Gene loss and compensatory evolution as a source of metabolic preadaptations.

Gene loss is common, yet whether it is merely an evolutionary dead-end or can promote future adaptation to new environments remains debated. Here, we systematically tested whether harmful loss of metabolic genes, followed by compensatory evolution, generates preadaptations to alternative nutrients in Escherichia coli. Our analysis revealed a striking outcome beyond simple growth restoration, where repair of a genetic defect yielded growth exceeding the unperturbed wild type on carbon sources not encountered during evolution. Such latent growth gains occurred across multiple deletion background

Delving into the innate and adaptive immunity of camelids: a paradigm of interspecies adaptation and evolutionary innovation.

Camelids have evolved to survive some of the most challenging climatic conditions on our planet and are resilient to physiological stress such as temperature extremes, drought, storms, intense ultraviolet radiation, dehydration, and starvation. They exhibit remarkable resistance to several diseases that severely affect other livestock including tetanus, foot-and-mouth disease, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The robust nature of the camelid immune system, which maintains functionality under extreme conditions, is remarkable. The special features of the camelid immune system include diffe

Insights into effortful adaptation during speech perception: The role of dopamine, norepinephrine, and prediction error.

In a highly variable world, listeners must be able to rapidly adjust to changing circumstances to prioritize comprehension. The neurobiological underpinnings of this ability are largely unspecified. This review combines insights from reinforcement learning, predictive coding, and the function of dopamine and norepinephrine to explore the viability of an effortful and error-driven system of adaptation during speech perception. Iteration, internal monitoring, error generation, and prediction are shared across multiple models of adaptation, leading to the possibility of a common mechanism. In sea

Living with vesico-vaginal fistula: experiences of women awaiting repairs in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

Vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) is one of maternal health problems confronting public health workers in Nigeria today. Information on how women suffering from this condition cope is important in that it can inform the design and delivery of programmes and interventions to address the challenges that face victims of VVF. The objective of this study was to highlight how women living with VVF cope with the health problem in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten women awaiting repairs at the National Fistula Centre at Abakaliki in Nigeria. Six of the women have lived with

Evolutionary Reorganization of Transcriptomic Architecture Across a UVB Tolerance Gradient in Fish.

Environmental stressors such as ultraviolet radiation impose strong selective pressures on organisms, yet how adaptation to such stressors shapes transcriptomic responses at the network level remains poorly understood. Although stratospheric ozone is recovering globally, substantial regional variation in UV exposure persists, particularly in high-altitude environments where extreme UV levels can occur. Here, we compared three fish models representing distinct biological responses to UVB exposure: wild-type zebrafish (Danio rerio), a melanin-deficient zebrafish mutant (nacre) lacking a major pr

The source of disparity vergence innervation determines prism adaptation.

A physiological model of prism adaptation argues that adaptation magnitude and rate are functions of the magnitude of reflex vergence innervation. It has also been shown that there is reduced prism adaptation magnitude for a given disparity stimulus where only peripheral sensory fusion is present (the 'eccentricity effect'). This study attempted to determine whether the eccentricity effect is attributable to reduced reflex vergence innervation in peripheral fusion. Experiments were run in a Maxwellian view haploscope. Convergence and divergence adaptation to 6 delta disparity stimuli were quan

Successful application of closed loop stimulation pacemakers with remote monitoring in 3 miniature donkeys with syncope.

Rate-adaptive single chamber pacemakers with accelerometer, closed loop stimulation (CLS), and remote monitoring functionality (Eluna 8 SR-T, Biotronik, SE & Co, Germany) were implanted in 3 miniature donkeys with third-degree atrioventricular block and syncope. After recovery, different pacemaker programming modes were tested at rest, during stress without physical exercise and during physical exercise. Pacing rates were compared to actual atrial rates and showed that CLS functionality allowed physiological heart rate adaptation. A transmitter installed in the stable provided wireless connect

Cerebellar iTBS enhances gait adaptation by modulating cortical sensorimotor network dynamics: a randomized controlled trial.

Gait adaptation enables individuals to maintain locomotor stability under persistent perturbations. Although the cerebellum is critical for sensory prediction error-based (SPE) adaptation, how cerebellar neuromodulation reshapes cortical sensorimotor networks to enhance gait adaptation remains unclear. This study investigated the behavioral effects and underlying cortical neurodynamic mechanisms of cerebellar intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) on gait adaptation. Thirty-two healthy adults received either active or sham cerebellar iTBS. Participants performed a split-belt treadmill ada

Adaptation problems with nursing home application for elderly persons: an application of the Roy adaptation nursing model.

This study sought to identify adaptation problems on the part of elderly persons and significant others that were associated with nursing home applications for elderly persons. Within the framework of the Roy Adaptation Nursing Model, an ex post facto research design was utilized to identify these adaptation problems. The four adaptive modes in this model are: physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. The study group (n = 22) and a control group of elderly persons living in Calgary, as well as their significant others, were administered a structured questionnaire. Five h

Time-dependent computational model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis to estimate how mechanoinflammatory mechanisms impact cartilage aggrecan content.

