Effects of fertilizer and low rates of imidacloprid on Adelges tsugae (Hemiptera: Adelgidae).

Healthy hemlock trees, Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière, and hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand (Hemiptera: Adelgidae), populations should favor retention and population growth of adelgid predators such as Laricobius nigrinus Fender (Coleoptera: Derodontidae) and Sasajiscymnus tsugae (Sasaji & McClure) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Eastern hemlock trees between 15 and 38 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) were treated with 0, 10, or 25% of 1.5 g imidacloprid (Merit 75 WP) per 2.5 cm dbh and were either fertilized or not, in a 3 by 2 factorial design. After 2 yr, imidacloprid reduced th

House design modifications reduce indoor resting malaria vector densities in rice irrigation scheme area in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Simple modifications of typical rural house design can be an effective and relatively inexpensive method of reducing indoor mosquito vector densities and consequently decreasing malaria transmission. Public health scientists have shown the potential for house design to protect people against malaria, yet this type of intervention remains virtually ignored. A randomized-controlled study was, therefore, undertaken to determine the effects of this method of vector control on the density of indoor resting malaria vectors in a rice irrigation scheme area in lowlands of western Kenya. Constitutively raised serum concentrations of mast-cell tryptase and severe anaphylactic reactions to Hymenoptera stings.

Anaphylactic IgE-mediated reactions to Hymenoptera stings vary in their severity for reasons that are not clear. We investigated patients with a history of systemic anaphylatic reactions to honeybee or wasp stings. Nine (75%) of 12 patients with raised tryptase concentrations but only 28 (28%) of 102 patients with lower tryptase concentrations, had a history of severe sting reactions (p=0.004). Raised baseline serum concentrations of mast-cell tryptase and mastocytosis are potential risk factors for severe allergic reactions to Hymenoptera venom.

[Introduction of Bacillus sphaericus strain-2362 (GRISELESF) for biological control of malaria vectors in Guatemala].

Malaria continues to be an important health problem in a number of countries of Central and South America where it is considered as a highly prevent endemic disease. The objective of this paper is to assess the entomo-epidemiological impact of a pilot program for the biological control of malaria-transmitting vectors, which was implemented in 1998 in Escuintla, Republic of Guatemala. This program was based on the use of 20,000 L of biolarvicide Bacillus sphaericus- strain-2362 (GRISELESF) which was applied in the 46 localities of highest epidemiological risk at a rate of 10 mL/m2 of effective

Successful application of deltamethrin pour on to cattle in a campaign against tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) in the pastoral zone of Samorogouan, Burkina Faso.

1,500-2,000 head of cattle were treated with deltamethrin 1% Spot On in an area of high tsetse densities, notably of Glossina morsitans submorsitans. After four treatments at monthly intervals, the time between two treatments was increased to two months. 11 months after the commencement of the campaign the fly population had decreased from initially 54.2 flies/trap/day to densities varying between 0.06-2.0 flies/trap/day, mostly G. palpalis gambiensis. Blood-meal analysis showed that this species was surviving in limited areas, mainly feeding on monitor lizards; consequently it is unlikely tha

First large-scale assessment of pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles darlingi (Diptera: Culicidae) in Brazil (2021-2024): a crucial step in informing decision-making in malaria control.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to pose a significant public health threat in northern Brazil. Current control strategies for Anopheles darlingi, the primary malaria vector in the Amazon region, depend on long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) with pyrethroid insecticides. Despite decades of insecticide use, there are very few records of pyrethroid resistance in this mosquito species in Brazil, likely due to a lack of investigations, underscoring the urgent need for further actions. OBJECTIVES: To assess the susceptibility of An. darlingi from all malaria-ende

Permethrin-Treated Baby Wraps for the Prevention of Malaria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major cause of childhood death in sub-Saharan Africa. We leveraged the traditional practice of mothers carrying children on their backs in cloth wraps to assess whether treating the wraps with an insect repellent might provide a layer of protection against malaria. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted in Uganda, we enrolled adult women with a child who was 6 to 18 months of age. The mother-child pairs were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to use permethrin-treated wraps (intervention group) or sham-treated wraps (control grou

Seasonal biting pattern of Simulium damnosum s.l and its implications on onchocerciasis treatment with ivermectin.

