Acoustic biomarkers in asthma: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Current monitoring methods of asthma, such as peak expiratory flow testing, have important limitations. The emergence of automated acoustic sound analysis, capturing cough, wheeze, and inhaler use, offers a promising avenue for improving asthma diagnosis and monitoring. This systematic review evaluated the validity of acoustic biomarkers in supporting the diagnosis of asthma and its monitoring. DATA SOURCES: A search was performed using two databases (PubMed and Embase) for all relevant studies published before November 2023. STUDY SELECTION: 27 studies were included for analysis.

Acoustic enrichment of sperm for in vitro fertilization.

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has emerged as a crucial method in modern medicine for tackling infertility. However, the success of fertilization depends on the quality and quantity of sperm, often necessitating invasive surgical intervention, which presents challenges for non-invasive in vitro fertilization. Acoustic microfluidics technology has found widespread application across various biological contexts. In this paper, we propose to introduce a novel approach using asymmetric acoustic streaming generated by a single interdigital transducer (IDT) to enhance sperm concentration and

Acoustic drug delivery to the maxillary sinus.

Acoustic drug delivery (ADD) is an innovative method for drug delivery to the nose and paranasal sinuses and can be used to treat chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The underlying mechanism of ADD is based on the oscillatory exchange of air between the nasal cavity (NC) and the maxillary sinus (MS) through the ostium, which assists with the transfer of the drug particles from the NC to the sinuses. This study aims to examine the efficacy of ADD for drug delivery to the MS using an acoustic wave applied to nebulised aerosols entering the nostril. Here, the effect of acoustic frequency, amplitude, an

Noise: Acoustic Trauma to the Inner Ear.

Cochlear damage is often thought to result in hearing thresholds shift, whether permanent or temporary. The report of tinnitus in the absence of any clear deficit in cochlear function was believed to indicate that hearing loss and tinnitus, while comorbid, could arise independently from each other. In all likelihood, tinnitus that is not of central nervous system origin is associated with hearing loss. As a correlate, although a treatment of most forms of tinnitus will likely emerge in the years to come, curing tinnitus will first require curing hearing loss.

Stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy for acoustic neuromas.

Neuromas are benign intracranial tumors with indolent natural history. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment and only after the introduction of single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), radiotherapy emerged as an alternative viable option. In this review, we focused on SRS or conventionally fractionated stereotactic radiotherapeutic (FSRT) approaches. We described the results of different doses used for SRS and FSRT, the current status, and a comparison between the two radiotherapy approaches. Stereotactic radiotherapy techniques aim to control tumor growth with minimal toxicity. SRS usi

Perioperative Care of the Patient With Acoustic Neuroma.

Acoustic neuromas, also known as vestibular schwannomas, are slow-growing, benign tumors that develop on the eighth cranial nerve. Common signs and symptoms of an acoustic neuroma include hearing loss and balance disturbances. A physical examination, a hearing evaluation, and diagnostic imaging assist in the diagnosis of an acoustic neuroma. Patients with a confirmed tumor have three treatment options: observation, stereotactic radiosurgery, and surgical removal. Complications include cerebrospinal fluid leakage, damage to ancillary brain structures, facial nerve damage, and bleeding or vascul

Airborne Acoustic Perception by a Jumping Spider.

Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are famous for their visually driven behaviors [1]. Here, however, we present behavioral and neurophysiological evidence that these animals also perceive and respond to airborne acoustic stimuli, even when the distance between the animal and the sound source is relatively large (∼3 m) and with stimulus amplitudes at the position of the spider of ∼65 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Behavioral experiments with the jumping spider Phidippus audax reveal that these animals respond to low-frequency sounds (80 Hz; 65 dB SPL) by freezing-a common anti-predatory behavior cha

The Fully Endoscopic Acoustic Neuroma Surgery.

Surgical approaches to vestibular schwannomas (VS) are widely known and extensively recorded. For the first time, an exclusive endoscopic approach to the internal acoustic canal (IAC) was described and used to safely remove a cochlear schwannoma involving IAC in March 2012. The aim of this article was to summarize indications and technique to treat intracanalicular VS by transcanal/transpromontorial endoscopic approach. Because management of intracanalicular VSs is complex and strongly debated, this kind of therapeutic option in the appropriate and selected cases could modify classic concepts

Cardiorespiratory Responses to Acoustic Noise in Belugas.

