Third-generation cephalosporins: a critical evaluation.

Six third-generation cephalosporins--cefotaxime, moxalactam, cefoperazone, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone, and cefmenoxime--are reviewed; covered … the third-generation cephalosporins, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Citrobacter diversus, Proteus, and Morganella. About 50% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates are susceptible. Only moxalactam has good activity against Bacteriodes fragilis. The pharmacokinetic profiles of the six agents reveal some important differences. The half-life of ceftria …

A clinical evaluation of a sensor to detect blockage due to crystalline biofilm formation on indwelling urinary catheters.

OBJECTIVE: To test the performance and acceptability of an early warning sensor to predict encrustation and blockage of long-term indwelling urinary catheters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In all, 17 long-term indwelling catheter users, 15 'blockers' and two 'non-blockers' (controls) were recruited; 11 participants were followed prospectively until catheter change, three withdrew early and three did not start. Two sensors were placed in series between the catheter and the urine bag at catheter change. The sensor nearest the bag was changed at the same time as the bag change (weekly); the sensor near

Bacterial pneumonia in the elderly.

Bacterial pneumonia in the elderly is common, and causes more morbidity and mortality than in the younger adult. As patients live longer with more underlying disease and more iatrogenic disease, the incidence of nosocomial pneumonia will probably rise. Adequate sterilization of inhalation therapy equipment can reduce the risk of gram-negative nosocomial pneumonia. Methods to prevent colonization and microaspiration need to be investigated. The development of a gram-negative vaccine using Salmonella RE or E. coli J5 mutant would augur well for the future. Most important, the elderly patient wit

Comparison of mesh infection management following ventral hernia repair with poly-4-hydroxybutyrate, synthetic, and biologic mesh: a retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Mesh infections are a feared complication of ventral hernia repair. This retrospective review compares infection characteristics … nosuppression (33% vs. 0% vs. 0%). The bacterial profile of these mesh infections includes E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Phasix group, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus faecium, and Streptococcus in the synthetic group, and Staph aureus in the biologic group. Phasix infections required a mean of 36 d …

Isolation and characterization of midgut microbiota in Anopheles mosquitoes from areas under varying insecticide pressure and malaria transmission settings of Ethiopia.

Investigating the composition and diversity of Anopheles midgut microbiota is essential for understanding vector-pathogen interactions, inse … ates. Eleven bacterial genera were detected, dominated by Staphylococcus (32%), Klebsiella (17.5%), Proteus (11.4%), and Bacillus (11.7%). Anopheles species appear to be a key driver of midgut microbiota abundance (Wald χ² = 8.33, df = 3, p = 0.040), with insecticide survivors also showing numerically higher (63%, n = 113) culturable bacterial count and g …
