A case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea is presented. A 30-year-old non-smoking woman with strong inspiratory dyspnea at rest was admitted to the Dept. of Pulmonary Diseases. At auscultation a respiratory murmur was more silent at right lung and stridor over trachea was heard. CT scan revealed tumor at the bifurcation of the trachea. Bronchoscopy was made and biopsy established the diagnosis: adenoid cystic carcinoma. The tumor was partially removed with rigid bronchoscope and radiotherapy was started. Clinical improvement occurred; in control CT scan tumor vanished. The trachea cance

Waldeyer's ring is most prominent during childhood, when the size of the oro-nasopharyngeal space is not yet fully developed, but decreases spontaneously with age. In the child, enlarged tonsils and/or adenoids may cause Eustachian tube dysfunction/otitis media, rhinosinusitis, obstructive sleep apnea, voice changes, change in facial growth, swallowing problems and can affect overall quality of life. Consequently, tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy are among the most common surgical procedures in children. The size of the oro- and nasopharynx has been investigated in normal children with and w…

The local immune response in adenoid and tonsil tissue can be visualized and the complexity of the cytokine network and effector molecule expression has not been illustrated in several different tonsillar entities. Many factors still remain to be learned in order to help us to understand the interactions between microorganisms and host in peripheral lymphatic tissue.

Adenoid cystic carcinomas are malignant epithelial tumors that originate in body regions containing exocrine and eccrine glands. Their most common location is the salivary glands. These tumors have specific, highly individualized histopathological and clinical features. Three cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma in different sites, palate, sublingual gland, and nasal cavity, are reported. The literature is reviewed for information about the fundamental clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of these tumors.

Until recently, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) has been considered to be a borderline disease between benign and malignant because of its low level of malignancy, slow growth and scarce aggressivity. ACC is now a histologically well defined tumor and is currently classified as malignant; it has a prolonged natural history, is infiltrative, and tends to recur locally and give rise to local-regional metastases or, more rarely, remote metastases. Its incidence in the lower airways is low (0.1% of all broncho-pulmonary neoplasms). Eight patients (6 women and 2 men) have undergone surgery for ACC s

We studied the outcomes of 76 children, aged 3 to 12 years, with large tonsils and/or large adenoids who underwent surgery to relieve upper airway obstruction over a 1-year period. Following surgery, nearly all patients experienced an alleviation of all symptoms, except for enuresis. We suggest that children who have large tonsils and/or adenoids will gain substantial benefit if they are removed, even children who do not have a history of severe sleep apnea or objective evidence from polysomnography.

We present a case of oro-pharyngeal burn which occurred during electrodissection of the adenoid and tonsil in a 5-year-old boy. We intubated the patient with an uncuffed spiral tube of appropriate size and noticed a slight gas leak during positive-pressure ventilation. Anesthesia was maintained with a mixture of 60% nitrous oxide, 40% oxygen and 2.5% sevoflurane. During manipulations of the right tonsil, orange-colored flame blew out about 5 cm from the mouth. Fortunately, the patient underwent the operative procedures without any further troubles, recovered fully from the grade 1 burn in the

In a previous study of adenoid tissue from allergic and non-allergic patients, we concluded that in allergic children edema of the "chorium" was present in 80.4% and that treatment with antihistamine drugs may reduce this edema. The purpose of the present study was to compare the histopathology of the palatine tonsil and adenoid from allergic patients. Tissue samples were obtained from 153 patients (56 tonsils and 97 adenoids from allergic children). We analysed the intensity of the edema and its cellular components in the chorium of palatine tonsils and adenoids. The frequently seen edema in …

Adenoid cystic carcinoma initially diagnosed and treated as hemangioma. A case diagnosed as having a hemangioma of the soft palate according to clinical and arteriographic findings is discussed. Recurrence appeared one year after embolization. Arteriography showed no vascular lesion and histopathologic study revealed an adenoid cystic carcinoma. It is stated that imaging studies may be insufficient.

Two cases of laryngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (1 supraglottic, 1 subglottic) are reported, particular attention being paid to diagnosis and treatment. The literature on this topic has been reviewed, in order to describe the natural course and the different treatments of this tumour. The authors underline the difficulty in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment, due to the insufficient follow-up in most published cases.

Eight cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma were reviewed to determine whether and how the histological features of the tumour vary with the progress of the disease. The tumours were classified by their histological patterns as tubular, cribriform, trabecular or solid. The relative amount of each pattern seen in routine light microscopic sections was calculated histomorphometrically and compared in the primary tumour and recurrent and/or metastatic lesions in the same case. In the early stage, the tubular pattern predominated. Later, the highest percentage shifted to the cribriform, then to the tr

Although adenoid cystic carcinoma may be found in multiple sites in the head and neck as well as other glandular sites throughout the body, nowhere is management of the disease more controversial than in the parotid gland. Here the facial nerve is at risk from both the disease and the treatment. Seventy-five cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid were analyzed. Patients were placed in four groups, depending on the type of parotid surgery received as definitive therapy: (1) lateral lobectomy, (2) total parotidectomy, (3) radical parotidectomy without preoperative facial weakness, and

A 50-year-old woman with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasal septum is presented. Her chief complaint was recurrent epistaxis. Surgery was originally performed to remove a nasal polyp, but during resection, the surgeon discovered that the mass had arisen from the nasal septum, so only a biopsy was done. The pathological report was adenoid cystic carcinoma, so she was referred and admitted to our hospital. A flat 1.5 x 1.5 cm tumor was recognized on the left side of the nasal septum. Nasal septectomy was performed. The tumor was dissected with nasal septal cartilage, and the defect was covere

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland is rarely reported in Japan compared with other countries in Europe and the U.S.A. Here is a report of this rare case. A 26-year-old female had complained of left visual disturbance and left exophthalmos with orbital pain. CT scan and MRI revealed a lacrimal gland tumor in that eye. The tumor was removed via a left frontal craniotomy, and diagnosed as adenoid cystic carcinoma. After operation, she was locally irradiated with a total dose of 5,000 rads using 15 MeV Lineac source. Chemotherapy was started with 5-FU after radiation therapy. An abnorm

We report a case of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the scalp in a 72-year-old man. It consisted of syringomalike papules scattered on an erythematous plaque that showed a loss of hair. Histologically, the papular lesion at first showed numerous tadpole-like tubular structures similar to those found in syringoma. Subsequent histologic studies over 2 years revealed the presence of numerous cribriform tumor masses penetrating into the subcutis, reaching the galea aponeurotica. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells showed no staining with either polyclonal (P) or monoclonal (M) antibodi

N-(6-aminohexyl)-1-naphthalenesulfonamide (W5), N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalenesulfonamide (W7) and Triflupromazine (TFPr) are substances with calmodulin antagonistic properties. All of these compounds inhibited the Con A-induced histamine release from human adenoidal mast cells. Maximal inhibition for W5 was observed at 200 microM, for W7 at 50 microM and for TFPr at 20 microM. Higher concentrations of each substance induced a marked histamine release. The kinetics of the mediator release were found to be different for Con A and W7 only after 5 mins incubation. The kinetics of TFPr we

To investigate the cellular differentiation of adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC), a comparative immunohistochemical study of 12 normal salivary glands and eight specimens of ACC was performed. Antibodies were used against S100 protein (S), keratins (K) of various molecular weights, vimentin (V), muscle-specific actin (A), epithelial-membrane antigen, human milk fat globules, and collagen type IV. A panel of four of these antibodies (SKVA) was identified as the most helpful in characterizing cells in normal salivary glands and ACC. The immunophenotypes depended on the histologic patterns of ACC.
