BACKGROUND: The angiogenesis inhibitor monoclonal antibody Bevacizumab is presently the standard treatment for numerous neoplasms but particular toxicities are emerging, such as hypertension, haemorrhage, thromboembolism, gastrointestinal perforation, fistulae, and delayed wound healing. The addition of Bevacizumab to radio and chemotherapy has improved the overall survival rate in patients with metastatic, persistent or recurrent cervical carcinoma. However an increased risk of enteric or urinary fistula formation has been documented, related to hypoxia which is induced by the inhibition of a

OBJECTIVES: The short-term efficacy and safety of transcatheter closure (TCC) for the management of coronary artery fistulas (CAFs) was investigated in pediatric patients.
BACKGROUND: CAFS are rare with potentially severe complications and their management is still a matter of debate. Percutaneous closure appears to be the treatment of choice in anatomically suitable vessels but limited data are available in the pediatric population.
METHODS: This retrospective, observational, multicenter, national study included patients under 16 years of age who underwent TCC of a congenital CAF. Patients

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) implantation is a treatment for selected patients with failing bioprostheses. We previously showed that currently available SAPIEN (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) TAV sizes did not yield acceptable valve-in-valve (VIV) hemodynamics in small degenerated bioprostheses because optimal TAV function requires full stent expansion to its nominal size. The study objective was to determine (1) if 20-mm TAVs provide acceptable hemodynamics in small degenerated bioprostheses and (2) the effect of TAV spatial orientation on valvular hemodynamics and coronary

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of type II endoleaks and sac pressurization on stent-graft displacement following endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).
METHODS: Experimental silicone infrarenal aneurysm (6-cm) models were "treated" with a Talent stent-graft deployed with 20-mm proximal and distal landing zones. Inflow and outflow vessels were created as part of the silicone model to control flow into the aneurysm sac. All aneurysm models were uniform, with a diameter neck of 31 mm, a neck length of 20 mm, and iliac artery diameters of 16 mm. The aortic model was secured in a water bath to a p

PURPOSE: To assess and validate the clinical features predisposing to stent-graft migration and to calculate the distal displacement forces exerted at the proximal fixation site following endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR).
METHODS: Demographic, anatomical, and graft-related features from 2862 patients were analyzed in a regression model to identify variables associated with stent-graft migration, which was defined as device movement >5 mm or considered significant by the investigator. Using the principles of continuity and momentum, a mathematical model of blood flow was created. The

The Bailey-Dubow nail, inserted in the femur or tibia of 34 children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), was studied retrospectively. Comparing the various groups of OI, no significant difference was found. Location of the nail (tibia or femur) did not influence the complication rate significantly. The reoperation rate was 29%, a rate comparable to that reported in earlier studies. The part of the nail located around the knee had a significantly higher migration rate (P = 0.005 at obturator ends and P = 0.007 at sleeve ends). Migration of the nail was the reason to reoperate in 50% of the patie

Rigid ureteroscopy has become a common tool for the diagnosis and management of several diseases of the upper urinary tract. Between April 1990 and April 1996, 92 ureteroscopy procedures were performed in 88 patients in the B Urology Department of Avicennes hospital for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. The commonest therapeutic procedure was stone manipulation (72 cases). The overall success rate was 90.8% (Distal ureter: 89.6%, mid ureter: 80%, lumbar ureter: 100%) and the complication rate was 4%. Therapeutic ureteroscopy was also used to dry ureterovaginal fistula (4 cases) and ureteral

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign bodies (FBs) in the bladder can result from iatrogenic causes, migration from adjacent organs, penetrating injuries, or self-insertion. They serve as a nidus for calcification and stone formation. While bladder stones related to FBs are occasionally seen in adults, such cases are extremely rare in children.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 2.5-year-old girl (10 kg) presented with chronic irritability, abdominal pain, dysuria, and intermittent hematuria for 1 year, unresponsive to antibiotics and antipyretics. Examination was unremarkable, with a leukocyte count of

Tendon disorders are common injuries, which can be greatly debilitating as they are often accompanied by great pain and inflammation. Moreover, several problems are also related to the laceration of the tendon-to-bone interface (TBI), a specific region subjected to great mechanical stresses. The techniques used nowadays for the treatment of tendon and TBI injuries often involve surgery. However, one critical aspect of this procedure involves the elevated risk of fail due to the tissues weakening and the postoperative alterations of the normal joint mechanics. Synthetic polymers, such as thermo

Skin wound healing and regeneration is very challenging across the world as simple or acute wounds can be transformed into chronic wounds or ulcers due to foreign body invasion, or diseases like diabetes or cancer. The study was designed to develop a novel bioactive scaffold, by loading aloesin to chitosan-coated cellulose scaffold, to cure full-thickness skin wounds. The physiochemical characterization of the scaffold was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) facilitated by energy-dispersive spectrophotometer (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Fourier transform infrared

BACKGROUND: Bioglass is a highly adoptable bone substitute material which can be combined with so-called therapeutic ions. However, knowledge is poor regarding the influence of therapeutic ions on immune reactions and associated bone healing. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the influence of strontium- and copper-doped bioglass on the induction of M1 and M2 macrophages, as well as vascularization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two types of alkali glass were produced based on ICIE16 bioglass via the melt-quench method with the addition of 5 wt% copper or strontium (ICIE16-Cu and ICIE16-S
