Tobacco Smoking, Lung Cancer, and Therapy in Iraq: Current Perspective.

Tobacco smoking is a research topic of high interest to the public health in Iraq. Although Iraq is a country with a high percentage of smokers, we noticed the dearth of adequate studies and programs to deal with this problem. The percentage of smokers exceed 30% of the population and smoking problem becomes a permanent habit in adults and young people. The problems associated with tobacco smoking behavior related to individuals' post-traumatic stress disorder following post-war conflicts, and the social and cultural environment. The health consequences of tobacco smoking can harm almost every

Mathematical model of intimal thickening in atherosclerosis: vessel stenosis as a free boundary problem.

Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the artery characterized by an expansion of the intimal region. Intimal thickening is usually attributed to the migration of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the surrounding media and proliferation of SMCs already present in the intima. Intimal expansion can give rise to dangerous events such as stenosis (leading to stroke) or plaque rupture (leading to myocardial infarction). In this paper we propose and study a mathematical model of intimal thickening, posed as a free boundary problem. Intimal thickening is driven by damage to the endothelium, res

Problems of resistant thrombolysis and early recurrent thrombosis in streptokinase therapy.

Problems of resistant thrombolysis and early rethrombosis during and immediately after streptokinase therapy have been studied with sequential phlebography in 39 patients. Early rethrombosis and resistant thrombolysis were found to correlate with the behavior of plasminogen and fibrinogen to streptokinase. Anticoagulants given during streptokinase therapy do not seem to affect these problems in a dramatic way.

Psychosocial Outcomes in Autistic Children Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on autistic children's psychosocial outcomes have shown mixed results. In the current study we aimed to gain a better insight into the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic by comparing psychosocial outcomes collected pre-pandemic with data collected during the pandemic. We used the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to examine change over time in psychosocial outcomes of autistic children from pre-pandemic (T0) to lockdown I (T1) and lockdown II (T2) in the Netherlands. We expected a deterioration in psychosocial outcomes. There were 224 pa

Sleep problems in fragile X syndrome: Cross-sectional analysis of a large clinic-based cohort.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading cause of inherited intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, is associated with multiple neurobehavioral abnormalities including sleep difficulties. Nonetheless, frequency, severity, and consequences of sleep problems are still unclear. The Fragile X Online Registry with Accessible Research Database (FORWARD-version-3), including Clinician Report and Parent Report forms, was analyzed for frequency, severity, relationship with behavioral problems, and impact of sleep difficulties in a mainly pediatric cohort. A focused evaluation of sleep apnea

Protective factors promoting resilience in the relation between child sexual victimization and internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

Sexual victimization has been one of the most frequently studied forms of child victimization. Its effects are common and diverse; however, not all children and youth exposed to sexual victimization eventually develop adjustment problems. A total of 1105 children and youth (590 male and 515 female) aged between 12 and 17 from northeastern Spain were assessed regarding their experiences of sexual victimization, symptoms of psychopathology, and protective factors. The results showed that all forms of sexual victimization were associated with higher levels of emotional and behavioral problems. Ho

Empirically supported psychological treatments: The challenges of comorbid psychiatric and behavioral disorders in people with intellectual disability.

This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on psychological interventions with empirical evidence of efficacy in treating common psychiatric and behavioral disorders in people with intellectual disability (ID) at all stages of their life. We begin with a brief presentation of what is meant by psychiatric and behavioral disorders in this population, along with an explanation of some of the factors that contribute to the increased psychosocial vulnerability of this group to present with these problems. We then conduct a review of empirically supported psychological therapies used to treat

A comparison of repetitive behaviors in Aspergers Disorder and high functioning autism.

In this study we compared 33 IQ and age matched pairs of individuals with Aspergers Disorder (ASP) and high functioning autism (HFA) on measures of repetitive behavior. On the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), the ASP and HFA groups showed no differences in RBS-R Intensity score (severity) score or Frequency score (number of problems present). This suggests that the two groups are similar with respect to the intensity or severity of repetitive behaviors and the presence of repetitive behaviors. At the item level there were no differences on scales typically associated with autism (Ste

Use of clomipramine to treat ritualistic stereotypic motor behavior in three dogs.

Atypical, stereotypic motor and locomotor behavior was observed in 3 dogs. In 1 dog, the behavior included circling, vocalization, and snapping; in another, circling associated with pica and aerophagia; and in a third, gradually intensifying locomotor behavior stimulated by bright light. This behavior interfered with normal interaction between their owners and the dogs, and has been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorders. Treatment with clomipramine, along with other psychotropic medications and behavioral modification, suppressed the inappropriate behavior in all dogs; in 2 of the 3 d

Clinical behavioral pharmacology: methods for evaluating medications and contingency management.

