School Exclusion as a Partial Mediator Between Autism and Adolescent Mental Health.

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether school exclusion during secondary school mediates the association between Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and adolescent internalising and externalising mental health difficulties. METHODS: We analysed data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (N = 10,228, waves 1-7). Parents reported ASC diagnosis at ages 5-11 and whether their child had been excluded at ages 11-14. Internalising and externalising symptoms were self-reported by adolescents at age 17 on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Confounders were mapped onto a Directed Acyclic Graph.

Preparation for bias, racial-ethnic socialization competency, and Latinx adolescent mental health.

Although parental preparation for bias messages theoretically protect adolescents from the damaging impact of discrimination, they have been linked to mental health challenges in Latinx adolescents. Parental racial-ethnic socialization (RES) competency has been proposed to potentially explain this discrepancy. The present study examined whether RES competency (confidence, skill, stress) moderated the relation between parental preparation for bias and adolescent mental health symptoms (internalizing and externalizing) in Latinx families. Latinx parents (N = 210, Mage = 42.63, SD = 8.68, 56% fem

Long-Term Health Issues of Adolescent and Young Adult Breast Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis for adolescent and young adult (AYA) breast cancer patients has increased significantly. Research concerning long-term health problems is especially relevant given the long life expectancy of these young patients. This study aimed to compare the long-term health issues registered by general practitioners (GPs) of AYA breast cancer survivors to age-matched controls. METHODS: Data of all female AYAs diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 1999 and 2020 were obtained from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR) and linked with longitudinal data on health problems re

Effects of Cannabis Exposure on Adolescent Health and Development: A Narrative Review.

Adolescence is an immature but adventurous time period of exploration. Due to rapid developments of the brain with unbalanced release of neurotransmitters, adolescents are prone to impulsivity that may carry out potentially dangerous behaviors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of high school students have reported the use of cannabis or marijuana in 2019, and the trend has not declined since. Previous studies have shown that cannabis not only affects cognitive and social behaviors, but also produces psychological responses to stress. In this revi

Adolescent Mental Health in the Context of Discrimination: Examining Multiracial Racial Socialization.

There is limited research on racial socialization and its potential protective effect on youth mental health within Multiracial families. With a sample of Multiracial families (N = 209; 46% female youth), we investigated associations between adolescent experiences of racial discrimination (parent and youth reports at ages 14 and 16) and racial socialization (observational task at age 14) on depressive symptoms (youth report at age 16). Multiracial youth with more experiences of discrimination had more depressive symptoms. Multiracial youth who received more racial socialization in the form of

The Impact of Social Media & Technology on Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

The prevalence of mental health disorders among youth and adolescents has been rising at an alarming rate over the past few decades, with conditions such as anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperreactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and body dysmorphic disorder becoming increasingly common. One contributing factor that has received growing attention is the role of social media and technology in shaping adolescent brain development, behavior, and emotional well-being. While digital platforms provide opportunities for social connection, self-expression, and mental health support,

Beyond the curve: sexual and psychological health after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis treatment.

BACKGROUND: While the primary goal of treating Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is curve correction, long-term psychological and sexual outcomes are rarely examined. This systematic review evaluates whether bracing or surgical treatment affects sexual health, body image, and psychological well-being compared to healthy controls. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched up to November 2024 for studies assessing sexual and psychological outcomes in AIS patients treated with bracing or surgery. Inclusion crite

Adolescent Mental Health and Resilience Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess levels of depression, anxiety, and resilience factors before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in a school sample of adolescents. We also aimed to examine the compensatory and protective effects of individual, family, and school resilience factors on adolescent mental health. METHODS: We used fall 2019 and fall 2020 survey responses from a cluster randomized controlled trial implemented in 20 schools in a Midwestern county. The sample consisted of 3,085 responses from students in grades 5 and 6. Multilevel mixed-effects models with cluster robust standard errors wer

Examining the association between public health unit spending and adolescent substance use.

BACKGROUND: Based on the socio-ecological model of health, socioeconomic policy is an important determinant of population health. Spending decisions by public health units (PHU) have been shown to be associated with population health outcomes. Some studies have found greater PHU spending to be associated with improved population health, while others report mixed findings, warranting further research. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between per capita PHU spending and self-reported substance use among Canadian adolescents. METHODS: Cross-sectional, multilevel mod

Early marriage, education and mental health: experiences of adolescent girls in Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Early marriage and maternity represent a violation of human rights and a barrier to achieving gender equality in education. Studies conducted across various regions and countries, including Mozambique, have highlighted the negative consequences of early marriage and maternity, particularly on adolescent girls' physical, educational and mental health. Adolescent girls who marry before the age of 18 are more prone to a broad spectrum of mood, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders. In the districts of Maganja da Costa and Morrumbala in Zambézia Province, Mozambique

Impact of Social Determinants of Health on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Curve Severity.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health have been shown to influence the health and outcomes of pediatric patients. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) may be particularly sensitive to such factors as early diagnosis and treatment can obviate the need for surgical intervention. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect that social determinants of health have on the severity of AIS at presentation and at the time of surgery. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted for consecutive patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion for AIS from 2020 to 2022. Demographic data wa

India's response to adolescent mental health: a policy review and stakeholder analysis.

PURPOSE: Mental health problems and suicide are the leading cause of mortality in young people globally. India is home to the largest number of adolescents in the world. This study was undertaken to assess the policy environment for addressing adolescent mental health in India. Adolescent mental health and unemployment over the lifespan: Population evidence from Sweden.

RATIONALE: Symptoms of mental health problems have been shown to predict adverse labour market outcomes including unemployment, but no studies have used sibling models to examine the relationship between clinically diagnosed psychiatric conditions in adolescence and subsequent unemployment. OBJECTIVE: This study used extensive Swedish registry data to investigate the link between psychiatric conditions diagnosed during military conscription and unemployment over two decades. Further, we identified whether this relation was amplified during an economic downturn and tested whether it was affect
