Implementing polygenic risk-based breast cancer screening across European health systems: insights from the BRIGHT project.

INTRODUCTION: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) offer a novel means of stratifying breast cancer risk, with the potential to personalize screening protocols and measures, and thus improve early detection. However, their implementation in real-world settings remains poorly understood. This study, as part of the BRIGHT project, investigates how PRS-based breast cancer screening is being piloted, adapted, and resisted across five European countries, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and France, drawing on a combination of implementation science and business model theory. METHODS: We employed a multipl

Building Health Equity Research Capacity in Myanmar Through a Virtual, Mentor-Based Training Program.

Background: In Myanmar, the COVID-19 pandemic and political unrest beginning in 2021 exacerbated longstanding health inequities and disrupted health services, universities, and research governance, rendering in-person research training infeasible when locally led health equity research was urgently needed. Objectives: To describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a fully virtual, mentor-based health equity research training program in Myanmar. Methods: Supported by the Fogarty International Center/NIH, a one-year virtual training program integrated weekly virtual Zoom sessions, asy

Self-reported hepatitis B vaccination uptake and associated factors among adults in a tertiary hospital, Nasarawa State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine. In Nigeria, adult vaccination coverage and completion rates are not well characterized within hospital-based populations. METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,200 adults attending Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Data on socio-demographics, HBV-related knowledge, attitudes, perceived barriers, vaccination uptake, and completion were collected using a structured question

Aviation accident investigation analysis methodologies used by 12 government Safety Investigation Authorities.

INTRODUCTION: Leading government Safety Investigation Authorities (SIAs) that investigate major aviation accidents are members of the International Transportation Safety Association (ITSA). Investigation analysis methodology details are rarely included on SIA websites, in final accident reports, shared with peers, or specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Some 'New View' safety researchers assume SIAs don't use systemic methodologies and that accident investigation has little value. Because of the sensitivity of SIA work and need to prioritize safety value from avai

Long-Term Post-Bariatric Surgical Outcomes for Aeromedical Certification Consideration.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity represents a growing concern in the aviation environment due to its association with cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and obstructive sleep apnea, conditions that may compromise aeromedical certification and long-term medical fitness for flight duties. Although bariatric surgery (BS) effectively reduces obesity-related comorbidities, its long-term implications for pilots remain insufficiently characterized from an aeromedical perspective. This systematic review evaluates long-term health outcomes following BS relevant to flight personnel performance, safety, and

Trends in surgical management of hypospadias in Germany: A nationwide analysis on legislative and guideline changes.

BACKGROUND: Recent years have seen significant changes in the management approach for hypospadias in Germany, influenced by legislative modifications (German Civil Code §1631e), as proximal hypospadias are listed as DSD 46 X, Y, resulting in a family court decision prior to surgery. According to the revised clinical guidelines (S2k guideline, first published 2016, updated 2021), surgical treatment is now mainly indicated for proximal and middle hypospadias. OBJECTIVE: To analyze trends in hypospadias diagnoses and surgical treatments in Germany from 2006 to 2024, focusing on potential impacts

In search of common ground: Louisiana's resistance to an extreme risk protection order law for domestic violence prevention.

BACKGROUND: Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) laws allow civil courts to authorize orders to temporarily prevent a person from purchasing or possessing firearms upon finding that they pose a significant risk of harm to themselves or others. In Louisiana, a state with one of the highest rates of firearm homicide of women in the nation, multiple attempts to pass ERPO legislation have failed despite evidence of their effectiveness. We sought to identify places of common ground on the matter of domestic violence against women in Louisiana and to understand how perspectives on politics and polic

Co-development of a research-to-policy framework for Indonesia's health policy-making: a multiperspective approach.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the global promotion of evidence-informed health policy-making, translating research into actionable policy remains a challenge across settings. While global frameworks have provided guidance, adaptation to local contexts remains limited. This study aimed to co-develop a practical, context-specific, stakeholder-informed research-to-policy (R2P) framework for Indonesia. METHODS: A multilevel qualitative study (May 2024-May 2025) combined a narrative literature review, expert consultations, and cognitive debriefing interviews. Increased all-cause mortality following distal radius fractures in Danish adults: a register-based matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are common in older adults and are associated with osteoporosis and underlying frailty. While hip and spine fractures are associated with increased mortality, the association between DRFs and all-cause mortality remains less clear. We aimed to assess all-cause mortality risk following DRF in Denmark compared with age- and sex-matched controls. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, register-based matched cohort study using data from the Danish National Patient Register and Civil Registration System (1998-2018). Adults (≥ 18 years) with a DRF

Justo Gonzalo (1910-1986): a pioneer of brain dynamics.

The present work offers an overview of the pioneering contributions of the neuroscientist Justo Gonzalo to the study of the human cerebral cortex, within the historical context of his time and in relation to current research. Gonzalo initially trained under Gonzalo Rodríguez Lafora (a disciple of Santiago Ramón y Cajal) and always maintained a close relationship with him and his circle, connecting him to the Spanish Neurological School (Cajal's school). He also trained in neurology in Austria and Germany (1933-1935). The research he called brain dynamics began during the Spanish Civil War (193

A Cross-Sectional Observational Study of Serum Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease frequently accompanied by thyroid dysfunction, which may influence disease activity. Occasionally, patients with RA have thyroid abnormalities. Autoimmune thyroid conditions, such as Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, may have a genetic propensity to occur alongside RA. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by providing data on the prevalence and patterns of thyroid dysfunction in RA patients in South Gujarat. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Government Medical College, S

Mapping stakeholders for developing cancer research in Small Island Developing States: a descriptive study from the Eastern Caribbean.

INTRODUCTION: High cancer mortality in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is compounded by the insufficient evidence from local epidemiological studies. Stakeholder engagement is particularly important in SIDS to ultimately drive these studies and cancer control. We aimed to map cancer control stakeholders as part of the development of the CaSIDEC study. METHODS: The Cancer in Small Island Developing States of the Eastern Caribbean (CaSIDEC) study investigates the role of overseas travel on cancer survivorship in the six countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Epicenter of the Boko Haram Insurgency: Prevalence and Psychosocial Correlates.

BACKGROUND: The 'Boko Haram insurgency' is one of the most devastating armed conflicts that the Nigerian State has experienced in the post-civil war era. The quantum of destruction in terms of lives and property is beyond rational comprehension as it left in its trail both physical and psychological traumata. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the psychological sequelae of violent conflicts globally, with prevalence rates of up to 72% in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence rate of PTSD as well as to examine its psychosoc

Tackling infectious disease outbreak and vaccination misinformation: a community-based strategy in Niger State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: While studies might have found misinformation to affect health decision-making, it is not solely responsible; it also plays a role. The rapid spread of misinformation undermines public trust in health systems and interventions, negatively affecting health decisions and exacerbating health crises. Nigeria Health Watch established a Health Misinformation Fellowship programme in this study to combat health misinformation through community-based approaches in Nigeria. METHODS: The fellowship was conducted between August 2023 and January 2024 in Niger State, Nigeria, and combines both
