BACKGROUND: SOT recipients with prior Strongyloides stercoralis infection risk hyperinfection post-transplant. Risk-based screening may miss at-risk candidates as endemicity expands beyond classic regions.
METHODS: Retrospective study of SOT candidates < 26 years at Cincinnati Children's Hospital (2018-2024). Universal serology-based screening was implemented in 2023. Seroprevalence was estimated with exact 95% CIs; seropositive and seronegative patients were compared on demographic and exposure characteristics.
RESULTS: 178 patients were screened. Seroprevalence was 3.4% (6/178; 95% CI 1.2%

Strongyloides ratti is a helminth parasite that displays tissue-migrating and intestinal life stages. Myeloid C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) are pattern recognition receptors that recognize pathogen-derived ligands and initiate immune responses. To date, the role of CLRs in S. ratti infection has not been investigated. Here, we show that S. ratti-derived ligands are recognized by the CLR Macrophage inducible Ca2+-dependent lectin receptor (MINCLE). While MINCLE-deficiency did not affect initiation of a protective anti-S. ratti type 2 immunity, MINCLE-deficient mice had a transient advantage in

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum and Intestinal Parasitic Infections (IPIs) - with the corresponding pathogenesis among children remain uncertain. This study aimed at determining the prevalence and the outcomes (including anaemia) of the respective infections and co-infections. Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells transporting oxygen to the various body parts is not sufficient to meet the needs of the body.
METHODS: This was a cross sectional study conducted among 476-refugee camp school children. Kato-Katz technique was used to screen stool samples

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections carry the highest number of disability adjusted life years among all neglected tropical diseases, disproportionately affecting low-income countries such as Madagascar. This study describes the epidemiology of STH and S. stercoralis infections in twelve remote villages surrounding Ranomafana National Park (RNP), Ifanadiana, Madagascar. Questionnaires and stool samples were collected from 574 subjects from random households. The Kato-Katz method and spontaneous sedimentation technique were used to examine stool samples for evidence of infection. Infect

Routine faecal examination of a herd of weaned male goats revealed heavy infections with gastrointestinal strongyles (GIS) and Strongyloides sp. Moxidectin (routinely dosed at 0.3 mg·kg-1, i.e., 1.5 times the sheep dose), although fully effective against GIS, failed to control Strongyloides sp., with an estimated faecal egg count reduction (FECR) of only 55.5%. In addition, levamisole (11.25 mg·kg-1) and ivermectin (0.3 mg·kg-1) also failed to control Strongyloides sp., with FECRs of 1.4% and 53.5%, respectively. On the other hand, albendazole (7.5 mg·kg-1) and netobimin (11.25 mg·kg-1 and 22.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an important human parasite, especially in rural areas and developing countries. Infected immunosuppressed patients are at risk for hyperinfection, with severe clinical consequences. Here we describe the incidental detection and diagnosis of an unexpected S. stercoralis infection by methods designed to detect fungal 28S ribosomal DNA.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (hookworms, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura) are extremely prevalent in school-aged children living in poor sanitary conditions. Recent epidemiological data suggest that Strongyloides stercoralis is highly unreported. However, accurate data are essential for conducting interventions aimed at introducing control and elimination programmes.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 396 randomly selected school-aged children in Amhara region in rural area in north-western Ethiopia, to assess the prevalence of S. stercoralis and othe

One of the problems frequently faced in laboratory facilities is the possibility of the natural parasitic infection of lab animals, which can interfere with biomedical research results. The present study aimed to evaluate cross-reactivity among serum samples from Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) naturally infected with Syphacia muris and experimentally infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis. Forty rats were divided into four groups of ten animals each. Parasite load was evaluated by quantifying the adult worms from both helminthes species recovered from the intestines and the S. venezuelensi

