Effects of different irrigation lower limits and combined application of reduced nitrogen with organic fertilizer on spring-season tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum).

Greenhouse tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) are a high-value cash crop globally; however, inefficient water and nitrogen management in greenhouse systems often leads to resource waste, environmental risks, and reduced yield/quality, thereby posing challenges for sustainable cultivation. Herein, we aimed to optimize water and fertilizer management for spring greenhouse tomatoes by investigating how different irrigation lower limits, combined with reduced nitrogen and organic fertilizer, affect photosynthetic performance, yield, fruit quality, and water-nitrogen use efficiency. A three-factor exp

Melatonin-mediated redox regulation in fruits: modulating oxidative signaling for quality preservation.

Melatonin is a key regulator of postharvest redox homeostasis, enhancing antioxidant defenses and coordinating ROS signaling. Its application effectively delays senescence, preserves fruit quality, and offers a sustainable strategy for improving postharvest storability. Postharvest deterioration of fruits and vegetables represents a major challenge to quality retention, shelf life, and commercial profitability, largely due to oxidative stress and disruption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. During ripening, cold storage, mechanical injury, and pathogen infection, excessive ROS accu

Localized root colonization by Trichoderma afroharzianum T22 is associated with host transcriptional reprogramming and beneficial bacterial enrichment under salinity stress in sorghum.

Salinity is a major abiotic stress that severely restricts crop productivity. Despite considerable potential, the role of Trichoderma afroharzianum T22 in the molecular responses and root microbiome dynamics associated with salinity tolerance remains poorly understood in sorghum. In this study, T. afroharzianum inoculation alleviated salinity-induced stress by improving chlorophyll content, growth parameters, and nutrient balance, while restricting root-to-shoot Na+ translocation. Split-root experiments showed that T. afroharzianum application to a single root compartment was insufficient to i

Identification and functional verification of resistance genes against Lily bulb virus-1 (LbV-1) in Lilium: Insight from sRNA sequencing and transcriptomic profiling.

Lilium is an economically important genus widely cultivated for ornamental and commercial use. In this study, we report the identification and characterization of a novel mitovirus, designated Lily Bulb Virus-1 (LbV-1), detected in commercial lily bulb stocks. This virus represents a previously uncharacterized member of the mitochondrial RNA virus group associated with lily crops. A survey of 50 commercially cultivated lily bulbs, including Lilium longiflorum varieties, revealed LbV-1 infection in a single cultivar, indicating a low but detectable incidence under the tested conditions. Targeted supplementation with bioactive plants sustainably improves goat health and decreases antiparasitic drug use on smallholder farms.

Goats play a significant role in farming communities in semi-arid tropical areas with limited cropping capacity; however, production is limited by endoparasites, especially gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs). Control of GINs is typically mediated by anthelmintic drugs, but can be costly or ineffective where anthelmintic-resistant GINs are present. To manage anthelmintic resistance and improve herd health at lower costs, farmers can implement Targeted Selective Treatment (TST) strategies to treat animals based on performance or health traits. The study aimed to quantify the impacts of plant-base

Impacts of trichothecene mycotoxins on human colonic epithelial cells: molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: Trichothecenes are a family of structurally related mycotoxins typically found in cereal crops, thus threatening the health of human digestive tract. In colonic epithelial cells (CECs), trichothecenes inhibit protein synthesis and cell proliferation, induce oxidative stress, DNA damage, ribotoxic stress response (RSR), endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), unfolded protein response (UPR), inflammation, and apoptosis, destruct cell junctions, and alter mucus composition. Although recent studies have enhanced the understanding on the molecular mechanisms of these toxic effects, interco

Genetic diversity and population structure analysis of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] genotypes based on agro-morphological traits and SNP markers.

Soybean (Glycine max) is one of the world's most important oilseed crops and has adapted to various environmental conditions. Yields of soybeans in Nigeria are notably low due to different production constraints, including the limited availability of improved varieties and the slow replacement rate of old varieties with new and high-yielding ones. Ensuring high genetic diversity in the working germplasm is among the primary factors for the success of breeding programs in identifying high-yielding and well-adapted improved varieties. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and populati

Which Plant Traits Increase Soil Carbon Sequestration? Empirical Evidence From a Long-Term Poplar Genetic Diversity Trial.

Plants play a key role in mediating soil response to global change, and breeding or engineering crops to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) storage is a potential route to land-based carbon dioxide removal in agricultural systems. However, due to limited observational datasets plus shifting paradigms of SOC stabilization, it is unclear which plant traits are most important for enhancing different types of soil organic matter. Existing long-term common gardens of genetically diverse plant populations may provide an opportunity to evaluate biological controls on SOC, separate from environmental

Pyrrolizidine alkaloid intoxication outbreaks in fattening pigs associated with drought-related feed contamination.

BACKGROUND: Pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) intoxication is a well-documented condition in livestock, resulting from the ingestion of forage and grain contaminated with PA-producing plants. These phytotoxins primarily affect the liver and can lead to severe clinical and pathological disorders, particularly in highly susceptibility species such as pigs. Although sporadic cases of chronic PA toxicosis have been reported in swine, extensive outbreaks affecting large geographic areas have not been previously documented. This report describes a large-scale PA intoxication event affecting multiple inten

Does stomatal patterning in amphistomatous leaves minimize the CO2 diffusion path length within leaves?

