Long-term surgical results of combined trabeculotomy ab externo and cataract extraction.

Trabeculotomy ab externo has been demonstrated to be effective in controlling intraocular pressure (IOP) in adult patients with either primary open-angle glaucoma or pseudoexfoliation syndrome. We evaluated the surgical outcome of 60 eyes with either primary open-angle glaucoma or pseudoexfoliation syndrome that underwent combined trabeculotomy ab externo and cataract extraction. All patients were at least 40 years old, and were followed for at least 1 year. At the final examination, IOP was well controlled (21 mm Hg or less) in 54 (90%) of the 60 eyes, with or without medication. Also, "overa

Management of overfiltering and leaking blebs with autologous blood injection.

We describe our experience with intrableb autologous blood injection to manage over-filtering and leaking blebs. Autologous blood was injected into 12 thin cystic filtration blebs of 12 eyes. Indications for blood injection included symptomatic hypotony in five eyes, hypotony associated with bleb leakage in five eyes, and bleb leakage without hypotony in two eyes. Seven eyes (58.3%) were classified as successes and five eyes (41.7%) were classified as failures. The mean (+/- SD) follow-up was 6.8 +/- 2.6 months. Among the eyes classified as successes, a significant increase was noted in intrao

[Prevention of intraocular pressure elevation after argon laser trabeculoplasty in primary open angle glaucoma].

INTRODUCTION: Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) is an intraocular pressure lowering method that is overall safe and powerful, but often complicated by transient postoperative intraocular pressure rises. In prevention of this complication, we frequently use two potent alpha-adrenergic agonists--brimonidine and apraclonidine. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare brimonidine 0.2% and apraclonidine 0.5% efficacy and safety in prevention of intraocular pressure elevation after ALT. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, double-masked and comparative study. This study included 27

Endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) for open angle glaucoma and primary angle closure.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness. A number of minimally invasive surgical techniques have been introduced as a treatment to prevent glaucoma progressing. Among them, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) is a cyclodestructive procedure developed by Martin Uram in 1992. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ECP in people with open angle glaucoma (OAG) and primary angle closure whose condition is inadequately controlled with drops. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Cochrane

Exfoliation Syndrome: A Disease of Autophagy and LOXL1 Proteopathy.

Exfoliation syndrome (XFS) is an age-related disease involving the deposition of aggregated fibrillar material (exfoliation material) at extracellular matrices in tissues that synthesize elastic fibers. Its main morbidity is in the eye, where exfoliation material accumulations form on the surface of the ciliary body, iris, and lens. Exfoliation glaucoma (XFG) occurs in a high proportion of persons with XFS and can be a rapidly progressing disease. Worldwide, XFG accounts for about 25% of open-angle glaucoma cases. XFS and XFG show a sharp age-dependence, similarly to the many age-related disea
