BACKGROUND: Facial synkinesis (FS) is a distressing sequela of facial palsy (FP) characterized by involuntary, simultaneous movements of facial muscles occurring during voluntary facial expressions. Treatment of synkinesis is challenging, and preventive methods are needed.
AIM: This study evaluated the efficacy of physical facial nerve rehabilitation (PFNR) therapy alone vs. PNFR with eyelid surgery to correct lagophthalmos and prevent the onset of synkinesis.
METHODS: Twenty five outpatients were randomized to receive either PFNR alone (neuromuscular retraining and Kabat proprioceptive neur

Sports-related concussions (SRCs) are associated with neuromuscular control deficits in athletes following return to play. However, the connection between SRC and potentially disrupted neural regulation of lower extremity motor control has not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate brain activity and connectivity during a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) lower extremity motor control task (bilateral leg press) in female adolescent athletes with a history of SRC. Nineteen female adolescent athletes with a history of SRC and nineteen uninjured (without a hist

Objective.Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has been gaining momentum as a non-invasive rehabilitation approach to restore movement to paralyzed muscles after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, its low selectivity limits the types of movements that can be enabled and, thus, its potential applications in rehabilitation.Approach.In this cross-over study design, we investigated whether muscle recruitment selectivity of individual muscles could be enhanced by multielectrode configurations of tSCS in 16 neurologically intact individuals. We hypothesized that due to the segmental innerva

BACKGROUND: Acute rupture of the fibular ligament complex is one of the commonest injuries in sports. Prospective randomized trials in the 1980s led to a paradigm shift from primary surgical repair to conservative functional treatment.
METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses on surgical versus conservative treatment from the years 1983 to 2023.
RESULTS: 10 of 11 prospective randomized trials of surgical versus conservative treatment conducted between 198

(1) Background: Inflammatory processes in the thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) lead to thickening, compaction, and fibrosis and are thought to contribute to the development of nonspecific low back pain (nLBP). The blood flow (BF) of fascial tissue may play a critical role in this process, as it may promote hypoxia-induced inflammation. The primary objective of the study was to examine the immediate effects of a set of myofascial release (MFR) techniques on the BF of lumbar myofascial tissue. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the influence of TLF morphology (TLFM), physical activity (PA), and

OBJECTIVE: Kinesio taping (KT) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are interventions mainly used in clinical settings to improve gait after stroke. Lower-leg KT using the concept of PNF (PNF-KT) has been shown to enhance the recovery of gait speed in patients with stroke. But, the effect of PNF-KT on the ankle movement and gait parameters in stroke patients is unclear. We aimed to investigate the immediate effects of PNF-KT on ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DF-ROM) and gait parameters in patients with stroke with foot drop.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the A-KT condition, t

Vestibular information is ubiquitous and often processed jointly with visual, somatosensory and proprioceptive information. Among the cortical brain regions associated with human vestibular processing, area OP2 in the parietal operculum has been proposed as vestibular core region. However, delineating responses uniquely to vestibular stimulation in this region using neuroimaging is challenging for several reasons: First, the parietal operculum is a cytoarchitectonically heterogeneous region responding to multisensory stimulation. Second, artificial vestibular stimulation evokes confounding som

Vision is known to improve human postural responses to external perturbations. This study investigates the role of vision for the responses to continuous pseudorandom support surface translations in the body sagittal plane in three visual conditions: with the eyes closed (EC), in stroboscopic illumination (EO/SI; only visual position information) and with eyes open in continuous illumination (EO/CI; position and velocity information) with the room as static visual scene (or the interior of a moving cabin, in some of the trials). In the frequency spectrum of the translation stimulus we distingu

BACKGROUND: The frequency and causes of underdiagnosis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) are uncertain. We aimed to assess the frequency and electroclinical features of pre-referral CIDP underdiagnosis and the duration of delay prior to diagnosis and treatment initiation in a tertiary specialist clinic.
METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 60 consecutive patients attending our Inflammatory Neuropathy Service, between 2015 and 2019, with a final diagnosis of treatment-responsive definite/probable CIDP. We reviewed the clinical and electrophysiological data in ligh

Phantom limb pain (PLP) may be relieved using a visual representation of an intact limb. However, patients with distorted (telescoped) phantoms seem unable to associate with visualizations of intact limbs. A virtual arm visualization was matched to the individual's phantom perception and controlled in an augmented reality (AR) intervention. Seven PLP participants with telescoped phantoms performed 8 supervised home-based AR-training sessions (45 minutes each) within 2 weeks. The virtual arm was superimposed in AR onto their residual limb and controlled using electromyography from the residual

OBJECTIVE: To uncover possible impairments of walking and dynamic postural stability in patients with primary orthostatic tremor (OT).
METHODS: Spatiotemporal gait characteristics were quantified in 18 patients with primary OT (mean age 70.5 ± 5.9 years, 10 females) and 18 age-matched healthy controls. One-third of patients reported disease-related fall events. Walking performance was assessed on a pressure-sensitive carpet under seven conditions: walking at preferred, slow, and maximal speed, with head reclination or eyes closed, and while performing a cognitive or motor dual-task paradigm.

Lateral ligament tears, also known as high-grade ankle sprains, are common, debilitating, and usually heal slowly. Ten to thirty percent of patients continue to suffer from chronic pain and ankle instability even after 3 to 9 months. Previously, we showed that the recombinant human amelogenin (rHAM+ ) induced regeneration of fully transected rat medial collateral ligament, a common proof-of-concept model. Our aim was to evaluate whether rHAM+ can regenerate torn ankle calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), an important component of the lateral ankle stabilizers. Right CFLs of Sabra rats were transect

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurological manifestations have been identified in the context of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Previous case reports highlighted the association between AIH and sensory neuronopathy (SN). Despite that, little is known about the frequency of AIH-related SN and its clinical/neurophysiological profile. Moreover, it is not clear whether SN is an AIH-specific manifestation or related to chronic liver damage.
METHODS: Seventy consecutive AIH patients were enrolled and their characteristics were compared with 52 consecutive patients with chronic active hepatitis B. All subjec

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is the most common form of focal dystonia. It is not known exactly whether abnormal head postures in cervical dystonia cause balance problems. Dual-tasking is a common every-day life situation.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate postural stability (PS) in patients with CD and the effect of cognitive task on PS. As a secondary aim, we evaluated the effect of onabotulinum toxin A (BoNT) injection on PS.
METHODS: A total of 24 patients with CD who were on BoNT treatment for at least one year and 23 healthy controls were included. Posturographic analyses were carr

What triggered the emergence of uniquely human behaviors (language, religion, music) some 100,000 years ago? A non-circular, speculative theory based on the mother-infant relationship is presented. Infant "cuteness" evokes the infant schema and motivates nurturing; the analogous mother schema (MS) is a multimodal representation of the carer from the fetal/infant perspective, motivating fearless trust. Prenatal MS organizes auditory, proprioceptive, and biochemical stimuli (voice, heartbeat, footsteps, digestion, body movements, biochemicals) that depend on maternal physical/emotional state. In
