Towards the automatic detection of activities of daily living using eye-movement and accelerometer data with neural networks.

Early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, improves treatment and care outcomes for patients. Early signs of cognitive decline can be detected using functional scales, which are written records completed by a clinician or carer, detailing a patient's capability to perform routine activities of daily living. For example, tasks requiring planning, such as meal preparation, are some of the earliest affected by early mild cognitive impairment. In this article, we describe work towards the development of a system to automatically discriminate and objectively quantif

[Update on central oculomotor disorders and nystagmus].

The diagnosis of ocular motor disorders and the different forms of a nystagmus is based on a systematic clinical examination of all types of eye movements: eye position, spontaneous nystagmus, range of eye movements, smooth pursuit, saccades, gaze-holding function, vergence, optokinetic nystagmus, as well as testing of the function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and visual fixation suppression of the VOR. Relevant anatomical structures are the midbrain, pons, medulla, cerebellum, and cortex. There is a simple clinical rule: vertical and torsional eye movements are generated in the midbra

[Balance disorders in the elderly].

In the elderly patient, instability is a syndrome in which a loss of balance, during ambulation or while standing, can give rise to falls, with consequent disability and morbidity. Maintaining the correct static and dynamic balance is known to be the result of the synergetic functioning of different systems. In old age, however, the efficiency of these mechanisms is impaired because of the physiological process of aging, which affects all of the organs and systems of the human body. Besides that, different concomitant causes such as cardiovascular and dysmetabolic pathologies, chronic pharmaco

Psychophysical scaling of circular vection (CV) produced by optokinetic (OKN) motion: individual differences and effects of practice.

Vection (V) refers to the compelling visual illusion of self-motion experienced by stationary individuals when viewing moving visual surrounds. The phenomenon is of theoretical interest because of its relevance for understanding the neural basis of ordinary self-motion perception, and of practical importance because it is the experience that makes simulation, virtual reality displays, and entertainment devices more vicarious. This experiment was performed to address whether an optokinetically induced vection illusion exhibits monotonic and stable psychometric properties and whether individuals

Distinguishing pseudoprogression from true tumor growth after stereotactic surgery in vestibular schwannoma: a volumetric and clinical trajectory analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) often shows transient post-radiosurgery swelling ("pseudoprogression," PP) that mimics true progression (TP). We validated volumetric rules to separate PP from TP and linked growth patterns to clinical outcome. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed 259 sporadic VS cases treated with single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (2012-2024). SRS was delivered with a median margin dose of 12 Gy, prescribed to the institutional peripheral isodose line, using a median of 5 isocentres. Tumours were manually segmented on serial MRIs ≥ 24 months. PP was defined as

Ocular Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potential Assists in the Differentiation of Multiple System Atrophy From Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) can help in assessing otolithic neural pathway in the brainstem, which may also contribute to the cardiovascular autonomic function. Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with altered VEMP responses; however, the associations between VEMP abnormalities and multiple system atrophy (MSA) remain unknown. Therefore, we compared the extent of otolith dysfunction using ocular (oVEMP) and cervical VEMPs between patients with MSA and PD. METHODS: We analyzed the clinical features, VEMP, and head-up tilt table test (HUT) findings using the Fino
