BACKGROUND: ABO incompatibility is now the most common cause of isoimmune hemolytic disease of the newborn here. Although hemolytic disease because of ABO incompatibility is clinically milder than that from Rh incompatibility, severe hemolysis occasionally occurs, and some cases require exchange transfusion. It is desirable to assess the accuracy of a group of tests to predict the development of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in ABO incompatibility. Then, early treatment is available for minimizing the frequency of exchange transfusion.
METHODS: Eighty-eight healthy full-term newborn infants bor

The authors present two infants with isoimmune hemolytic disease due to ABO incompatibility complicated by massive hemoglobinuria and secondary acute renal failure. This represents an incidence of 0.36% of all neonates with ABO hemolytic disease in the author's newborn population. Only two patients have been reported previously to have similar complications. Analysis of data of these four infants revealed the clinical characteristics of this complication of ABO incompatibility: 1) very low frequency; 2) early onset of hemoglobinuria (first voided urine) and of acute renal failure (first 2 days

This experiment tested a self-contained blood grouping device under microgravity as well as the possibility that gravity could affect the blood grouping reaction. The experiment tested Rh, ABO, and Coombs-sensitized human erythrocytes against their appropriate antisera and diluents. A self-contained device was built which accomplished the agglutination and collected the agglutinates on filter paper. This was flown on the Columbia Space Shuttle on Jan. 12, 1986. The device produced blood agglutinates to several blood groups and the agglutinates were held on filter paper until returned to us by

Hemolytic disease of the newborn due to ABO incompatibility was first observed by Halbrecht in 1944. This entity has a spectrum ranging from minimal hemolysis requiring no therapy, as is the case in most instances, to severe hemolytic disease requiring aggressive management including exchange transfusion in a small percentage of cases. An extreme degree of hemolytic disease of the newborn due to ABO incompatibility, i.e., hydrops fetalis, has not been well documented in the English literature. We present a case of hydrops fetalis due to ABO incompatibility. The severity of hemolytic disease du

In a series of 288 spontaneous abortions occurring during the first 16 weeks of gestation, simultaneous karyotyping and ABO blood grouping of 555 of the parents were carried out. In 74 of the 288 chromosome-analyzed abortuses, the ABO blood group of the fetus was determined by the immuno-fluorescence technique and the mixed cell agglutinating reaction in fetal tissue. The results of the blood grouping were compared with the ABO blood group frequencies of 8818 blood donors from the same area. Among abortuses with normal karyotype, a significantly higher frequency of ABO incompatibility was foun

BACKGROUND: Regional Blood Transfusion Centre (RBTC), GTB Hospital, Delhi is providing safe and quality blood to one third of Delhi population. A discrepancy exists when reactions in forward grouping do not match with reverse grouping or if the previous and current results do not match.
AIM: To analyze ABO blood group discrepancies in an algorithmic manner, and to access the incidence and causes of ABO discrepancies among blood donors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective data of blood donors with blood group discrepancies was recorded in Regional Blood Transfusion Centre (East) Delhi, during

AIM: To investigate the relationship between the distribution of ABO or Rhesus (Rh) blood group antigens and the incidence of myelomeningocele.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective data was reviewed for all myelomeningocele patients operated at a tertiary academic hospital between years 2014 and 2019. Age, sex, delivery method, physical and neurological examination findings, and radiological findings alongside with blood type of each patient were recorded. The data of blood group distribution among the study patients was compared to the data of healthy individuals in the same region.

The knowledge of blood types frequency in hospital patients helps to plan and perform transfusion therapy at blood donor centers. The distribution of patients’ blood by ABO groups and RhD allows to more efficiently organize and use donor blood banks. The risk of a disease is related to genome composition and is inherited with an ABO blood type. Every person should know his (her) ABO blood type and RhD to enable early identification of the first symptoms of an illness. Materials and methods. This work is based on the study of 4831 blood samples from patients treated at the Center of Cardiovascu

Nomograms have been designed to provide rational and consistent guidelines for the use of phototherapy in the management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. In the management of 195 neonates in the first week of life, phototherapy, given according to these nomograms, was successful, except in some severe cases of Rhesus incompatability, in controlling hyperbilirubinemia in both premature and term neonates. When compared to the more random use before the introduction of the nomograms, phototherapy was reduced significantly without an increase in the requirement for exchange transfusions.

Therapeutic apheresis (TA) plays a significant role in various aspects of renal transplantation. It has been a necessary preconditioning component in ABO incompatible kidney transplants and an important modality in the removal of anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies both in the context of desensitization protocols that have been developed to allow highly sensitized kidney transplant candidates to be successfully transplanted and as treatment of antibody mediated rejection episodes post transplantation. In addition, TA has been used with various results for the management of recurrent

Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is a well-known cause of antibody mediated hemolysis after minor ABO mismatched transplantations. In most cases, PLS is mild and self-limited and easily recovered through transfusion. We report an unusual case of transient loss of A1 phenotype in AB blood type patient with PLS after ABO minor incompatible liver transplantation from B blood type deceased donor.

BACKGROUND: ABO compatibility can affect platelet transfusion safety and efficacy, and ABO-incompatible (ABOi) platelets likely increases the risks of transfusion reactions though the magnitude of this risk is unclear.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data collected on all platelet transfusions administered over 36+ months were classified based on patient and product ABO blood group type and merged with a data set that included all transfusion reactions reported during that period. The transfusion reaction rates among various subsets was calculated.
RESULTS: In patients greater than 1 year of age,
