Toxic-Induced Encephalopathy Following Chemsex in a Young HIV-Positive Male: A Complex Case of Acute Cognitive Impairment with Anterograde Amnesia and Behavioral Alterations.

BACKGROUND: A broadened clinical spectrum of concomitant complications emerges among the escalating incidence of substance use, particularly … eks later included the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV), the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and tests for visuospatial skills, motor functions, and memory recall. The evaluations revealed pronounced anterograde amnesia, persistent long-term memory inconsistencies, and notable executive function challenges, detailed in Table 1 …

Association of Serum Biomarkers With Neurocognitive Decline After PCI in Small Cell Lung Cancer: An Exploratory Study of the Phase III NCT01780675 Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Blood samples were collected to explore potential serum biomarkers associated with neurocognitive function in small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients who received prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI). METHODS: This pre-specified study included patients with blood samples available, who participated in a phase III trial (NCT01780675). Blood samples were collected before PCI and 3-days post-initiating PCI. Neurocognitive decline was defined as a decrease of ≥ 5 points on total recall in the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) assessed from pre-PCI to 4-months post-PCI. …

Neurodevelopmental outcomes of very low birth weight preterms in preschool childhood: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a risk factor for a child's neurological development. Preterm children have unusual neurodevelopmental profiles with executive, visual-motor functions, fine and gross motor skills, language and behavior that affect learning. In this study, we analyzed the neurodevelopmental outcomes of a cohort of very low birth weight infants admitted to the Treviso Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) between 2014 and 2016 and followed up to preschool childhood. METHOD: This is a prospective cohort study. Infants were followed at birth and after NICU discharge at two- and four-ye

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Treatment: Significant Improvements in Four Ex-Football Players with Possible Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, diagnosed postmortem (hyperphosphorylated tau), is preceded by traumatic encephalopathy syndro … ctivity (FC) over time, with executive function, attention, PTSD, pain, and sleep; and CEN FC, with verbal learning/memory, depression. Increased n-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) (oxygen consumption, mitochondria) was present in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), parallel to less pain and PTSD. CONCLUSION: After tPBM, these ex-football players improved. Significant correl …

Predicting mental and psychomotor delay in very pre-term infants using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm infants are at elevated risk for neurodevelopmental delays. Earlier prediction of delays allows timelier intervention and improved outcomes. Machine learning (ML) was used to predict mental and psychomotor delay at 25 months. METHODS: We applied RandomForest classifier to data from 1109 very preterm infants recruited over 20 years. ML selected key predictors from 52 perinatal and 16 longitudinal variables (1-22 mo assessments). SHapley Additive exPlanations provided model interpretability. RESULTS: Balanced accuracy with perinatal variables was 62%/61% (mental/psycho

Decomposing MRI phenotypic heterogeneity in epilepsy: a step towards personalized classification.

In drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy, precise predictions of drug response, surgical outcome and cognitive dysfunction at an individual level remain challenging. A possible explanation may lie in the dominant 'one-size-fits-all' group-level analytical approaches that does not allow parsing interindividual variations along the disease spectrum. Conversely, analysing inter-patient heterogeneity is increasingly recognized as a step towards person-centred care. Here, we used unsupervised machine learning to estimate latent relations (or disease factors) from 3 T multimodal MRI features [cortic

Practice effects in cognitive assessments three years later in non-carriers but not in symptom-free mutation carriers of autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease: Exemplifying procedural learning and memory?

Practice effects (PEs) defined as an improvement of performance in cognition due to repeated assessments between sessions are well known in unimpaired individuals, while less is known about impaired cognition and particularly in latent brain disease as autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease. The purpose was to evaluate the general (across tests/domains) and domain-specific PE calculated as the annual rate of change (ARC) in relation to years to the estimated disease onset (YECO) and in four groups of AD: asymptomatic mutation carriers (aAD, n = 19), prodromal, i.e., symptomatic mutation carrie

Air pollution and human cognition: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review summarises and evaluates the literature investigating associations between exposure to air pollution and general population cognition, which has important implications for health, social and economic inequalities, and human productivity. METHODS: The engines MEDLINE, Embase Classic+Embase, APA PsycInfo, and SCOPUS were searched up to May 2022. Our inclusion criteria focus on the following pollutants: particulate matter, NOx, and ozone. The cognitive abilities of interest are: general/global cognition, executive function, attention, working memory, learning,

Violence experienced by undergraduate nursing students during clinical placements: An online survey at a Scottish University.

AIM: To assess the prevalence of violence and experiences of violence during clinical placements, among nursing students at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Scotland. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey, using an opt-in online questionnaire. PARTICIPANTS: All 950 undergraduate nursing students aged 18 + years were eligible. METHODS: The survey, with 24 open and closed format questions, was advertised over a 6-week period via the students' virual learning platform. Potential participants were provided with study information before giving (electronic) informed consent. The questionnaire use

Connectome-based model predicts episodic memory performance in individuals with subjective cognitive decline and amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether the whole brain resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) could predict episodic memory performance in individuals with subjective cognitive decline and amnestic mild cognitive impairment. METHOD: This study included 33 cognitive normal (CN), 26 subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and 27 amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients, and all the participants completed resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) scan and neuropsychological scale test data. Connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) based on the rs-FC data was used to predict the auditory verbal learning …

SAVE 2.0: Identifying and strengthening resident leadership skills through simulation based team training.

BACKGROUND: The "Surgery for Abdomino-thoracic ViolencE (SAVE)" animate lab engages surgical residents in the management of penetrating injuries in a team setting. Senior residents, representing postgraduate year (PGY) 3-5, assume the role of team leader and facilitate the junior residents, PGY1-2, in operative management of simulated penetrating wounds. Residents completed five scenarios with increasing level of difficulty within set time limits. Senior residents were evaluated on their team's ability to "SAVE" their patient within the time allotted, as well as their communication and leaders