Photosynthesis is co-limited by multiple factors depending on the plant and its environment. These include biochemical rate limitations, internal and external water potentials, temperature, irradiance and carbon dioxide ( C O 2 ). Amphistomatous leaves have stomata on both abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces. This feature is considered an adaptation to alleviate C O 2 diffusion limitations in productive environments as the diffusion path length from stomate to chloroplast is effectively halved in amphistomatous leaves. Plants may also reduce C O 2 limitations through other aspects of optim

Volatile Compounds Emitted by Plant Growth-Promoting Fungus Tolypocladium inflatum GT22 Alleviate Copper and Pathogen Stress.

Previous studies on the intricate interactions between plants and microorganisms have revealed that fungal volatile compounds (VCs) can affect plant growth and development. However, the precise mechanisms underlying these actions remain to be delineated. In this study, we discovered that VCs from the soilborne fungus Tolypocladium inflatum GT22 enhance the growth of Arabidopsis. Remarkably, priming Arabidopsis with GT22 VCs caused the plant to display an enhanced immune response and mitigated the detrimental effects of both pathogenic infections and copper stress. Transcriptomic analyses of Ar

Contribution of wastewater irrigated vegetables to the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminth infection among female farmers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Untreated or inadequately treated wastewater carrying human feces can host helminth eggs and larvae, contaminating the soil and plants that are irrigated with it. In Addis Ababa, farmers use untreated wastewater to grow vegetables; however, there are little data currently available published on vegetables' contribution to the prevalence of helminth among female farmers along the Akaki River, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa City in February 2022. A stratified random sampling method was used to sample farming households. The sa

Effects of Zinc-Biofortified Wheat Intake on Plasma Markers of Fatty Acid Metabolism and Oxidative Stress Among Adolescents.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Zinc deficiency is common worldwide and has been linked to reduced growth and immune function, increased risk of and slower recovery from infections, and increased risk of non-communicable diseases. To address the issue, zinc biofortification of wheat has been proposed as a sustainable approach to increase dietary zinc intake in countries like Pakistan, where zinc deficiency rates are high and wheat is the primary staple crop. Since plasma zinc concentration (PZC) does not reliably respond to small changes in zinc intake, biomarkers sensitive to small changes in zinc inta

Influence of environmental conditions on the production of nutraceuticals in Italian edible plant landraces.

Autochthonous plant varieties, also referred to as landraces, represent an important genetic resource, being well-adapted to the environment in which they have been selected. Landraces usually show profiles rich in nutraceuticals, making them an effective and valuable alternative to commercial agri-products, as well as potential candidates for crop improvement programs. Basilicata region is recognized as an Italian hotspot for agrobiodiversity, due to its complex orography. Thus, this work aimed to characterize and monitor, for two successive years, the content of secondary metabolites and rel

Comparative Metabolomics Profiling Reveals Key Metabolites and Associated Pathways Regulating Tuber Dormancy in White Yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.).

Yams are economic and medicinal crops with a long growth cycle, spanning between 9-11 months due to their prolonged tuber dormancy. Tuber dormancy has constituted a major constraint in yam production and genetic improvement. In this study, we performed non-targeted comparative metabolomic profiling of tubers of two white yam genotypes, (Obiaoturugo and TDr1100873), to identify metabolites and associated pathways that regulate yam tuber dormancy using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Yam tubers were sampled between 42 days after physiological maturity (DAPM) till tuber sprouting. T

Composition, Microbiota, Mechanisms, and Anti-Obesity Properties of Rice Bran.

Rice is a major cereal crop and a staple food for nearly 50% of people worldwide. Rice bran (RB) is a nutrient-rich by-product of rice processing. RB is rich in carbohydrates, fibers, proteins, lipids, minerals, and several trace elements (phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and manganese). The extraction process and storage have influenced RB extracts and RB oil's quality. The RB composition has also varied on the rice cultivars. The color of RB indicates the richness of the bioactive compounds, especially anthocyanins. γ-oryzanol, tocopherols, tocotrienols, and unsaturated fatty acids

Comparison of two controlled-release fertilizer formulations for cut-and-come-again harvest yield and mineral content of Lactuca sativa L. cv. Outredgeous grown under International Space Station environmental conditions.

Red Romaine leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Outredgeous) was grown in ground-based analogues of the Veggie plant-growth units used to grow salad vegetables for astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS). Plants were grown for 56 days with three "cut-and-come again" leaf harvests from the same plants. Six Biomass-Production-Systems-for-Education (BPSe) units were used to grow 'Outredgeous' ('OR') lettuce in a walk-in growth chamber under temperature, humidity, and LED-lighting conditions similar to those occurring in Veggie on ISS. Because of the ISS micro-gravity environment, both

Genotype by Environment Interaction on Resistance to Cassava Green Mite Associated Traits and Effects on Yield Performance of Cassava Genotypes in Nigeria.

Cassava is the main source of carbohydrate for over 70% of the people in Nigeria, the world's largest producer and consumer of the crop. The yields of cassava are, however, relatively low in Nigeria largely due to pests and disease infections that significantly lead to inconsistencies in productivity of cassava genotypes in various environments. Fifty-eight F1 hybrid cassava genotypes plus their two parents which served as check varieties were evaluated in three locations for two years (that is six environments). The objectives of the study were to evaluate genotype by environment interactions
