Stress and distress.

I must ask the reader's indulgence for this article's concern with applications of the stress concept, which are distinct from, although related to clinical medicine. It has not been my object to deal with the way physicians have been aided by stress research in the practice of medicine--that information is already widely available. Rather, I have attempted to sketch briefly the history of the stress theory and to demonstrate how this information can help anyone, physician or layman, lead a more complete and satisfying life. The applications of the stress theory have been dealt with at length

Adaptive coping under conditions of extreme stress: Multilevel influences on the determinants of resilience in maltreated children.

The study of resilience in maltreated children reveals the possibility of coping processes and resources on multiple levels of analysis as children strive to adapt under conditions of severe stress. In a maltreating context, aspects of self-organization, including self-esteem, self-reliance, emotion regulation, and adaptable yet reserved personalities, appear particularly important for more competent coping. Moreover, individual differences in biological processes ranging from gene by environment interactions to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to brain organization related to emotion a

What Is Known About Maladaptive Daydreaming? A Scoping Review.

Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is a dysfunctional coping mechanism that involves excessive, uncontrollable daydreaming. MD accounts for severe impairment in life functioning and is comorbid with several psychopathological disorders, sharing common maladaptive features such as compulsion and emotional dysregulation. We conducted a scoping review of the research on MD. We aimed to clarify the definition of MD, its underlying psychological mechanisms, and characteristics of the published research. We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, Web of Science Core Collection, and secondary sources for MD-fo

"I am in a Fight with My Brain": A Qualitative Study on Cancer-Related Ruminations of Individuals with Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the cancer-related ruminations from the subjective perspectives of individuals with cancer. DATA SOURCES: The study adopted a qualitative design, and participants (N = 16) were individuals with cancer. The analysis and interpretation of data were carried out according to the phenomenological-hermeneutical method. CONCLUSION: The following four themes emerged as a result of the analysis of qualitative data revealing the experiences of individuals with cancer: (1) attributed meanings to cancer-related ruminations, (2) perceived ruminations toward an unc

Evaluating strategies to manage and endure challenging behaviors in mucopolysaccharidoses.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare, genetic, lysosomal storage disorders characterized by progressive, multisystemic accumulation of glycosaminoglycans. Individuals with severe MPS often present with significant neurological involvement and may exhibit challenging behaviors, including hyperactivity, aggression, and sleep disturbance. These behaviors can cause adverse outcomes and necessitate the development of specific measures to support affected families. Through an analysis of the results reported by Hoffmann et al. in their recent study, this letter outlines important fact

Plasticity, stereotypy, intra-individual variability and personality: handle with care.

Only recently, variability within individuals has become of importance to evolutionary thinking. The boom in the literature on behavioural variability has led to the emergence of concepts such as behavioural plasticity, stereotypy, imprecision, and intra-individual variability (IIV). The proliferation of new terms has resulted in overlapping concepts, spreading confusion in understanding the origins of variability. Here we provide a critical overview of the concepts related to behavioural variability within the individual. We conclude that although there is no overlapping between behavioural p

Four lessons in adaptive leadership.

The armed services have been in the business of leadership development much longer than the corporate world has. Today's military leaders need tools and techniques to face a fast-changing and unpredictable type of enemy--so the armed services train their officers in ways that build a culture of readiness and commitment. Business leaders need to foster an adaptive culture to survive and succeed, given that they, too, face unprecedented uncertainty--and new types of competitors. Michael Useem and his colleagues at the Wharton School incorporate exposure to military leadership into MBA and execut

The psychological aspects of vitiligo.

Dermatologists are likely to be confronted with patients who present with a wide range of psychiatric issues and problems. Writers on psychocutaneous medicine have described a variety of conditions that represent the interplay between the psyche and the soma. Vitiligo is one such disease and will be the focus of this article. Specifically, 3 areas will be examined: (1) the psychological impact vitiligo has on patients, (2) how psychological factors contribute to the etiology and course of the illness, and (3) the benefits of offering adjunctive psychological treatment. By exploring these aspec

Sustaining educational and psychological support during protracted war: a regional laboratory model from Ukraine.

Protracted wars create challenges that extend beyond immediate educational disruption and humanitarian response. As crisis conditions become embedded within everyday life, educational communities must continuously adapt to emerging psychological, social, and educational needs affecting children, families, teachers, and schools. While existing research in Education in Emergencies (EiE) and school-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) has substantially expanded the understanding of child wellbeing and intervention strategies during crises, considerably less attention has been devo

From parental psychological control to hidden emotional pressure: a multimodal review of children's socio-emotional development.

Multimodal data processing is becoming increasingly important in neuroscience and perception science because children's emotional and social experiences are rarely expressed through a single observable channel. In parent-child interaction, children may verbally comply with parental expectations while simultaneously showing subtle affective, behavioral, physiological, or neural signs of internal distress. This review examines parental psychological control as a hidden but developmentally significant context for multimodal assessment. Unlike behavioral control, which regulates children's externa

Human adaptative behavior to Antarctic conditions: A review of physiological aspects.

The Antarctic environment induces adaptive metabolic and neuroendocrine changes associated with survival, as well as increased risks to physical and mental health. Circadian disruption has been observed in Antarctic expeditioners. The main consequences appear in quality of sleep, which can affect physical and cognitive performance. Physiological adaptation to cold is mediated by the norepinephrine and thyroid hormones (T3 and 3,5-T2 metabolite). The observed changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis of expeditioners varied according to temperature, photoperiod, time spent in the

Living with vesico-vaginal fistula: experiences of women awaiting repairs in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

Vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) is one of maternal health problems confronting public health workers in Nigeria today. Information on how women suffering from this condition cope is important in that it can inform the design and delivery of programmes and interventions to address the challenges that face victims of VVF. The objective of this study was to highlight how women living with VVF cope with the health problem in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten women awaiting repairs at the National Fistula Centre at Abakaliki in Nigeria. Six of the women have lived with
