Ecological Opportunity, Evolution, and the Emergence of Flea-Borne Plague.

The plague bacillus Yersinia pestis is unique among the pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae in utilizing an arthropod-borne transmission route. Transmission by fleabite is a recent evolutionary adaptation that followed the divergence of Y. pestis from the closely related food- and waterborne enteric pathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis A combination of population genetics, comparative genomics, and investigations of Yersinia-flea interactions have disclosed the important steps in the evolution and emergence of Y. pestis as a flea-borne pathogen. Only a few genetic changes, representing both gene gai

Bioaccumulation and phyto-translocation of arsenic, chromium and zinc by Jatropha curcas L.: impact of dairy sludge and biofertilizer.

The present study was planned to remediate the metalloid and metal contaminated soil by using non-edible and economic plant species Jatropha curcas L. The experiment was conducted on pots to improve the survival rate, metal tolerance and growth response of the plant on soil; having different concentrations of arsenic, chromium and zinc. The soil was amended with dairy sludge and bacterial inoculum (Azotobacter chroococcum) as biofertilizer. The results of the study showed that the bioaccumulation potential was increased with increase in metalloid and metal concentration in soil system. Applica

Human facial expressions as adaptations: Evolutionary questions in facial expression research.

The importance of the face in social interaction and social intelligence is widely recognized in anthropology. Yet the adaptive functions of human facial expression remain largely unknown. An evolutionary model of human facial expression as behavioral adaptation can be constructed, given the current knowledge of the phenotypic variation, ecological contexts, and fitness consequences of facial behavior. Studies of facial expression are available, but results are not typically framed in an evolutionary perspective. This review identifies the relevant physical phenomena of facial expression and i

A circadian oscillator model based on empirical data.

A model based on the van der Pol equation has been developed to predict the pattern of adaptation of aircrew and other travellers to rapid time-zone transitions, when the exposure to light cannot be quantified. The parameters of the model include the stiffness (mu) and the intrinsic period (T0), which together define the free-running period, and the external force (F). The parameter values were estimated by using a simplex minimization technique to fit the output from the model to body temperature data from 12 individuals before, and over a 12-day period immediately after, a 10-h eastward tran

Aspartic Protease Inhibition Induces Proteomic Remodeling in Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a major systemic mycosis in Latin America caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, yet the contribution of aspartic proteases to fungal physiology and pathogenicity remains poorly understood. Here, we employed data-independent acquisition (DIA)-based quantitative proteomics to investigate the impact of pepstatin A-mediated inhibition of aspartic proteases on the P. brasiliensis proteome. High-coverage analysis identified up to 21,156 peptides and approximately 3000 proteins per condition, revealing progressive and time-dependent proteomic remodeling after inhibi

Battle for Metals: Regulatory RNAs at the Front Line.

Metal such as iron, zinc, manganese, and nickel are essential elements for bacteria. These nutrients are required in crucial structural and catalytic roles in biological processes, including precursor biosynthesis, DNA replication, transcription, respiration, and oxidative stress responses. While essential, in excess these nutrients can also be toxic. The immune system leverages both of these facets, to limit bacterial proliferation and combat invaders. Metal binding immune proteins reduce the bioavailability of metals at the infection sites starving intruders, while immune cells intoxicate pa

Untargeted metabolomics reveals metabolic reprogramming and key metabolites in adherent and suspension Vero cells.

INTRODUCTION: Vero cells are the primary host for industrial vaccine production, and high-density suspension culture is the predominant manufacturing approach. However, this method faces major challenges, including low shear tolerance, difficulty adapting to serum-free conditions, metabolic imbalance, prolonged acclimation periods, and batch-to-batch variability. Furthermore, the metabolic reprogramming mechanisms underlying suspension adaptation remain poorly understood. METHODS: We established serum-free suspension adaptation of adherent Vero cells using reduction serum levels strategy. Bio

Strategies for Offline Adaptive Biology-Guided Radiotherapy (BgRT) on a PET-Linac Platform.

Background/Objectives: This study aims to present a structured clinical workflow for offline adaptive Biology-guided Radiotherapy (BgRT) using the RefleXion X1 PET-linac system, addressing challenges introduced by inter-treatment anatomical and biological changes. Methods: We propose a decision tree offline adaptation framework based on real-time assessments of Activity Concentration (AC), Normalized Target Signal (NTS), and bounded dose-volume histogram (bDVH%) metrics. Three offline strategies were developed: (1) preemptive adaptation for minor changes, (2) partial re-simulation for moderate

Biological Characteristics and Patterns of Codon Usage Evolution for the African Genotype Zika Virus.

We investigated temporal trends of codon usage changes for different host species to determine their importance in Zika virus (ZIKV) evolution. Viral spillover resulting from the potential of codon adaptation to host genome was also assessed for the African genotype ZIKV in comparison to the Asian genotype. To improve our understanding on its zoonotic maintenance, we evaluated in vitro the biological properties of the African genotype ZIKV in vertebrate and mosquito cell lines. Analyses were performed in comparison to Yellow fever virus (YFV). Despite significantly lower codon adaptation index

In vitro effect of fucose-specific lectins on rat erythrocyte membranes under normal conditions and during toxic stress.

