinfection with strongyloides following treatment with systemic steroids explains the presence of eosinophilia and splenic involvement.

Previous reports showed that the tepezcuintle (Agouti paca) is commonly infested by gastrointestinal parasites (GIP), mainly Eucoccidiida and helminths. However, there is no available information on the frequency of those parasites and their faecal egg excretions at different moments during the year. These information would provide a valuable baseline for the establishment of control strategies against GIP in tepezcuintles under captivity. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of GIP orders and genera that infest tepezcuintles under captivity and, to describe the

Recently several inbred strains of mice were found to be hyporesponsive to Interleukin (IL)-3 because of a 5-bp deletion in the intron 7 of the gene that encodes IL-3 receptor alpha subunit (IL-3R alpha). Due to this mutation, mast cells were not generated in vitro from bone marrow cells of these mice under the presence of IL-3. Intestinal mucosal mast cells, of which growth/differentiation is dependent on IL-3, are important effector cells in immune-mediated expulsion of intestinal nematodes, Stronglyoides spp. In the present study, therefore, we examined intestinal mast cell response and muc

Immunocompromised individuals infected with Strongyloides stercoralis may develop severe hyperinfection or disseminated disease with high mortality. Patients with hematological malignancies are at risk because of immunodepression produced either by the disease or its treatment. A prospective study was undertaken at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, from July 1994 to July 1995. Seventy-two (HIV negative), had 3 stool samples collected at different days and had not received recent anthelmintic therapy. Larvae, isolated in a modified Baermann method, were found in 6 patients, with a resul

Infection remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in cardiac transplant patients. Skin infections are not uncommon in these patients. Although usually caused by secondary dissemination after initial infection of another organ system, some skin infections may be primary infections, such as bacterial infections caused by the use of intravenous catheters or fungal infections in severely immunosuppressed patients. Nevertheless, the presence of skin lesions in a transplant patient may indicate infection in a primary site or another deep-seated focus of infection.

Repetitive administration of recombinant IL-3 induced protection against Strongyloides ratti but not against Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in C57BL/6 mice. Numbers of S. ratti were negligible from day 4 to day 6 post-infection in mice injected with IL-3, whereas N. brasiliensis burdens were almost equal from day 4 to day 6 between mice injected with IL-3 or with medium. Mice treated with IL-3 and then concurrently infected with S. ratti and N. brasiliensis were protected from intestinal S. ratti but not from N. brasiliensis. The numbers of intestinal mucosal mast cells were increased by the rep

We performed a retrospective review of screening parasitology examinations on a Cambodian refugee population served by an urban neighborhood health center. Five-hundred twenty of 1084 patients were examined for ova and parasites either by purged stool, which was examined immediately, or preserved stool, examined at a teaching hospital and proprietary laboratories. Overall, 335 (64 percent) of the tested patients had at least one parasite. The prevalence of infection varied by test technique (purged stool examined immediately, 86 percent; preserved stool examined at a hospital, 65 percent; pres

After a primary infection of congenitally athymic nu/nu mice with Strongyloides ratti, worms were not expelled and the number of intestinal mucosal mast cells (MMC) remained at a low level. When S. ratti-infected nu/nu mice were treated by repetitive injections of semi-purified IL-3 from Day 5 to Day 10 post-infection (total 1.4 X 10(5) U), significant reduction of larval excretion in faeces (LPG) was observed on Day 13. The number of adult worms in the small intestine of IL-3-treated mice was significantly lower than that of untreated, infected nude mice. The higher dose of IL-3 treatment fro

The findings of an investigation mounted to evaluate and compare the prevalence of parasitic gastro-intestinal helminth ova in three different breeds of dogs in Calabar, Nigeria are presented. Results of the investigation indicate that in Alsatians, 25% infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis, 25% Toxocara canis, 65% Ancylostoma caninum were found, in crossbreed between Alsatian and Mongrel, 15.56% infestation with Strongyloides stercoralis, 10.93% Toxascaris leonina, 25% Toxocara canis, 68.75% Ancylostoma caninum, 1.66% Dipylidium caninum were recorded while 15.88% infestation with Strongy

alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, alpha 1-antitrypsin, and ceruloplasmin levels were followed in 150 children from the rural tropics after arrival in the temperate zone. It is postulated that multiple intestinal helminthiases, especially ancylostomiasis, cause an acute phase type of reaction which is enhanced by immunization with T.A.B.-cholera vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of strongyloidiasis in the Laotian population, Laotian hospitals still lack diagnostic capacity to appropriately diagnose Strongyloides stercoralis infections. This cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among hospitalized patients treated at Mahosot Hospital, the primary reference hospital of Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and to validate feasible methods for diagnosing S. stercoralis infection at hospital's laboratory.
METHODS: Between September and December 2018,…

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a widespread helminth in tropical and subtropical regions, which can persist in humans for life through autoinfection. The clinical picture varies from asymptomatic to life-threatening hyperinfection syndrome. There is concern about increasing prevalence in Europe due to the number of cases imported by migrants and travelers.
METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of patients evaluated at the Charité Tropical Medicine outpatient clinic in Berlin, Germany. Cases were identified based on either a positive serologic test for Strongyloides (i.e., pr

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of treatment with ivermectin on the prevalence of S. stercoralis infection in an Australian Aboriginal population over a three year period, and to assess the validity of using a lower ELISA cut-off in diagnosis.
METHODS: A three-year cohort study of 259 adult Australian Aboriginals living in a remote community in northern Australia. S stercoralis infection was diagnosed using commercial ELISA testing, and employed a lower threshold for treatment than that recommended. Follow up was conducted at 6 months and 3 years following ivermectin treatment.
FINDINGS: Tr

Syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone (SIADH) has been reported to be associated with systemic Strongyloides stercoralis. Here, we report a case of a stem cell transplant (SCT) recipient who developed severe SIADH secondary to systemic S Stercoralis. The SIADH resolved quickly after treating the systemic S Stercoralis with ivermectin. A systematic review of the literature was performed by PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane database search. Only eight cases of S Stercoralis in allogeneic SCT recipients have been previously reported. To our knowledge, ours is the first reported case of SIADH

Immunocompromised patients have high risk of infections from bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. One of these infections is those caused by Strongyloides stercoralis Immunocompromised patients are at risk of hyperinfection syndrome which is characterised with more systemic manifestation and a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. This can be complicated by coinfection with enteric organisms, specifically Gram-negative. Enterococci are Gram-positive cocci which are inhabitants of the human gastrointestinal tract. Even though enterococci can cause serious infections in multiple sites, they

Only five cases of multifocal medulloblastoma in the adult have been reported to date. We present a case in a male patient in his 50th decade of life who presented with three extra-axial lesions associated with a parenchymatous lesion of the right middle cerebellar peduncle. Sputum sample examination revealed larvae compatible with strongyloides stercoralis, which was our main differential diagnosis. Histological and immunohistochemical studies revealed the existence of a desmoplastic medulloblastoma.
