Acyclovir is a new antiviral agent which is highly active against herpesviruses in vitro and in laboratory animals. Twenty-three cancer patients with cutaneous and/or systemic herpes zoster or herpes simplex infections were treated with parenteral acyclovir. All had received previous specific treatment for their malignant disease and ten had undergone bone-marrow transplantation. The methods of indirct haemagglutination (IH) and precipitation in gel (ID) were employed to test the level of varicella-zoster (VZ) antibodies in an experimental batch of zoster gammaglobulin (ZIG). Clinical and pathological data from eight cases of acute haemorrhagic leucoencephalitis (AHL) confirm the previously documented devastating features of this disease. Data from 30 cases of perivenous encephalitis (PVE) associated with viral diseases reveal pathological changes ranging from lymphocytic cuffing of vessels to severe vasculitis similar to the vasculitis of AHL. Relatively few cases show demyelination as a prominent feature. The pathological changes are unrelated to the type of underlying disease with the exception that the pathology of 'post-rubella' encephalitis tends to be mild.

OBJECTIVE: To determine seroprotection for the vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and hepatitis B among new employees seen at a Victorian tertiary hospital staff clinic.
METHODS: Employees who presented to the staff clinic for immunisation assessment between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2013 were included. Demographic data, self-reported disease history and previous vaccination status were reviewed retrospectively to determine impact on serological results.
