Goal achievement provides new insights into interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome symptoms and outcomes.

AIMS: Goal Assessment Scaling (GAS), wherein patients specify goals then evaluate treatments with regard to goal achievement, has proven utility in assessing treatment of complex conditions such as chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and incontinence. We used surveys and focus groups to characterize the goals of patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) in order to create a pilot GAS. METHODS: 37 patients with IC/PBS recorded and ranked their treatment goals which were pooled and analyzed for emergent domains and priority rankings. 15 patients participated in 3 sep

Achievement of pregnancy three times in the same patient during luteal GnRH agonist administration.

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) administration from the mid-luteal phase onwards is considered the gold standard of ovarian stimulation for IVF treatment. It might, however, coincide with an implanting spontaneous pregnancy. Concerns have therefore been raised with regard to the evolution of the resulting pregnancies and long-term outcome of the children born. The current case report describes the achievement of three pregnancies in the same patient during luteal administration of GnRHa. One pregnancy ended in spontaneous abortion and the other two resulted in the delivery of t

The role of speed of processing, rapid naming, and phonological awareness in reading achievement.

This study investigated the role of speed of processing, rapid naming, and phonological awareness in reading achievement. Measures of response time in motor, visual, lexical, grammatical, and phonological tasks were administered to 279 children in third grade. Measures of rapid object naming, phonological awareness, and reading achievement were given in second and fourth grades. Reading group comparisons indicated that poor readers were proportionally slower than good readers across response time measures and on the rapid object naming task. These results suggest that some poor readers have a

The utility of kindergarten teacher ratings for predicting low academic achievement in first grade.

The purpose of this study was to assess the predictive value of kindergarten teachers' ratings of pupils for later first-grade academic achievement. Kindergarten students were rated by their teachers on a variety of variables, including math and reading performance, teacher concerns, and amount of learning relative to peers. These variables were then analyzed with respect to outcome measures for math and reading ability administered in the first grade. The teachers' ratings of academic performance were significantly correlated with scores on the outcome measures. Analyses were also carried out

Predicting antisocial behavior in youngsters displaying poor academic achievement: a review of risk factors.

School failure tends to be associated with other negative behaviors, and delinquency in particular has been found to be a common co-occurring difficulty. Factors thought to contribute to the co-occurrence of school failure and delinquency are discussed with the goal of helping clinicians identify among youngsters failing at school those most likely to develop antisocial behavior. The factors addressed include temperament, intelligence, school attitude, peer influence, and parenting practices. The implications of these risk factors for early assessment and treatment are then examined.

Identification of a group of children with dyslexia by means of IQ-achievement discrepancies.

The reading and spelling abilities of 462 school children of mean age 8 years 7 months were examined in relation to their intellectual abilities (as assessed by the WISC-R) by means of cluster analysis. The analysis identified five groups. In one group reading and spelling were considerably poorer than their intellectual abilities. The performance of the five groups was examined on a number of cognitive tests commonly associated with dyslexia. The group identified as having significant discrepancies showed the poorest performance on many of these tests. In addition this group showed other feat

The impact of phonemic processing instruction on the reading achievement of reading-disabled children.

It is hypothesized that a phonemic processing deficit is a primary causal factor in the reading problems of many children with developmental dyslexia. An instructional model which emphasizes phonics instruction as a key in the treatment of children with reading disorders is presented. Procedures for the application of this model in a parent-involvement clinic program are described. Results from two typical children from the clinic sample who had received treatment for more than a year are presented. One Fourth-Grade child, who began the program with a 1 1/2-year reading deficit, was reading gr

The vascular biological stereotype and the achievement problem of the neurohumoral integration during phylogenesis.

There is developed Bertalanffy's theory of systems on the evolution process of biological stereotypes (theory of Mârza, Repciuc, Eskenasy 1962) and the systemic theory nomenclature used in biology is critically discussed. A more complete definition of the reactivity is attempted. Biological stereotypes are analogous to the Pavlovian absolute reflexes and represent specialized and integrated parts of the reactivity, which forms a unity of contraries with the metabolism. There is considered that a biological stereotypes achieves to form a system when the specific organ is differentiated. On this

Do health and education agencies in the United States share responsibility for academic achievement and health? A review of 25 years of evidence about the relationship of adolescents' academic achievement and health behaviors.

PURPOSE: The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitors health-risk behaviors of adolescents in United States, which include (1) violence; (2) tobacco use; (3) alcohol and other drug use; (4) sexual behaviors contributing to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases; (5) inadequate physical activity; and (6) unhealthy dietary behaviors. We reviewed original research published in peer-reviewed journals between 1985 and 2010 to synthesize evidence about the association of adolescent health-risk behaviors and academic achievement. METHODS: Using predetermined

Real-World Achievement of Guideline-Concordant Treatment and Survival in Osteosarcoma: A Nationwide Registry Study.