Degenerative musculoskeletal diseases like osteoarthritis can be initiated by joint injury. Injurious overloading-induced mechanical straining of articular cartilage and subsequent biological responses may trigger cartilage degradation. One early sign of degradation is loss of aggrecan content which is potentially accelerated near chondral lesions under physiological loading. Yet, the mechanoinflammatory mechanisms explaining time-dependent degradation in regions with disparate mechanical loading are unclear and challenging to assess with experiments alone. Here, we developed computational mod

Complexities of gene expression patterns in natural populations of an extremophile fish (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliidae).

Variation in gene expression can provide insights into organismal responses to environmental stress and physiological mechanisms mediating adaptation to habitats with contrasting environmental conditions. We performed an RNA-sequencing experiment to quantify gene expression patterns in fish adapted to habitats with different combinations of environmental stressors, including the presence of toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) and the absence of light in caves. We specifically asked how gene expression varies among populations living in different habitats, whether population differences were consist

Evaluation of adaptation to visually induced motion sickness based on the maximum cross-correlation between pulse transmission time and heart rate.

BACKGROUND: Computer graphics and virtual reality techniques are useful to develop automatic and effective rehabilitation systems. However, a kind of virtual environment including unstable visual images presented to wide field screen or a head mounted display tends to induce motion sickness. The motion sickness induced in using a rehabilitation system not only inhibits effective training but also may harm patients' health. There are few studies that have objectively evaluated the effects of the repetitive exposures to these stimuli on humans. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ada

Cold Stress Activates the Expression of Genes of the Chloroplast Transcription Apparatus in Arabidopsis thaliana Plants.

The physiological and molecular responses of Arabidopsis thaliana plants to cold stress were studied. Exposure to a low non-freezing temperature (4°C, 5 days) caused a decrease in the physiological functions and activity of a number of photosynthetic genes and elevation in expression of the cold stress gene COR15a, the product of which protects chloroplasts. It was shown for the first time that in parallel to a general inhibition of physiological functions under hypothermia, an increase in the expression of most genes for the chloroplast transcription apparatus was observed. This is obviously

The regulatory role of phytohormones in plant drought tolerance.

This paper highlights the role of various signaling hormones in drought stress tolerance. It explains how phytohormones act and interact under drought conditions. Drought stress significantly impairs plant growth, development and productivity. The likelihood of adverse impacts of drought will increase due to variations in global climate patterns. Phytohormones serve as key regulators of drought tolerance mechanisms in plants. The in-depth understanding of the role and signaling of such hormones is thus of great significance for plant stress management. In this review, we conducted a bibliometr

Stress-Induced Metabolic Reprogramming in the Green Microalga Chlorella sp. SLA-04.

Microalgae thrive in diverse and often challenging environments by coordinating metabolic and physiological responses to environmental stress, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations remain incompletely understood. Here, we combined physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic analyses to investigate the response of the green microalga Chlorella sp. SLA-04 to nitrogen depletion and high-alkalinity growth. Nitrogen depletion redirected carbon toward carbohydrate and lipid storage and was accompanied by coordinated transcriptional changes that suppressed photosynthesis while

RNA Sequencing of Whole Blood Defines the Signature of High Intensity Exercise at Altitude in Elite Speed Skaters.

Although high altitude training has been increasingly popular among endurance athletes, the molecular and cellular bases of this adaptation remain poorly understood. We aimed to define the underlying physiological changes and screen for potential biomarkers of adaptation using transcriptional profiling of whole blood. Seven elite female speed skaters were profiled on the 18th day of high-altitude adaptation. Whole blood RNA-seq before and after an intense 1 h skating bout was used to measure gene expression changes associated with exercise. In order to identify the genes specifically regulated

Computational modelling of cardiac control following myocardial infarction using an in silico patient cohort.

Loss of cardiac physiological function following myocardial infarction (MI) is accompanied by neural adaptations in the baroreflex that are compensatory in the short term, but then become associated with long-term disease progression. One marker of these adaptations is decreased baroreflex sensitivity, a strong predictor of post-MI mortality. The relative contributions of cardiac remodelling and neural adaptation in the sensory, central brainstem and peripheral ganglionic loci to baroreflex sensitivity changes remain underexplored. We used a computational model-based approach that accounts for

Automatic, But Not Autonomous: Implicit Adaptation Is Modulated by Goal-Directed Attentional Demands.

Implicit adaptation recalibrates movements based on sensory prediction errors. It is often characterized as automatic and resource-independent, suggesting that it is insulated from cognitive influence. Here, we asked whether implicit adaptation is sensitive to goal-directed attentional demands imposed by a concurrent visual task. Across two experiments, we used clamped visual feedback to measure implicit adaptation while human adults (49 females, 23 males) monitored a rapidly changing visual stream for targets. In Experiment 1, participants performing the visual task showed modest early enhanc