BACKGROUND: The current control strategy adopted by African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) is the mass distribution of ivermectin in all endemic areas for between 12-15 years. One of the major obstacles of the strategy, is the ability of the fly to migrate long distances and this brings about the possibility of flies migrating from uncontrolled areas to controlled areas. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of annual ivermectin treatment of onchocerciasis and to ascertain the seasonality of transmission and its impact on the current control strategy in the forest zone around a dam in

Intraguild interactions of aphidophagous predators in fields: effect of Coccinella septempunctata and Episyrphus balteatus occurrence on aphid infested plants.

Intraguild relations between beneficial insects have become a major research topic in biological pest control. In order to understand the intraguild competitions between aphidophagous populations in natural conditions, a field experiment was carried out in the experimental farm of the Gembloux Agricultural University. As biological control of pests involve a community of diverse natural enemies, this experiment firstly aimed to assess the aphidophagous predator diversity and abundance in green pea (Pisum sativum) field and secondly to investigate the impact of the large natural occurrence of C

Onchocerca lienalis: comparison of techniques for the cryopreservation of microfilariae within skin-snips or free of host tissues.

Onchocera lienalis microfilariae (mf) were cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen within skin-snips using methanol as a cryoprotectant and their viability evaluated and compared to mf cryopreserved free of host tissues using ethanediol as a cryoprotectant. Despite an initial delay in emergence, the methanol technique did not significantly affect the total numbers of mf emerging from skin-snips of various sizes (3.3-59.81 mg) compared to untreated controls over a 6 h period. Following thawing, the initial motility index (MI) scores of mf cryopreserved by either method were not significantly different

Dauer juvenile recovery transcriptome of two contrasting EMS mutants of the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora.

The entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, symbiotically associated with enterobacteria of the genus Photorhabdus, is a biological control agent against many insect pests. Dauer Juveniles (DJ) of this nematode are produced in industrial-scale bioreactors up to 100 m3 in liquid culture processes lasting approximately 11 days. A high DJ yield (> 200,000 DJ·mL-1) determines the success of the process. To start the mass production, a DJ inoculum proceeding from a previous monoxenic culture is added to pre-cultured (24 h) Photorhabdus bacteria. Within minutes after contact with th

Aspergillus fumigatus G-Protein Coupled Receptors GprM and GprJ Are Important for the Regulation of the Cell Wall Integrity Pathway, Secondary Metabolite Production, and Virulence.

G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are extracellular signaling receptors that sense environmental cues. Fungi sense their environment primarily through GPCR-mediated signaling pathways, which, in turn, regulate fungal development, metabolism, virulence, and mycotoxin biosynthesis. Aspergillus fumigatus is an important human pathogen that causes aspergillosis, a heterogeneous group of diseases that present a wide range of clinical manifestations. Here, we investigate in detail the role of the GPCRs GprM and GprJ in growth and gene expression. GprM and GprJ are important for melanin production

Chemical Treatments Tested Against Xylella fastidiosa: Strategies, Successes and Limitations.

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for severe diseases in several commercially significant crops, including olive, grapevine, citrus and almond. Its management is particularly challenging due to its transmission via widespread vector insects, its ability to form biofilms, its high genetic diversity and, sometimes, latent symptoms. Current control strategies focus on integrated and preventive approaches, including the use of resistant varieties, agronomic practices, and vector control through chemical and biological methods. Direct control of the bacterium has alwa

Drosophila melanogaster Limostatin and Its Human Ortholog Promote West Nile Virus Infection.

The arbovirus West Nile virus (WNV) is a danger to global health. Spread primarily by mosquitoes, WNV causes about 2000 cases per year in the United States. The natural mosquito immune response controls viral replication so that the host survives but can still transmit the virus. Using the genetically malleable Drosophila melanogaster model, we previously dissected innate immune pathways used to control WNV infection. Specifically, we showed that insulin/IGF-1 signaling (IIS) activates a JAK/STAT-mediated immune response that reduces WNV. However, how factors that regulate IIS in insects contr

The ecdysone receptor regulates several key physiological factors in Anopheles funestus.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a devastating disease, transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes infected with Plasmodium parasites. Current insecticide-based strategies exist to control the spread of malaria by targeting vectors. However, the increase in insecticide resistance in vector populations hinder the efficacy of these methods. It is, therefore, essential to develop novel vector control methods that efficiently target transmission reducing factors such as vector density and competence. A possible vector control candidate gene, the ecdysone receptor, regulates longevity, reproduction, immunity
