Laboratory confirmed bloodstream infection aetiology in an intensive care unit: eight years study.

To evaluate laboratory confirmed bloodstream infection (LC-BSI) aetiology we carried out a prospective study in the general 13 bed ICU of the teaching hospital Policlinico Umberto I in Rome. According to CDC case definitions for LC-BSI, all patients admitted >48h between 2000-2007 to ICU were included. Risk factors (i.e. age, sex, SAPS II), invasive procedures (i.e. endotracheal intubation, vascular and urinary catheterisation), microbiological isolates and their antibiotic susceptibility were screened. Overall 1741 patients (64.8% males, 35.2% females) were included, mean age was 58.1 +/- 19.

A comparison of the antimicrobial resistance patterns of gram-negative bacilli isolated from community-private and university-affiliated hospitals from Puerto Rico.

Few studies have been performed in Puerto Rico concerning the antimicrobial resistance pattern of clinically significant Gram-negative bacil … tics with the exception of ciprofloxacin and gentamicin, which was similar in both hospitals group. Acinetobacter baumannii was the most resistant organisms in both hospitals group. UAH isolates were significantly more resistant than CPH isolates for all tested antibiotics. When compare with other large-scale antimicrobial resistance studies, the present study results su …

Tackling antibiotic resistance in ESKAPE pathogens through the lens of bacterial small RNAs.

The worldwide emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens pose a significant risk to public health. The ESKAPE group of pathogens-specifically Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species has gained notoriety due to its multidrug-resistance and causing hospital-acquired infections. These pathogens are linked to higher rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as substantial economic burden. Bacterial small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) represent a distinct class of RNA molecules and serve k…

A Critical Review of Short Antimicrobial Peptides from Scorpion Venoms, Their Physicochemical Attributes, and Potential for the Development of New Drugs.

Scorpion venoms have proven to be excellent sources of antimicrobial agents. However, although many of them have been functionally character … l properties with the bioactivity of ssAMPs in pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Acinetobacter baumannii, it is evident that in addition to the net charge, the hydrophobic moment, electrostatic energy, or intrinsic flexibility are determining parameters to understand their performance. Although the correlation between these parameters is very complex, …

Assembly and Functional Role of PACE Transporter PA2880 from Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The recently identified proteobacterial antimicrobial compound efflux (PACE) transporters are multidrug transporters energized by the electrochemical gradient of protons. Here, we present the results of phylogenetic and functional studies on the PACE family transporter PA2880 from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A phylogenetic analysis of the PACE family revealed that PA2880 and AceI from Acinetobacter baumannii are classified into evolutionarily distinct clades, although they both transport chlorhexidine. We demonstrate that PA2880 mainly exists as a dimer in solution, which is independent of pH, and…

Escherichia coli ST155 as a production-host of three different polyvalent phages and their characterisation with a prospect for wastewater disinfection.

Bacteriophages are generally specific, and a cocktail of phages is needed to combat different bacterial targets. Their production usually requires pathogenic isolation hosts. We identified a novel strain, Escherichia coli ST155, that could serve as a production host for three different polyvalent phages (ϕPh_SE03, ϕPh_SD01, and ϕPh_EC01), thus superseding the use of individual isolation hosts. Upon propagation in E. coli ST155, the phages demonstrated differential intergeneric infectivity against Salmonella enterica, E. coli OP50, Shigella dysenteriae, E. coli MDR, and Acinetobacter baumannii.…