We evaluated methods for comparing the effects of dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), thioridazine (Mellaril), and contingency management in the control of severe behavior problems. A reversal design was used in which medications were systematically titrated and assessed in unstructured as well as structured settings with three clients. Subsequently, behavioral procedures including timeout, differential reinforcement of other behavior, and visual screening, were used in a multiple-baseline design across settings. The assessment and design methods were useful in comparing the interventions. Dextroam

Associations Between Early Low-Level Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Executive Function at Age 8 Years.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether exposure to tobacco smoke during early brain development is linked with later problems in behavior and executive function. STUDY DESIGN: We studied 239 children in a prospective birth cohort. We measured tobacco exposures by caregiver report and serum cotinine 3 times during pregnancy and 4 times during childhood. We used linear regression to examine the association between prenatal and childhood serum cotinine concentrations and behavior (the Behavior Assessment System for Children-2) and executive function (the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functio

Functional Activation During a Cognitive Control Task in Healthy Youth Specific to Externalizing or Internalizing Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Externalizing behaviors are negative behaviors expressed outwardly, including rule breaking, aggression, and risk taking; internalizing behaviors are expressed inwardly, including depression, withdrawal, and anxiety. Such behavior can cause problems in early life and predict difficulties across the lifespan. There is evidence for a relationship between executive function and both externalizing and internalizing. However, although these behaviors occur along a spectrum, there is little neuroimaging research on this relationship in typically developing youth. METHODS: We assessed 41

Suicidality among gambling helpline callers: A consideration of the role of financial stress and conflict.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High rates of suicidal ideation and attempts secondary to gambling are well established among those with gambling disorders. The present study explores potential risk factors for suicidal ideation and/attempt among a sample of help-line callers. METHODS: Participants (N = 202) completed measures assessing demographics; gambling behavior; and financial, family/social, employment, substance use, and legal difficulties related to gambling. Bivariate analyses, logistic regression, and mediation analyses were used to explore relationship between predictors and risk of su

Unilateral hearing loss in children: speech-language and school performance.

UNLABELLED: PROBLEM/OBJECTIVES: Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) in children is a relatively common problem often identified by newborn screening or school screening. This review summarizes the outcomes of a large study of children with UHL which identified risk factors for educational problems, describes the results of pilot studies of intervention, and proposes guidelines for interventions and future studies. METHODS: Cohort of children age 6-12 years with UHL was compared to their siblings with normal hearing on the primary outcomes of cognition, achievement, and language. Secondary outcomes

Homeless youths and young adults in Los Angeles: prevalence of mental health problems and the relationship between mental health and substance abuse disorders.

Although understanding of the subsistence patterns, service utilization, and HIV-risk behaviors of homeless youths and young adults in increasing, relatively little is known about the epidemiology of mental health problems in this group or the relationships between mental health problems and substance use. This study measured symptoms of depression, low self-esteem, ADHD, suicidality, self-injurious behavior (SIB), and drug and alcohol use disorder in a sample of homeless youth and young adults living in Hollywood, CA. Results indicated extremely high prevalences of mental health problems as c

Remote treatment of sleep-related trichotillomania and trichophagia.

We used a biobehavioral treatment consisting of melatonin and a standardized bed and wake time to decrease one girl's head and mouth touches associated with sleep-related trichotillomania and trichophagia. We remotely coached the girl's caregiver to implement all procedures and monitored response to treatment using a DropCam Pro video camera equipped with night-vision capabilities. Head and mouth touches decreased, and her sleep pattern improved with the combination of treatment strategies. We discuss our use of a novel mode of service delivery to treat sleep-related problem behavior.

Effects of gamma-hydroxybutyrate on punished responding in pigeons.

The abuse of drugs such gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) has become a serious drug abuse problem in recent years; however, data on the behavioral effects of GHB are limited. Drugs that increase punished behavior are frequently subject to abuse. The purpose of the present experiments was to determine whether GHB increases punished responding in pigeons as might be predicted on the basis of its depressant activity and abuse liability in humans. GHB increased punished responding to an extent comparable to pentobarbital, suggesting that GHB has antianxiety effects that might contribute to its abuse lia

Letter dyslexia in a letter-by-letter reader.

We describe a letter-by-letter patient who produced misreading errors in both letters in isolation and in words. All errors were visual in nature. We hypothesized an access deficit to the abstract visual representation of letters that prevents letter identification. This deficit could account for the patient's letter-by-letter behavior, since each letter constituted a potential identification problem. An access deficit, moreover, could also explain the patient's letter visual errors. In access processing, in fact, the letters sharing common structural features in their abstract representations

ECT and Twin Pregnancy.

The combination of pregnancy and affective psychosis produces a complex treatment problem. The mother and fetus can experience significant risks from the disorganized behavior associated with mental illness as well as from the medical treatments for the illness. ECT has been recommended as a safe alternative. This article reports on ECT used for a patient pregnant with twins. Multiple gestation compounds the problems encountered with single pregnancies. The report details techniques to monitor fetal well-being. The case illustrates the safe use of ECT when the fetuses and the pregnancy itself

Psychosocial and respiratory disease related to severe bladder dysfunction and non-monosymptomatic enuresis.

OBJECTIVE: Complicated bladder dysfunctions (BD) (associated with infections/urological complications or irresponsive to treatment) are a small proportion of all cases, but are highly morbid, clinically and psychosocially. Our aim is to describe a cohort of complicated pediatric BD, using subgroup analysis to compare presentations and responses to treatment among genders, age groups, and patients with or without non-monosymptomatic enuresis (NME). We also relate severe BD to other health conditions or to social/behavioral problems and report treatment results. METHOD: Thirty-five cases of com
