Methanol-water (4:1, v/v) crude extracts (50 mg mL(-1)) of 25 Jamaican medicinal plants were screened in vitro for anthelmintic activity using infective third-stage larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. The most effective extract was further chemically scrutinized to isolate and identify the source of the bioactivity, and the efficacy of this compound was compared with ivermectin. Eosin exclusion (0.1 mg mL(-1)) served as the indicator of mortality in all bioassays. A crude extract of Eryngium foetidum (Apiaceae) was significantly (Probit Analysis, P<0.05) more potent than the other plant extra

Carbohydrates of pathogen antigens have been disrupted by periodate oxidation, in order to reduce nonspecific bindings and improve serodiagnosis of parasite infections. In the present study, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was carried out with filariform larvae antigen treated, or not treated, with sodium metaperiodate. Groups of sera from patients with Strongyloides stercoralis infection, with other intestinal parasites and a normal control, were used. The oxidation of Strongyloides stercoralis glycosylated epitopes reduced the seroreactivity of sera from patients with S. sterco

OBJECTIVE: Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted intestinal nematode that has been estimated to infect at least 60 million people, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Strongyloides infection has been described in immunosupressed patients with lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus etc. Our case who has rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and bronchial asthma was treated with low dose steroids and methotrexate.
METHODS: A 68 year old woman has bronchial asthma for 55 years and also diagnosed RA 7 years ago. She received immunusupressive agents including methotrexate and

Serological analyses of sera from patients with a typical picture of filarial tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) and sera from patients from a region non-endemic for filariasis harbouring intestinal helminths, as Ascaris lumbricoides and Strongyloids stercoralis, revealed equally high titers of IgG4, usually considered diagnostic for filariasis. Ultrathin sections of adult worms of W. bancrofti embedded in the hydrophilic resin L.R. White were incubated with sera from patients with a typical picture of filarial tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) and sera from patients of a region that wa

Follow-up stool examinations were carried out on two groups of the subjects who were screened negative (group 1) or positive (group 2) for Strongyloides stercoralis by the agar plate culture. This technique could detect S. stercoralis larvae in 87.5-96.4% of the subjects in group 2 and 0-5.9% of the subjects in group 1 on various days of the eight-week and four-week follow-up periods, respectively. The detection rate on each day of examination was not statistically different from that on the first day in both groups. Quantitative measurement of S. stercoralis larvae excreted in the feces of th

The efficacy of agar-plate culture has been evaluated for the detection of Strongyloides stercoralis and hookworm, compared with direct smear, the formalin-ether sedimentation technique and the filter-paper method. Of 1085 stool samples from the routine laboratory service at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, 241 samples harboured S. stercoralis, 153 hookworm and 2 Rhabditis hominis. The recovery rate of S. stercoralis by agar-plate culture is significantly superior to the other methods (P < 0.005). The ratios of positive results from the methods used to the total number of S. st

The prevalence of intestinal parasite infection among program participants of the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for the period 1986-1987 was estimated, and demographic factors associated with increased risk for infection were identified. The overall prevalence of infection was 7.3%. The two most prevalent infections were Enterobius vermicularis (4.5%) and strongyloides stercoralis (1.2%). Males and individuals with severe or profound mental retardation were twice as likely to be positive for the presence of intestinal parasites as females and indivi

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and response to therapy of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in immigrant patients with asthma from areas endemic for Strongyloides.
DESIGN AND INTERVENTIONS: In all patients, we performed a complete history and physical examination, complete blood cell counts (CBC), S stercoralis serologic tests, spirometry, and evaluated three stool samples for ova and parasites. Patients treated for S stercoralis infection had follow-up CBC, spirometry, serologic tests, and at least three additional stool examinations to confirm eradication of the parasite.

Giardia intestinalis (15.2%) and Hymenolepis nana (20.4%) were the two most frequently reported species in a study of intestinal parasites from 1683 Aboriginal people in Western Australia. Concurrent infection with the two species was statistically significant in the 0 to three years age group only (P < 0.01), and it is suggested that in older age groups the presence of one of these parasites may in some way inhibit the development of the other. Hymenolepis nana infection was more common in males than in females (P < 0.001). Hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis infections were confined to th

Ninety-, 60-, and 40-percent population coverages with levamisole 2.5 mg/kg of body weight were compared for their effects on Ascaris lumbricoides, ancylostoma, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Trichuris trichiura infections. They were shown to be effective in maintaining a reduced prevalence of A. lumbricoides in the treated subjects for 9, 6, and 3 months, respectively. Nine months after treatment, the prevalence of ascariasis was still lower than before treatment both in the levamisole and in the control subjects, regardless of the population coverage. This was probably because the egg output

In 1970, 250,000 Spanish-speaking persons resided in Chicago, 80,000 of whom were Puerto Rican. Because migration to Chicago is constantly occurring from areas where intestinal parasites are endemic, a survey was conducted in a predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhood to determine the prevalence of these parasites and to provide impetus for further case finding and treatment programs. The survey was part of an epidemiologic and cutreach workers going door-to-door obtained histories, hematocrits, and single stool specimens from 358 individuals. An overall intestinal parasite prevalence rate of 1

A survey of gastrointestinal nematodes in Georgia cattle was conducted from 1968 through 1973 from actual worm counts from viscera of 145 slaughtered beef cattle or from egg counts made from fecal samples from 3,273 beef and 100 dairy cattle. Beef cattle were grouped as calves, yearlings, and cows. Dairy cattle were grouped as calves, replacement heifers, and cows. Results of fecal examinations positive; 99.5, 99.3, 99.6, and 41.2% of the calves, yearlings, drylot calves, and cows, respectively, were infected with nematodes. Seventy-four percent of the eggs counted were of the Cooperia-Osterta

BACKGROUND: Rare infections that are atypical for Central Europe are increasingly relevant due to global migration, climate change, and the widespread use of immunosuppressive therapies. Diagnosing such infections is often delayed or missed entirely because conventional testing relies on prior clinical suspicion and region-specific test panels. Hypothesis-free metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) offers a promising diagnostic strategy in these cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) infection with hyperinfection syndrome i