To date, most research on the adverse effects of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals has focused on auditory and behavioral responses. Other responses have received little attention and are often ignored. In this study, the effect of acoustic noise on heart rate was examined in captive belugas. The data suggest that (1) heart rate can be used as a measure of physiological response (including stress) to noise in belugas and other cetaceans, (2) cardiac response is influenced by parameters of noise and adaptation to repeated exposure, and (3) cetacean calves are more vulnerable to the adverse

Disability evaluation in acoustic blast trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Acoustic blast trauma is different from Noise induced hearing loss. Blast trauma can damage the tympanic membrane, ossicles and cochlea singly or in combination. It produces immediate severe hearing loss and may be associated with tinnitus and vestibular symptoms. Hearing loss recovers spontaneously in many cases but may be permanent in 30-55% cases. Thirteen patients working in an explosive manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh were exposed to blast trauma at work place. All these workers complained of immediate hearing loss and were subjected to audiological investigations. MET

Acoustic simulation of a patient's obstructed airway.

This research focuses on the numerical simulation of stridor; a high pitched, abnormal noise, resulting from turbulent airflow and vibrating tissue through a partially obstructed airway. Characteristics of stridor noise are used by medical doctors as indication for location and size of the obstruction. The relation between type of stridor and the various diseases associated with airway obstruction is unclear; therefore, simply listening to stridor is an unreliable diagnostic tool. The overall aim of the study is to better understand the relationship between characteristics of stridor noise and

Loud noise exposure and acoustic neuroma.

The results from studies of loud noise exposure and acoustic neuroma are conflicting. A population-based case-control study of 451 acoustic neuroma patients and 710 age-, sex-, and region-matched controls was conducted in Sweden between 2002 and 2007. Occupational exposure was based on historical measurements of occupational noise (321 job titles summarized by a job exposure matrix) and compared with self-reported occupational noise exposure. We also evaluated self-reported noise exposure during leisure activity. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios. There was no st

Acoustic communication in insect disease vectors.

Acoustic signalling has been extensively studied in insect species, which has led to a better understanding of sexual communication, sexual selection and modes of speciation. The significance of acoustic signals for a blood-sucking insect was first reported in the XIX century by Christopher Johnston, studying the hearing organs of mosquitoes, but has received relatively little attention in other disease vectors until recently. Acoustic signals are often associated with mating behaviour and sexual selection and changes in signalling can lead to rapid evolutionary divergence and may ultimately c

Wideband acoustic immittance: tympanometric measures.

Wideband tympanometry (WT) measurements provide a view of the acoustic response properties of the middle ear over a broad range of frequencies and ear-canal pressures. These measurements show sensitivity to trends in ear-canal/middle ear maturation and changes in middle ear status as a result of different types of dysfunction. While results from early WT work showed improvements over ambient wideband tests in terms of test performance for identifying middle ear dysfunction and conductive hearing loss (CHL), more recent studies have shown high, but similar test performance for both ambient and

Aerodynamic and acoustic effects of ventricular gap.

PURPOSE: Supraglottic compression is frequently observed in individuals with dysphonia. It is commonly interpreted as an indication of excessive circumlaryngeal muscular tension and ventricular medialization. The purpose of this study was to describe the aerodynamic and acoustic impact of varying ventricular medialization in a canine model. METHODS: Subglottal air pressure, glottal airflow, electroglottograph, acoustic signals, and high-speed video images were recorded in seven excised canine larynges mounted in vitro for laryngeal vibratory experimentation. The degree of gap between the vent

An acoustic-perceptual study of vocal tremor.

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor of the voice (ETV) is an involuntary intention tremor of the vocal folds that causes fluctuations in fundamental frequency (f(0)) and/or intensity leading to an unsteady voice. There is limited data on how different acoustic variables affect perception of severity of tremor. AIM: The purpose of the study was to determine if systematic changes in f(0), rate or modulation frequency (f(f0m)), extent or depth of modulation (d(f0m)), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) affect perception of severity of tremor. METHOD: Vowel phonations of four speakers (two male and two fem