Real-world achievement of guideline-concordant treatment in osteosarcoma remains unclear. This study aimed to determine stage-specific rates of guideline-concordant treatment, evaluate their association with survival outcomes, and identify factors associated with non-concordance. Patients with osteosarcoma between 2011 and 2020 were identified from the Japanese Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Registry. Rates of guideline-concordant treatment and disease-specific survival (DSS) were investigated. Among 1149 patients, 969 (84%) received guideline-concordant treatment. Achievement rates were 85% for l

When digital engagement becomes dysregulated: associations with aggression, achievement motivation, and academic performance in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are embedded in digital environments that are increasingly central to social, academic, and emotional life. Yet the developmental implications of digital engagement remain contested, particularly when exposure metrics such as screen time are used as primary indicators. The present study examined digital engagement as a multidimensional construct while treating regulatory difficulty-the dimension most directly reflecting impaired control and difficulty disengaging-as the focal predictor of aggression, achievement motivation, and objectively measured academic performanc

Family structure and family satisfaction as factors of adolescents' autonomous motivation, cheating, and academic achievement.

There is considerable evidence showing that children growing up in two-parent intact families are more academically successful than children from other family structures. However, little is known about the psychological mechanisms underlying the relationship between family structure and academic achievement. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the role of satisfaction with family relationships as a mediator of the associations of family structure with academic motivation, attitude toward school, and academic achievement. Using a representative sample of Russian adolescents in grade

The role of critical thinking in explaining students' academic achievement in undergraduate animal sciences programs.

Critical thinking skills are an in-demand trait of many STEM professionals, including animal scientists. Many instructors note the importance of critical thinking, but few have a clear understanding of what critical thinking means, how to teach to enhance the development of critical thinking skills, and how to assess the critical thinking as a student learning outcome. Many higher education institutions utilize student success prediction models with the hope that early prediction can be used to provide additional assistance to students when needed to improve the student success rate. These pre

Contemporary achievement of guideline recommendations for blood pressure management after stroke in the CONVINCE trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for stroke. Studies between 1996 and 2013 reported high rates of non-achievement of guideline recommended blood pressure (BP) targets following stroke/TIA. Few recent large studies of long-term post-stroke BP management exist, and no studies have reported findings since the introduction of new guideline recommendations (systolic blood pressure [SBP] < 130 mmHg) in 2022. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed BP control in the CONVINCE trial, which randomised 3154 recent ischaemic stroke/high-risk TIA patients to colchicine 0.5 mg daily o

Fundamental motor skills, executive functions, and academic achievement of Chinese schoolchildren: Testing a mediating model.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have observed the relationship between children's fundamental motor skills (FMS) and their academic achievement. However, the inner workings of this correlation remain underexplored, especially in the context of China. This study addresses this gap by investigating the associations among FMS, such as locomotor, object control, and stability skills, executive function (EF), such as inhibition control and working memory, and academic achievement among Chinese schoolchildren. Furthermore, this research determines how EF mediates the relationship between FMS and academic ac

Teacher Personality Predicts Emotional Well-Being and Academic Achievement in Students with Specific Learning Disorders.

Background/Objectives: Students with specific learning disorders (SLDs) are at increased risk for emotional and academic difficulties. While teacher characteristics can influence student outcomes, few studies have examined the role of teacher personality in supporting students with SLDs. This study investigated whether teacher personality traits predicted student emotional well-being and academic achievement in a school-based intervention context. Methods: Participants were 64 students with SLDs (Mage = 13.28) nested within 21 teachers. Students completed measures of emotional well-being at ba

Emotional factor matters in language learning? A meta-analysis of emotional intelligence on language achievement.

Emotional intelligence (EI) has garnered sustained theoretical and empirical attention over recent decades. Within the domain of linguistics, a growing body of research has investigated the relationship between EI and language achievement. Publication trends in this area reveal two distinct phases: a period of lukewarm attention (2009-2017), followed by a phase of rapid growth (2018-present). The present meta-analysis aims to determine whether EI significantly influences language achievement. Drawing on data from 47 independent studies, comprising 63 effect sizes and a total sample of 18,649 p

Exploring contradicting associations between anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and academic achievement: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Academic achievement is an important predictor of later life outcomes, yet its relationship with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the direction and strength of these associations and is the first to synthesise evidence on moderators and mediators. METHOD: We searched Embase, PsycINFO, and PubMed from inception to 12 March 2025 for observational studies of anxiety disorders or OCD (exposure variables) and academic achievement (outcome) at any age. Study quality was assessed using the
