This is a critical analysis of the recent morphological classification of alcoholic liver disease, proposed by a group of European and North American pathologists. After introductory remarks on the toxic effect of alcohol, the main histopathologic lesions are described. The detailed characterization of the lesions is justified in order to unify the language used by pathologists, for a correct diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic evaluation. Comments are made on the advantages and disadvantages of an essentially morphologic classification of alcoholic liver disease.

Ninety-one patients with arteriomegaly and diffuse aneurysmal disease below the level of the renal arteries have been classified according to the extent and location of aneurysmal change. A total of 174 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci were isolated from the urine of urological patients in the USSR (Moscow) and the GDR (Wernigerode). Three schemes were used for identifying the species of the cultures (S. epidermidis and S. saprophyticus): the scheme proposed by the International Subcommittee for Taxonomy of Staphylococci and Micrococci (1976), the scheme of Digranes and Oeding (1975) and the scheme proposed by the authors of the present work.