Macrophages are multifunctional cells that are active in TH1- and TH2-mediated responses. In this study, we demonstrate that human and mouse macrophages collaborate with neutrophils and complement to kill the parasite Strongyloides stercoralis in vitro. Infection of mice with worms resulted in the induction of alternatively activated macrophages (AAM) within the peritoneal cavity. These cells killed the worms in vivo and collaborated with neutrophils and complement during the in vitro killing process. AAM generated in vitro killed larvae more rapidly than naive macrophages, which killed larvae

This paper evaluates the prevalence of intestinal parasitosis in a specific population over three years (2007-2009). The results were compared with published data collected from the same population in 1984-1985. During a survey from January 1st 2007 to December 31(st) 2009 a total of 2962 inpatients and outpatients were evaluated in our facility (IRCCS Foundation - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico) for ova and protozoa stool examination (OPE) over three specimens collected alternatively for three days. 614 inpatients and outpatients were evaluated for the Graham Test (GT) over three slides collec

To determine the role of interleukin-5 (IL-5) and eosinophils in protection against Strongyloides ratti, mice treated with anti-IL-5 monoclonal antibody (mAb) were infected with S. ratti larvae. Strongyloides ratti egg numbers in faeces (EPG) in mAb treated mice were higher than those in control mice on days 6 and 7 after inoculation. The numbers of migrating worms in mAb treated mice 36 h after inoculation were higher than those observed in control mice. Intestinal worm numbers in mAb treated mice 5 days after inoculation were higher than those in control mice. These results show that eosinop

The efficacy of an in-feed formulation (IVOMEC premix) containing 0.6% ivermectin was tested against Strongyloides ransomi in swine. The efficacy of ivermectin against patent infections of S. ransomi when given via the feed at 2 ppm for 7 days (Days 0-7) to provide 100 mcg ivermectin kg-1 body weight day-1 was evaluated in a study with 16 3-month-old male castrated piglets. Seven days prior to treatment each piglet was infected subcutaneously with 2500 infective larvae of S. ransomi. Fecal egg counts were carried out on Days -7, 0, 7 and 14, and worm counts on Day 14. Efficacy was 100% in all

Parasitic diseases are common in developing countries; yet they are infrequently diagnosed in cytologic material. Six cases are described where routine cytologic examination identified the parasites and suggested the diagnosis. There were three cases of Entamoeba histolytica infection of the female genital tract and one each of hydatid cyst of the brain, Strongyloides stercoralis infection of the lung and filarial infection of the urinary bladder. To our knowledge, cytologic diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the brain and filarial infection of the urinary bladder has not been previously reported.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Strongyloides stercoralis is a neglected parasitic infection endemic to tropical regions, with rising prevalence in Europe. In kidney transplant (KTX) recipients, high-dose corticosteroids can induce a hyperinfection syndrome, which carries high mortality but is preventable with anthelminthic therapy. Screening for S. stercoralis is currently not included in pre-KTX protocols in Europe. This study assessed the prevalence of S. stercoralis among all haemodialysis patients in Vienna.
METHODS: All consenting haemodialysis patients in Vienna (n = 704) underwent enzyme-l

Small intestinal (SI) tuft cells are critical sentinels for innate type 2 immunity against helminths, but their role in adaptive responses is unclear. We show that despite the presence of protective memory CD4+ T helper 2 (Th2) cells, tuft cells remain essential for worm clearance during a secondary infection with Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri (H. polygyrus bakeri). Th2 cells still develop in the absence of tuft cells or group 2 innate lymphoid cells but upregulate receptors for tuft cell effectors interleukin-25 (IL-25) and leukotriene C4 (LTC4) when they enter the SI. IL-25 and LTC4 are s

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection highly prevalent in Central Africa where it is co-endemic with many other parasitic infections, including soil-transmitted helminths (STHs). For its optimal control, there is a need of descriptive epidemiological data for each endemic region. The objective of the present study was to determine the epidemiological situation around schistosomiasis in Lambaréné, Gabon. A cross-sectional study was conducted among schoolchildren. One urine sample per day was collected on three consecutive days for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis using a urine filtration tec
