Genomic Characterization of Selected ESKAPEEE Clinical Isolates From Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Southwestern Uganda: Resistome, Multilocus Sequence Typing, Mobilome, and Virulome.

BACKGROUND: The global dissemination of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterobacter cloacae pathogens is increasingly driven by the convergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) and hypervirulence. These opportunistic pathogens are characterized by their ability to "escape" the bactericidal effects of conventional antibiotics through a refined repertoire of resistance mechanisms. Infections related to these pathogens are responsible for the majority of hospital-acquire

High Biofilm-Forming Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella Infantis Strains from the Poultry Production Chain.

The ability of Salmonella species to adhere to surfaces and form biofilms, leading to persistent environmental reservoirs, might represent a direct link between environmental contamination and food processing contamination. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biofilm-forming ability of 80 multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis strains isolated from the broiler food chain production through whole genome sequencing (WGS), PCR, and morphotype association assays. Biofilm formation was quantified by testing t

Co-selection of heavy metal and antibiotic resistance in Enterobacteriaceae members from Mula-Mutha River (Pune, India).

Urban rivers are increasingly facing contamination and degradation due to unregulated human activities and are becoming significant reservoirs for pollutants, including toxic heavy metals (HMs) and antibiotics. This co-occurrence of antibiotics and HMs in water bodies may pose greater health and environmental concerns as HMs can co-select for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, leading to a higher prevalence of antibiotic resistance (ABR) genes/bacteria. This study investigates the co-selection of HMs and ABR in Enterobacteriaceae strains isolated from the polluted urban stretch of the Mula-Mutha R

Re-sensitization of Multidrug-Resistant and Colistin-Resistant Gram-Negative Bacteria to Colistin by Povarov/Doebner-Derived Compounds.

Colistin, typically viewed as the antibiotic of last resort to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria, had fallen out of favor due to toxicity issues. The recent increase in clinical usage of colistin has resulted in colistin-resistant isolates becoming more common. To counter this threat, we have investigated previously reported compounds, HSD07 and HSD17, and developed 13 compounds with more desirable drug-like properties for colistin sensitization against 16 colistin-resistant bacterial strains, three of which harbor the plasmid-borne mobile colistin res