We studied the effect of various fucose-specific lectins on lipid peroxidation in rat erythrocyte membranes under normal conditions and during exposure to the toxic agent. Under normal conditions parameters of lipid peroxidation in erythrocyte membranes increased after treatment with lectins or cadmium nitrate. Lectins possess biological activity modulated lipid peroxidation in membranes of erythrocytes from experimental animals, which depended on the time of adaptation. Differences were revealed in the effect of bacterial and plant lectins on lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes treated with th

Rapid and exceptionally small-scale adaptation of the alpine plant Cardamine resedifolia to mining-contaminated soils in multi-stress condition.

The mechanisms by which plants tolerate soil contamination have been studied in details in controlled laboratory conditions, but they still remain largely unexplored in natural conditions where mixtures of contaminants are present in soils and their effects might interact with other environmental variables. This is especially true in high-altitude alpine environments, where abiotic stress is naturally heightened, but which so far have received little attention in environmental pollution studies. As we were interested in the tolerance mechanisms at play on very fine spatiotemporal scales for al

A mathematical model of adaptive behavior in quadruped locomotion.

Locomotion involves repetitive movements and is often executed unconsciously and automatically. In order to achieve smooth locomotion, the coordination of the rhythms of all physical parts is important. Neurophysiological studies have related that basic rhythms are produced in the spinal network called, the central pattern generator (CPG), where some neural oscillators interact to self-organize coordinated rhythms. We present a model of the adaptation of locomotion patterns to a variable environment, and attempt to elucidate how the dynamics of locomotion pattern generation are adjusted by the

Rethinking control strategies for plant-parasitic nematodes.

To improve management for plant-parasitic nematodes, new solutions must reflect biological realities and be guided by coherent, science-based regulations. This study addresses five areas: (1) regulatory and market hurdles that slow adaptation of biological control products despite strong safety records and scalable production; (2) microbiome-mediated soil resilience, including nematode-microbiome interactions, suppressive consortia, validated delivery systems, and diagnostics to shift soils toward durable suppression; (3) effective containment for nematodes of regulatory concern, and precise r

Mutations in HIV-1 envelope that enhance entry with the macaque CD4 receptor alter antibody recognition by disrupting quaternary interactions within the trimer.

UNLABELLED: Chimeric simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (SHIV) infection of macaques is commonly used to model HIV type 1 (HIV-1) transmission and pathogenesis in humans. Despite the fact that SHIVs encode SIV antagonists of the known macaque host restriction factors, these viruses require additional adaptation for replication in macaques to establish a persistent infection. Additional adaptation may be required in part because macaque CD4 (mCD4) is a suboptimal receptor for most HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) variants. This requirement raises the possibi

[Adaptive training with electromyographic feedback after elimination of traumatic defects of wrist and fingers].

The objective of this work was to analyse the efficiency of adaptive training with electromyographic biological feedback in the early period after reconstruction of fingers depending on the character of wrist defects, the method of their correction, and etiology of the injury. Unique techniques were proposed for the training. Their effectiveness was evaluated based on clinical observations, results of electromyographic and biomechanical studies that demonstrated a significant increase of EMG amplitudes for different groups of wrist and forearm muscles during basic thumb movements (p = 0.05-0.0

Clinical Evaluation of Composite Restorations Using the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) Criteria: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study at University Dental Hospital, The University of Lahore, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Dental restorations play a very important role in maintaining oral function and aesthetics. However, the restoration's longevity is influenced by various factors, including material properties, classification of cavities, and clinical performance over time. Understanding why the restorations fail is essential not only for better treatment results but also for improving their longevity. The Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) criteria provide a detailed framework for assessing restoration performance in functional, biological, and aesthetic aspects. OBJECTIVE: This study aims

Inflammatory and Epigenetic Biomarkers in Prostate Disease: Current Evidence, Clinical Limitations, and Future Multimarker Strategies.

Prostate disease diagnostics increasingly integrate PSA-derived parameters, molecular assays, risk calculators, and multiparametric MRI, yet important limitations remain in distinguishing benign inflammatory changes from clinically significant prostate cancer and in capturing biological heterogeneity. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on inflammatory and epigenetic biomarkers in prostate disease, focusing on YKL-40, mannose-binding lectin, and global DNA methylation/hydroxymethylation. The reviewed evidence indicates that chronic inflammation, innate immune variability, tumor m

HSAF-DDI: Heterogeneous Semantic-Aware Drug-Drug Interaction Prediction with Hierarchical Adaptive Fusion.

Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) are modulated not only by structural relations between drugs but are also profoundly influenced by underlying biological mechanisms. Most existing methods fail to adequately consider biologically interpretable signals at multiple biological hierarchies, limiting their ability to model the mechanistic complexity of drug-drug interactions. In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous semantic-aware framework (HSAF-DDI) that integrates molecular motif, protein sequence, and knowledge graph representations for DDI prediction. This framework learns local functional semant

Multilevel analysis of integration and disparity in the mammalian skull.

Biological variation is often considered in a scalable hierarchy, e.g., within the individual, within the populations, above the species level. Morphological integration, the concept of covariation among constituent parts of an organism, is also hierarchical; the degree to which these "modules" covary is a matter of the scale of the study as well as underlying processes driving the covariation. Multilevel analyses of trait covariation are a valuable tool to infer the origins and historical persistence of morphological diversity. Here, we investigate concordance in patterns of integration and m
