BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infection of the fetus can only be discovered or prevented by the appropriate serological screening and subsequent treatment of the mother and her offspring. In Hungary, there is no obligatory toxoplasma screening for pregnant women and both the reporting and follow-up of congenital toxoplasmosis cases is limited. In 1987 we started a systematic study in the Szeged region of Hungary, in which all pregnant women were screened and appropriate treatment given to all mothers and their offspring where congenital toxoplasmosis was suspected.

Despite various pointers to an infectious aetiology, the cause of Bell's palsy remains obscure. We examined paired sera from 62 patients with facial palsy and 50 age and sex matched contemporaneous controls. We investigated the incidence of herpes zoster (HZ) and the immunological state to HZ in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) in comparison with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The clinical course of 69 patients with neurocysticercosis who underwent surgery to control increased intracranial pressure (ICP) or cyst removal is analyzed. Increased ICP was caused by hydrocephalus in 63 patients, by cerebral edema in four, and by giant cysts in two. Skull x-ray films showed calcifications in 14% and signs of elevated ICP in 46%. Maternal and umbilical cord levels of antibodies to dengue 2 and 3 viruses were compared in 54 matched pairs of specimens from subjects in the Dominican Republic. Dengue infection appeared to be hyperendemic; pregnant women experienced a 6% weekly infection rate. Between November 1990 and March 1992, 24 asymptomatic individuals in Chile with chronic hepatic fascioliasis confirmed by the presence of Fasciola hepatica eggs in feces were treated with a single oral dose of triclabendazole (10 mg/kg of body weight) after an overnight fast. Serum cryoglobulins were found in nineteen out of twenty patients with infectious endocarditis. The cryoglobulins were of the 'mixed type' consisting of IgG, IgM and IgA. C3 and fibrinogen were present in some specimens. The concentration of the cryoglobulins tended to fall with therapy and clinical improvement of the patients.
