BACKGROUND: There are only a few publications in the medical literature reporting on complication rates in proximal hypospadias surgery, particularly with regard to long-term follow-up.
METHODS: Over a 17.5-year period, we operated 100 patients with penoscrotal, scrotal and perineal hypospadias. Sixty-four had a single-stage repair, including 15 who received a buccal mucosa inlay "Snodgraft" repair. Failure to repair the traumatic injuries of the lower urinary tract with loss of urethral sphincteric function usually puts forward the subject of urinary diversion. Ten males and five females presented with extensive urethral damage and with or without vesical fistulas. All attempts of repair were exhausted before the decision of diversion was planned. Continent urinary diversion using the modified rectal bladder (the augmented and valved rectum) was utilized. The procedure entailed functional isolation of the rectum without terminal colostomy and depended on colorectal intussuscepted valve.

This paper presents the results of a series of 10 continent urinary valves performed in the urology department of Ibnou-Rochd hospital in Casablanca according to an original technique between 1991 and 1993. In seven studies of complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections, 285 patients were treated with norfloxacin 400 mg b.i.d. for 7-90 days. The majority of the patients were men, and many were elderly. Underlying diseases included nephrolithiasis, pyelonephritis, prostatism, bacterial prostatitis, prostate cancer, retroperitoneal fibrosis, quadriplegia/paraplegia, neurogenic bladder, and urethral stricture. We investigated 112 patients with end stage renal disease. Clinical evaluations included cystoscopy, cystometry, voiding cystography, bilateral retrograde pyelograms, history and physical examination, and appropriate serum and urinary studies. Of the 112 patients 28 (25 per cent) had significant abnormalities of the urinary tracts.
